Burt Bacharach, legendary composer of pop songs, dies at 94

Bacharach was both an innovator and throwback, and his career seemed to run parallel to the rock era. He was an eight-time Grammy winner, a prize-winning Broadway composer for "Promises, Promises" and a three-time Oscar winner. Fellow songwriter Sammy Cahn liked to joke that the smiling, wavy-haired Bacharach was the first composer he ever knew who didn't look like a dentist. Bacharach was essentially a pop composer, but his songs became hits for country artists (Marty Robbins), rhythm and blues performers (Chuck Jackson), soul (Franklin, Luther Vandross) and synth-pop (Naked Eyes). He's everybody's composer ... Burt Bacharach!"

Jen Glantz recently read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. The book provides 30 different principles around how to make people like you more, influence their way of thinking, and be a better leader. After finishing the book, I spent two months implementing a few of the main points in my personal life and business interactions. Rather than provide feedback or even share my own journey as an entrepreneur, I listened and responded with follow-up questions. As a solopreneur who didn't get a business degree or go to business school, I'm constantly having to find ways to grow my skills and expand my knowledge.
Angela Champ is an HR executive. At one former company, Champ said, the layoffs were scheduled in 15-minute increments over the day. The downsizing described in the essay below took place at a company where Champ was previously employed. We had simultaneous terminations going on, and each HR business partner was assigned one or two people. Another HR person would go and gather the person's belongings — their purse, their keys, their lunch bag — and bring them to the room.
A healthy diet, regular exercise, and an active social life can keep your memory stronger. Those who had more "healthy lifestyle factors" had slower memory decline than those who did not. Researchers looked at six factors: a healthy diet, regular exercise, regular social contact, cognitive activities, and abstaining from both smoking and alcohol. This suggests that despite having a higher risk for memory loss, a healthy lifestyle can have a positive effect on slowing memory decline, the authors of the report said. They added that there needs to be further research on the link between healthy habits and the slowing of memory loss.
Former Memphis officer Demetrius Haley came under fire two years before beating Tyre Nichols. In Feb. 2021, Haley was on the scene when another officer ripped a woman from her car. Despite seeing the officer dislocating the woman's shoulder, he didn't write a use of force report. In addition to the use of force incident, Haley's disciplinary records include a traffic violation in which he struck a stop sign with his cruiser. "She stated the department needs several more officers like Haley," the January 2021 hearing report says.
One of the cases involves two student-loan borrowers who sued because they didn't qualify for the full $20,000 amount of relief. "Extra breathing room for millions of Americans is on hold because of lawsuits brought by opponents of this Administration's student debt relief plan," the White House wrote on Twitter this week. Here are some standouts from the Job Creators Network's argument on why Biden's student-loan forgiveness should be blocked. The debt-relief plan demonstrates "gross over-inclusiveness"Leading up to the announcement of Biden's debt relief, many advocates and Democratic lawmakers were urging him to make the relief as expansive as possible, without any thresholds. "There was a national emergency that impacted millions of student borrowers," the official said.
Alexandra Fasulo is a freelance writer who made made $271,000 in revenue on Fiverr in 2021 by 'drop-servicing' her work. They aren't necessarily going to know the lingo, the general workflow process, or how to properly work with freelancers. In order to support its current freelancers, Fiverr should consider reevaluating their flat 20% fee applied to all orders completed on the site. But it's possible a recession could shift Fiverr out of the top spot if they continue to apply unfair fees. With more readily available digital tools and software that can automate a big chunk of any freelancing business, freelancers are poised to emerge from the recession at the top of the global economy.
Stack ranking is when managers score employees' performances relative to that of their coworkers. It's not easy to fight it if your company uses stack rankings, but you can take a few actions. Forced, or stack, ranking — a system in which managers score their employees' individual performances relative to that of their coworkers — needs to die but, alas, refuses to do so. Stack ranking is still used today, including at companies like Amazon, though it's largely been found to be a terrible management practice. Why, then, do some companies persist in stack ranking?
An ex-Wagner mercenary said the group's leaders shot soldiers who did not want to fight in Ukraine. "They brought two prisoners who refused to go fight and they shot them in front of everyone," he told CNN. "They would round up those who did not want to fight and shoot them in front of newcomers," Andrei Medvedev told CNN's Anderson Cooper while discussing the "ruthless" tactics. Medvedev told CNN he evaded arrest "at least ten times" during his defection journey and that he had to dodge bullets from Russian forces. The Wagner Group, a notorious Russian paramilitary organization with close links to the Kremlin, has appeared to be the main fighting force in Russia's war in Ukraine.

Google felt like a safe and stable environment, where the risk of being laid off was very low, Neil said.
Shahab Mahboubian performs 30 to 40 cosmetic limb-lengthening surgeries a year. The only field in medicine that uses all of these tools is orthopedic surgery, so it seemed like the right fit. I specialized in limb-lengthening surgery specifically because I wanted to do something that was different from everybody else. People that undergo limb-lengthening surgery are from all walks of life, and many used COVID lockdowns to recover post-surgery. I would say 80% to 85% of my cosmetic limb-lengthening patients are men, and 15% to 20% are women.

The infusions at the ketamine clinic in his West Texas hometown were a Christmas gift from his grandmother. About five years ago, more and more of my friends started using ketamine recreationally. IV ketamine treatment centers charging $400 to $2,000 an infusion popped up all over the country. "Ketamine used as directed in an appropriate clinical setting very rarely leads to any dependence," Mindbloom says on its website. Like Nadia, most of the people I interviewed said when they started using ketamine, they didn't think it was possible to become dependent on it.

Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp and co-chairman of 21st Century Fox, arrives at the Sun Valley Resort of the annual Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference, July 10, 2018 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Rupert Murdoch has withdrawn the proposal to re-combine Fox Corp and News Corp .Fox said Tuesday its board received a letter from Murdoch, its chairman, and his son Lachlan Murdoch that "determined that a combination is not optimal for the shareholders" of either of the companies at the time. The potential merger had faced opposition from shareholders in recent months, who didn't believe a merger would show the true value of News Corp. if it merged with Fox. A combination of the two companies would have unified leadership in Murdoch's empire and cut costs. News Corp. owns Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones.

He had the files laid out on a conference-room table when the board met with Cohn in Elliott's New York office.
