Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesBipartisan members of Senate leadership on Saturday committed to a vote on further funding for Ukraine aid "in the coming weeks." Bennet told reporters the bipartisan statement was exactly what he had hoped to see when he objected on the stopgap bill to keep the government open due to its lack of Ukraine funding. In a separate statement, Bennet addressed the need for Senate leadership to reaffirm support for Ukraine. Senate Leadership needed to reaffirm our bipartisan commitment to sustain funding for Ukraine. The Senate Leadership has released such a statement, and, as a result, I voted to keep the government open," he said in the statement.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Matt Gaetz said Sunday he will try to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a fellow Republican, from his leadership position this week after McCarthy relied on Democratic support to pass legislation that avoided a government shutdown. Gaetz, a longtime McCarthy nemesis, said on CNN's “State of the Union” that McCarthy was in “brazen, material breach” of agreements he made with House Republicans in January when he ran for speaker. As a result, Gaetz said he would be filing a “ motion to vacate the chair,” as House rules permit. Procedural votes could be offered to halt the motion or it could trigger a House floor vote on whether McCarthy, R-Calif., should remain speaker. “The only way Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the House at the end of this coming week is if Democrats bail him out,” Gaetz said.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., conducts a news conference in the U.S. Capitol on border security, government funding, and other issues, on Friday, September 29, 2023. Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on Sunday said he will aim to file a motion to force out House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week. McCarthy resorted to negotiating the deal with Democrats after struggling to rally the requisite votes from his fellow Republicans. That decision is already yielding political backlash from House Republicans like Gaetz who had threatened to oust him as speaker if he worked with the Democrats to get a deal done. Gaetz needs 218 votes in order for a motion to vacate McCarthy to pass.

Jensen said the Ocean Explorer could still re-float on a high tide, but failing that, the Knud Rasmussen would assist. While the idea of using the 14th Amendment to keep Trump out of the White House has been bandied about by lawyers and political figures, the Colorado action is the first lawsuit demanding that a state disqualify Trump from the ballot, CREW said. The group chose Colorado because the laws there make it easier to get it before a court, he says. Some members of Congress, most recently Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, have suggested the 14th Amendment might apply to Trump. Critics of the movement to disqualify Trump say the 14th Amendment clause was written to apply to former Confederates and should not be used against contemporary would-be candidates. Still, those who want to use the 14th Amendment to disqualify Trump face significant legal hurdles, experts say, adding that the matter is likely to end up in the Supreme Court if the movement gains steam.
