Our species, Homo sapiens — with our complex thoughts and deep emotions — were the only true humans to ever walk the Earth. A study last week found early humans were building structures with wood before H. sapiens evolved. This ability to read ancient DNA revolutionized the field, and it is constantly improving. He specializes in creating lifelike models of ancient humans for museums, including the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History, in hopes of helping public perception catch up to the science. They haven't been able to gather much ancient DNA from Africa, where H. sapiens first evolved, because it has been degraded by heat and moisture.

A space capsule carrying NASA’s first asteroid samples streaked toward a touchdown in the Utah desert Sunday to cap a seven-year journey. Flying by Earth, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft released the capsule from 63,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) out. About a teaspoon was returned by Japan, the only other country to bring back asteroid samples. By the time it returned Sunday, the spacecraft had traveled 4 billion miles (6.2 billion kilometers). NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials on Friday recommended RSV vaccinations for moms-to-be, a second new option to protect newborns from serious lung infections. The shots should be given late in pregnancy but only during RSV season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The RSV vaccine, made by Pfizer, should only be given between 32 weeks and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Some CDC panel members who ultimately supported the recommendation expressed reservations. Several also balked at the $295-a-dose price Pfizer has been charging for the same RSV vaccine for seniors, called Abrysvo.

Two days later, the man was cracking jokes and able to sit in a chair, Maryland doctors said Friday. “You know, I just keep shaking my head – how am I talking to someone who has a pig heart?” Dr. Bartley Griffith, who performed the transplant, told The Associated Press. “It’s just an amazing feeling to see this pig heart work in a human,” said Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, the Maryland team’s xenotransplantation expert. That FDA allowed this second case “suggests that the agency is not ready to permit a pig heart clinical trial to start,” Mashke added. The pig heart, provided by Blacksburg, Virginia-based Revivicor, has 10 genetic modifications – knocking out some pig genes and adding some human ones to make it more acceptable to the human immune system.

Get ready for higher energy costs, JPMorgan said Friday, warning that the latest surge in oil prices may have a lot further to run. The recent uptick in oil prices , sparked by output cuts from OPEC and higher demand, has fueled inflationary fears and heightened concern that interest rates may stay at today's lofty levels for longer. Consumer prices in August, for example, showed a 0.6% month-over-month increase, the largest monthly gain of the year, partly owing to uptick in energy prices. Brent prices rose another 1% Friday to trade around $94 a barrel as a fuel export ban from Russia reignited global supply fears. Amid this looming energy "supercycle," JPMorgan sees a positive outlook for global energy producers and named Shell , Baker Hughes and Exxon Mobil among its best ideas.

Some believe a tight oil market and resilient U.S. growth will keep energy stocks rising for the rest of 2023. Bullish investors argue that energy stocks are still cheap by historical standards - and far less richly valued than other areas of the market. The energy sector currently trades at a forward price to earnings ratio of 12.2, well below its historical median forward P/E of 15.3, according to LSEG Datastream. Parts of the market appear skeptical energy stocks have much further to run. "That should result in a ... smoother ride for energy stocks than we’ve been accustomed to."

And senior U.S. administration officials who previewed the meeting said the two nations are rolling out a partnership on workers' rights. Lula quickly traveled to Washington, where he and Biden bonded over the challenges to democracy they had both overcome. Labor is an issue dear to Lula, who got his start in politics as leader of a powerful metalworkers' union. They noted that the Biden administration has lifted travel restrictions to Cuba imposed by the prior administration and is also in the process of restarting remittances to that country. He declined to say whether Biden would broach the subject of Venezuela in their bilateral meeting.

NEW YORK (AP) — Researchers have uncovered a simple structure from the Stone Age that may be the oldest evidence yet of early humans building with wood. But it is much more complex than I thought.”Barham and his team dug up the log structure — plus a handful of wooden tools — from a riverbed site that sits above a waterfall in Zambia. They think the crossed logs could have been the base for a bigger structure like a walkway or a platform. The log structure was made at least 476,000 years ago, while the wood tools are slightly younger, under 400,000 years old. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

U.S. oil output is expected to fall to 9.393 million barrels per day (bpd) in October from 9.433 million bpd in September, EIA data showed. A record 9.476 million bpd was hit in July. That's because U.S. exploration and production firms were still more focused on returning money to investors and paying down debt than just boosting oil and gas production. U.S. oil and gas production, however, is on track to reach record highs in 2023 and 2024 due in part to rising oil pries. Total gas output in the big shale basins will slip by 0.3 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) to 98.4 bcfd in October from 98.7 bcfd in September, EIA projected.

Fewer than half of rural hospitals now have maternity units, prompting government officials and families to scramble for answers. The closures have worsened so-called “maternity care deserts" — counties with no hospitals or birth centers that offer obstetric care and no OB providers. Ultimately, doctors and researchers say, having fewer hospital maternity units makes having babies less safe. “It feels like you’re held in a way.”Some states and communities are taking steps to create more freestanding birth centers. It was a novel and “innovative” idea to request federal nurses to boost staffing at a rural maternity unit, Wyden’s office said.
