REUTERS/David Gray/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Australia employment rebounded strongly in October, after a soft patch the previous month, though the jobless rate still ticked higher as more people went looking for work and rapid migration boosted the supply of labour. Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday showed net employment rose 55,000 in October from September, more than double market forecasts of 20,000. The jobless rate edged up to 3.7%, matching forecasts and largely due to a jump in the participation rate back to an all-time peak of 67%. Over the year to October, jobs growth of a healthy 2.8% was still not enough to match labour force growth of 3.8%.

REUTERS/Loren Elliott/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Australian wages posted the largest increase on record last quarter as a sharp rise in minimum wages benefited millions of workers, while intense competition among employers pushed up many individual pay deals. Annual pay growth picked up to 4.0%, from 3.6%, the fastest since early 2009 and just above market expectations of 3.9%. "Q3 was a perfect storm for wage pressures," said Sean Langcake, head of macroeconomic forecasting for Oxford Economics Australia. Much of the spike was due to a mandated 5.75% rise in the minimum wage which covers more than two million workers. Wage growth in the public sector accelerated to a 12-year high of 3.5%, while the private sector saw growth of 4.2% as firms fought to recruit and retain workers.

The day Congress went back to fourth grade

The 118th Congress, which took an initial step to punt funding deadlines to the winter, looked more like a fourth grade class on a day that will further erode trust in government ahead of next year’s elections. Across Capitol Hill in the world’s so-called greatest deliberative body, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin was spoiling for a prize fight. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, however, suggested that policing the Capitol was beyond even his wily capacity to enforce discipline within his conference. And only in the malfunctioning Congress would a speaker try to prevent one government shutdown by laying the possible path for two others. Israel and Ukraine have nothing to thank Congress forThe most glaring example of Congress’ failure to fulfill its duty on Tuesday came at a pro-Israel demonstration on the National Mall.

New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump is abandoning his effort to move the so-called hush money trial from New York state court to federal court. In a brief filing submitted to a New York-based appeals court, Trump said he was no longer appealing a lower-court ruling that rejected his bid to get the case transferred to federal court. Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal the reimbursement of hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. In July, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein denied Trump’s request to move the New York case to federal court, ruling that the payments to Daniels and alleged subsequent falsification of business records were not related to Trump’s presidential duties. Hush money paid to an adult film star is not related to a President’s official acts,” the judge wrote.

Conservatives also say Johnson, who was a rank-and-file member up until this point, hasn’t broken their trust yet. “Kevin was in a very difficult situation when that happened,” Johnson told CNN. But it wasn’t enough to win them over; the House Freedom Caucus took an official position against the plan. “Speaker Johnson must reassert his authority in this fight,” Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican, said ahead of the vote. “I think if you’re going to oust a speaker of the House from your conference, the red line should remain the same for the next speaker,” Greene said.

College prepared Pinky Cole well to be the CEO of a $100 million company, she says — just not in the way you might think. When I went to college, all the stuff that I learned, I don't remember [any] of it," Cole tells CNBC Make It. And while it's certainly possible to connect with high-powered people without a shared academic experience, college graduates tend to have better career prospects and financial outcomes than high school-only graduates. College graduates earned 75% more last year, on average, according to the San Francisco Fed, a research nonprofit. College graduates also reported a 2% unemployment rate last year, compared with 7% for their counterparts, the National Center for Education Statistics reported.

However, his aspirations to make UniCredit the "bank of Europe" are proving trickier to realise with the CEO setting a high bar for mergers and acquisitions in the euro zone's fractured capital markets, despite having what he describes as the biggest war chest among European lenders. UniCredit bought Greece's 9% stake in Alpha Bank (ACBr.AT) and struck a commercial partnership with the Athens-based lender, also acquiring most of its Romanian operations. The CEO works closely with a small M&A team he set up within UniCredit which constantly reviews potential deals in the markets and businesses where the bank operates, people with knowledge of the matter said. But uneven regulation across the euro zone, where progress towards a single banking market has stalled, complicates cross-border deals. Calling on Europe to follow his lead, Orcel says he has unlocked UniCredit's potential by giving it a unified strategy across its 13 markets.

[1/2] Newly elected Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) addresses the U.S. House of Representatives after he was elected to be the new Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., October 25, 2023. Johnson also warned Democrats that House Republicans would impose a full-year CR for 2024 "with appropriate adjustments to meet our national security priorities" if Congress fails to reach agreement. House Republicans are aiming for a Tuesday vote. Failure to hit that benchmark led to McCarthy's ouster, but some House Republicans suggested Johnson deserved more time. The brutal infighting that has characterized Republicans this year, including the party's own rejection of three seasoned nominees for House speaker, coincides with falling federal revenues and mounting costs for interest, health and pension outlays.

Holding down multiple jobs has long been a backbreaking way for low-wage workers to get by. They freeze their employment histories with Equifax and hibernate their LinkedIn profiles, so employers can't see they're holding multiple jobs. Those with multiple jobs also seek out positions they hope will be OE-friendly — light on meetings, as well as on the workload. There's another incentive: Unlike most Americans, those who work multiple jobs don't have to worry about layoffs. There's something radical that happens to a worker's psychology when they have multiple jobs.

LONDON, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Manchester City moved a point clear at the top of the Premier League on Sunday after a thrilling 4-4 draw at Chelsea with Erling Haaland scoring twice only for former City man Cole Palmer to level the match from the penalty spot in added time. It was the first time Chelsea had scored against Manchester City since they beat them in the 2021 Champions League final. It was the 21-year-old’s fourth Chelsea penalty in four attempts. "Very strange the first time I have played against City," Palmer told Sky Sports. The result moved City clear of Liverpool with 28 points from 12 games.

A worker is reflected in a wall of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) head office in central Sydney, Australia, March 1, 2016. Speaking at a UBS conference, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Assistant Governor Marion Kohler said inflation was still expected to decline but not expected to reach the top end of the RBA's 2%-3% target until the end of 2025. Consumer price inflation ran at 5.4% in the third quarter, down from a peak of 7.8% last year but above RBA expectations. As a result, the central bank revised up its forecasts for inflation and economic growth in its quarterly statement on policy released last week. Falling goods prices have led the slowdown in inflation, but domestically generated costs continued to rise, Kohler said.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s legal team has formally told a federal court that he would like his election subversion trial in Washington, DC, to be televised. Court rules do not allow for broadcasting of federal proceedings, and the Justice Department is opposed to allowing cameras. Several media outlets have asked the court to consider allowing cameras at the historic trial, set for March. “President Trump absolutely agrees, and in fact demands, that these proceedings should be fully televised,” his attorneys wrote in the filing late Friday night. Special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case, opposes televising the federal election subversion trial.

The White House sought to pin blame for the outlook change, which cited the high deficit and rising interest rates, on Republicans. "Moody's decision to change the U.S. outlook is yet another consequence of congressional Republican extremism and dysfunction," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said. House Republicans hope to vote on Tuesday on a stopgap measure, which could extend discretionary funding for federal agencies into mid-January. Representative Chip Roy, a prominent member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, said he could accept a stopgap measure that also contains aid to Israel in its war with Hamas. McCarthy opted for the bipartisan route after hardliners blocked a Republican stopgap measure with features intended to appease the party's far right.

Trump claims Jack Smith and his family ‘despise’ him

CNN —Former President Donald Trump continued his attacks on special counsel Jack Smith on Saturday, including a reference to Smith’s family, at a rally in Claremont, New Hampshire. Referring to the alleged ill -will Smith and his family have for Trump, the former president said Smith is “about at 10” and his family is “about a 15 on a scale of 10.”Some of Trump’s attacks against Smith stem from the activities of his wife, filmmaker Katy Chevigny. I just want to do what’s right for the country,” Trump told the crowd. Trump quickly appealed and sought to have the gag order paused while the appeal unfolded. A federal appeals court later temporarily froze the limited gag order, allowing him to again speak freely with criticism of possible witnesses in the case.

Earlier this week, it ended a four-month pause by raising its cash rate a quarter point to a 12-year high of 4.35%. Stubborn inflation in the service sector led the RBA to revise up its forecasts for both CPI and core inflation. "There is potential for further upside surprises to inflation," the RBA cautioned, pointing to domestic cost pressures and external factors such as global warming. Such surprises would risk de-anchoring inflation expectations and require even higher interest rates, the RBA said. Growth for end 2024 was lifted by a quarter point to 2.0%, while the forecast for late 2025 stayed at 2.25%.
