Why Bolivia is Latin America’s next dining destination

Capital city La Paz boasts three eateries — Gustu, Ancestral and Phayawi — currently ranked among the top 100 restaurants in Latin America. Bolivia’s food revolution has also spread to major cities such as Sucre as well as the Uyuni Salt Flats. Rather than fine dining, the ambience is decidedly casual, the tables spread across three floors of an old wooden townhouse in the boho Sopocachi neighborhood of central La Paz. That’s not too surprising coming from Nicholls, whose 2009 novel “One Day” explored many of the same themes. It was the most enjoyable writing experience I’ve had for a long time. While hiking the coast-to-coast walk in England, author David Nicholls encountered some torrentially rainy days. I wanted the book to be partly about the comedy of miscommunication — the things we don’t say or the things we say and regret. You say you wanted the book to be in part about miscommunications and what ifs.

PARIS, France — There will be no magical run, no age- and injury-defying push into the deep end of the competition. AdvertisementThe end officially arrived at 6:28, with a final miss off the Spaniard’s racket, forced by Alexander Zverev, who prevailed 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. A clump of two dozen that is used to getting choice seats clogged the entryway to the president’s box. Ultimately, that is what doomed him on a chilly and dreary afternoon and evening under the roof on Chatrier. He hit serves that became easy chances for Zverev to go on the defensive, and groundstrokes into the middle of the court that Zverev pounded for winners.

Oil prices little changed as markets look to OPEC+ meeting

Oil prices were in a holding pattern in early Asian trading on Monday as markets awaited an OPEC+ meeting on June 2 where producers are expected to discuss maintaining voluntary output cuts for the rest of the year. Oil prices were in a holding pattern in early Asian trading on Monday as markets awaited an OPEC+ meeting on June 2 where producers are expected to discuss maintaining voluntary output cuts for the rest of the year. Combined with another 3.66 million bpd of production cuts valid through the end of the year, the output cuts are equivalent to nearly 6% of global oil demand. Markets will also be watching the U.S. personal consumption expenditures index this week for more signals about interest rate policy. The prospect of higher-for-longer interest rates has strengthened the U.S. dollar, making oil more expensive for holders of other currencies.

Burkina Faso extends military rule for five years
  + stars: | 2024-05-27 | by ( Martin Goillandeau | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
CNN —Burkina Faso’s military regime will extend its rule by five years under a new agreement reached during national consultations on Saturday, the talks’ chairman Colonel Moussa Diallo said on state television. A video of Traore signing the amended accord in front of a cheerful crowd was broadcast on Burkinabè state TV on Saturday. Most political party activities have been suspended in the country under the military rule. Burkina Faso, plagued by recurrent jihadist violence that has claimed thousands of lives for almost a decade, has seen two military coups in 2022. The first one in January brought Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba to power, before being himself overthrown in September of the same year by Captain Traoré.

But the company also has an underappreciated growth story as an attractive "pick-and-shovels" way to play the nuclear renaissance theme, Morgan Stanley analysts led by Kristine Liwag told clients in a research note Thursday. Curtiss-Wright builds a crucial reactor coolant pump for Westinghouse's third-generation AP1000 nuclear plants and there's growing interest in these builds in Europe in particular. Talk of a nuclear renaissance 15 years ago fizzled due to the political emphasis on renewables and competitively priced alternatives, the Morgan Stanley analysts said. Modernization of current nuclear plants in the U.S. is a $7 billion opportunity through 2050, according to Curtiss-Wright management. In a bull case, Curtiss-Wright could realize $4.9 billion in revenue through 2050 on AP1000 builds, Morgan Stanley estimates.

Fans streamed through the gates, packing Roland Garros, lining up for crepes and champagne and Aperol spritzes. If that latter court is his living room, then the grounds at Roland Garros are his estate. Ever since then, Zverev has wanted another shot at playing Nadal at Roland Garros — though not in the first round, more like a semifinal or a final. The idea of playing Nadal on this clay sends chills through the spines of so many players. In 2022, I remember he came into Roland Garros not winning Monte Carlo, not winning Madrid, not winning Rome.

Here’s why we eat popcorn at the movies

But the perfect (and very profitable) pairing of today wasn’t always the case: For many years, movie theaters wanted nothing to do with the snack. People watch movies in a newly reopened AMC River East theater on Aug. 20, 2020, in Chicago. Popular movies often bring collectible cups and popcorn buckets, or, in industry-speak, Collectible Concession Vehicles (CCVs). The cinema business will continue to evolve, but one thing will remain constant, said Gil of Queen’s University. “Theaters will stop playing movies before they will actually stop selling popcorn.”

Top commodity trader Pierre Andurand expects copper to reach $40,000 a ton in the next four years. AdvertisementCopper prices at records are only a taste of what's to come, says top commodities trader Pierre Andurand. Copper is already sitting near record highs, so any quadrupling from current levels would mean a prolonged series of fresh records. It's bad news for a depleting inventory; last year, global copper supply hit its lowest seasonal level since 2008. The supply-demand imbalance is the same thesis for why commodities expert Jeff Currie expects higher prices, though his projection is nowhere near Andurand's — Currie expects copper to hit $15,000 in the coming years, and has called it "the most compelling trade" he's ever seen.

Ukraine has begun releasing prisoners to serve in its army, part of a wider effort to rebuild a military that has been depleted by more than two years of war and is strained by relentless Russian assaults. It is unclear how many prisoners in total have been released since the law came into force a week ago. The Ukrainian authorities said this week that more than 3,000 prisoners had already applied. Russia’s program is open to prisoners convicted of violent crimes, while the Ukrainian law does not extend to people convicted of premeditated murder, rape or other serious offenses. The regional court said that most of the men released this week had been convicted of theft.

Oil prices were stable on Friday as investors considered the latest comments from the U.S. Federal Reserve on interest rates amid sticky inflation, while signs of firming seasonal U.S. fuel demand lent support. Brent crude futures rose 2 cents at $81.38 a barrel at 0315 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 1 cent at $76.86. Both benchmarks settled at multi-month lows on Thursday, with Brent crude futures closing at their weakest point since January and U.S. crude futures hitting a three-month low. Gasoline demand in the U.S. reached its highest level since November, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday. That helped support the market as U.S. drivers account for around a tenth of global oil demand, "making the upcoming driving season a pillar of the recovery in global demand growth", ANZ analysts said in a note.

Shares of Anglo American were up 0.35% shortly after the announcement, while BHP shares fell over 3.4%. The media line fed to the public about weeks of protests at Columbia — and the administrative crackdown that followed — has been selective at best. Columbia students have made clear that that’s what drives their protests. Why, even as numerous students at Columbia and elsewhere have been doxxed, harassed and bullied, were no congressional hearings called? But if Columbia students didn’t care about their university and the values it claims to uphold, they wouldn’t have risked so much with their protests. By the same token, if students didn’t care about our country, they wouldn’t protest so vocally against its policies.

They came from across the country to walk the halls of Congress and show lawmakers the human cost of the U.S. nuclear weapons program. They call themselves “downwinders” — a global community of people who lived near nuclear testing sites. In America, more than 100 nuclear devices were exploded in aboveground tests in New Mexico and Nevada between 1945 and 1962. The 1990 legislation has provided billions of dollars to people exposed to harmful radiation during U.S. nuclear tests or while mining uranium.
