CNN —Coldplay say they have surpassed their own target for cutting carbon emissions for live shows. Two years later, Coldplay announced its Music of the Spheres tour - and with it a pledge to halve emissions generated by show production, freight and the travel for band members and crew. Audiences have helped the band to slash their tour emissions with a host of measures, while still getting to see them play live. A tree has been planted for every ticket sold for the current tour. Among those who have taken measures to make their performances are more eco-friendly are Billie Eilish and Maroon 5.

Four days after presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump was convicted on 34 counts in his hush money trial in New York, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter will be called to answer for federal gun charges in Wilmington, Delaware. But a CBS/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that Americans believe 57% to 43% that the Manhattan jury reached the right verdict. His inflammatory remarks did not reflect the fact that his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and his demagoguery are far more reflective of developing-world banana republics than a fair jury trial. Hunter Biden is entitled to the same presumption of innocence and a trial by a jury of his peers that Trump was. “I’d rather be on President Biden’s side of that contrast than on the extreme MAGA Republican side,” he said.

In that initiative, federal agents and law enforcement officers used military techniques such as sweeps, raids and surveillance checkpoints — as well as a blunt form of racial profiling — to round up undocumented workers and load them onto buses and boats. As many as 1.3 million people were expelled, mostly Mexican and Mexican American workers, some of whom were U.S. citizens. Critical to the initiative — named Operation Wetback, for the racial slur — was intense anti-immigrant sentiment. Officials at the time used that sentiment to justify family separations and overcrowded and unsanitary detention conditions — practices that the Trump administration would deploy decades later in its own immigration enforcement. But recent polling shows that Mr. Trump’s position on immigration appears to be resonating.

According to the CCP's plan, by 2020, China was supposed to have "achieved iconic advances in AI models and methods, core devices, high-end equipment, and foundational software." Censorship requirements may slow China's AI development and limit the commercialization of domestic models, but they will not stop Beijing from benefiting from AI where it sees fit. We're not seeing a huge gap between the models Chinese companies have been able to roll out. The current price war is a race to the bottom, similar to what we've seen in the Chinese technology space before. A race to the bottom may simply beggar China's AI ecosystem.

CNN —Women who closely followed a Mediterranean diet lived much longer than those who did not, according to a new study that followed more than 25,000 women for 25 years. “In this study, adherence to the Mediterranean diet was a proxy for diet quality. Each increase in the adherence to the Mediterranean diet extended life for women, the new study found. In all that data, however, are few details on the specific ways the Mediterranean diet may affect women, especially long-term. “What might be worth noting is that the adherence measure ‘corrects’ for distortions of the Mediterranean diet,” Katz said.

FCC ends affordable internet program due to lack of funds

Washington CNN —The Affordable Connectivity Program, which helped low-income Americans get online, is no more. The program’s lapse threatens to throw nearly 60 million Americans into financial distress, CNN has reported. The program officially ends on June 1, said the Federal Communications Commission, which administered the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) to approximately 1 in 5 households across the country and on tribal reservations. “The Affordable Connectivity Program filled an important gap that provider low-income programs, state and local affordability programs, and the Lifeline program cannot fully address,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in a statement, referring to the name of another, similar FCC program that subsidizes wireless and home internet service. He also announced a series of voluntary commitments by a handful of internet providers to offer — or continue offering — their own proprietary low-income internet plans.

Dow member Salesforce dropped about 19% during the week, which made it the most oversold stock in the market. With this in mind, CNBC Pro screened for the most overbought and oversold stocks on Wall Street as measured by their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. Stocks with a 14-day RSI below 30 are considered oversold, suggesting shares may be due for a comeback. On the other hand, a 14-day RSI higher than 70 indicates a stock is overbought and may soon pull back. Biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb was the second-most oversold stock of the week.

What to Know About the Open Versus Closed Software Debate
  + stars: | 2024-05-29 | by ( Mike Isaac | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Few debates have raged longer and more contentiously in the computing industry than one: Is “open source” better than “closed” when it comes to software development? Source code makes up the underlying building blocks of the apps you use. Developers can write tens of thousands of lines of source code to create programs that will run on a computer. Open-source software is any such computer code that can be freely distributed, copied or altered to a developer’s own ends. The nonprofit Open Source Initiative, an industry organization, sets other stipulations and standards for what software is considered open source, but it is largely a matter of the code’s being free and open for anyone to use and improve.
