Market correction has more room to run, says Goldman Sachs

Tuesday's market rebound doesn't mean the market is yet in the clear — instead, investors should brace for more market volatility following Monday's global sell-off, according to Goldman Sachs chief global equity strategist Peter Oppenheimer. The S & P 500 rose 1.04% on Tuesday in a broad relief rally that lifted all 11 of its sectors. Nonetheless, the correction hasn't yet fully run its course, Oppenheimer told CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " on Tuesday. However, Oppenheimer doesn't necessarily think the correction is bad for the market. According to Strategas strategist Todd Sohn, Monday's spike in the volatility index could be a positive omen for equities in the medium term.

She was released last week as part of the prisoner swap between the US, Russia, and other countries. On Thursday, an FSB officer told us we were going to be freed as part of a prisoner swap — the miracle we had been waiting and hoping for. On the morning of the exchange, as we were being moved around, I didn't know the prisoner swap was happening. Russian artist Aleksandra Skochilenko, also known as Sasha, left, with her girlfriend, Sonia Subbotina, right, after the prisoner swap. "What would you buy that you know that your household would need for the future?" "That could be like paper towels, it could be toilet paper, it could be things that you know that you're going to need long term." It's smart to adopt a similar mindset when the stock market pulls back as it did Monday, said Sun, who is also a member of the CNBC Financial Advisor Council. "When the stock market pulls back at these levels, these are great opportunities to invest in core names or a quality portfolio that you always wanted," she said. "It's better to buy things on sale than to buy at full price."

Bell has consistently maintained that Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas and said he would be supportive of the U.S. ally if elected. Bush accused Israel of an “ethnic cleansing campaign” as the country retaliated. A group of 30 rabbis from the area endorsed Bell in the spring and accused Bush of antisemitism. The day's rout was sparked by a massive sell-off in Japanese stocks. The Nikkei fell 12.4%, its worst day since the 1987 "Black Monday" crash rattled investors around the world. Spencer Platt / Getty ImagesThe Japanese drawdown, in turn, was partly in response to the worse-than-expected jobs report published Friday that showed U.S. unemployment rising to 4.3% and just 114,000 jobs added in July. As soon as that report was published, stocks started erasing some of their earlier losses, while bond purchases, which had surged as investors sought safe-haven assets, faded. Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time. Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips. Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."

"QAnon Shaman" Jacob Chansley will regain possession of the makeshift spear and horned helmet that he carried as he stormed the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot with other Trump supporters, a federal judge ruled Monday. "Since the government has not established that it still needs these items as evidence and has not sought their forfeiture, the Court will GRANT Mr. Chansley's motion," Lamberth wrote. The DOJ last month said it wanted to hold on to Chansley's property, because despite having expressed remorse at his criminal sentencing, he has since challenged his conviction and sentence. "Even if the government may need to reprove Mr. Chansley's guilt, the government has not explained why it would need his property," the judge wrote in Monday's order. But under a full moon, those activities can be transcendent. Looking up at the night sky, on the other hand, feels as though deep mysteries may be revealed. Astrotourism, travel devoted to stargazing and other celestial activities, is booming, spurred on, in part, by DarkSky International, which aims to protect the night skies from light pollution. “Viewing our starry night sky has connected humanity throughout the ages and allowed us to form a deep connection with the cosmos,” said Susan Serven, DarkSky’s communications director. “Now it’s seen as a growing potential economic driver, as well.”It could be the breathtaking photos captured by the Hubble telescope, the Northern Lights that dazzled farther south this spring, or our growing awareness of light pollution and its impact on migratory birds, nocturnal pollinators and other wildlife that has helped catalyze interest, but the night skies are sparking invitations to explore in new ways.

(Trump himself has tried to distance himself from Project 2025 but many of his policies and goals overlap.) “Honestly, the Trump administration was often sloppy in the way they rolled out these executive orders, including the first Muslim travel ban,” Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson told CNN, referring to the Trump ban on migrants from several Muslim-majority countries that was the target of one of nearly 100 lawsuits brought by the Evergreen State against the Trump administration. “This time around, Project 2025 provides a very thorough overview over the issues in which a leading conservative organization, like the Heritage Foundation, is likely to push the Trump administration,” Romero said. Part of the Project 2025 effort has been to collect and vet thousands of potential staffers to serve up and down the federal bureaucracy of a future Trump administration. Flavor Flav Wants You to Watch More Water Polo
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( Emmanuel Morgan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As the robed members of the U.S. women’s water polo team stood single file at the pool’s edge before their match against Italy at the Paris Olympics, the rapper Flavor Flav stood directly across from them, clapping while the announcer at the Aquatics Centre in St.-Denis, France, listed the American players’ names one by one. Wearing a personalized water polo cap and jersey and a dessert-plate-size clock on a chain around his neck — all of them red, white and blue — America’s newest (and perhaps most unlikely) water polo fan leaned nervously against a glass barrier and shouted encouragement. Whenever the United States scored, he raised his wrists — both were adorned with big-faced watches — and shouted gleefully. He does not care if the players cannot hear him, he said; he prefers that they focus on their assignments anyway. “They know deep down in their hearts and they know way in the back of their mind that Flav is right there for us,” he said in an interview at a hospitality venue in Paris after the game.

Cancer is typically associated with older people, but the percentage of colorectal cancer cases in those under 55 doubled between 1995 and 2019, from 11% to 20%, according to the American Cancer Society. However, it's understood that lifestyle factors such as being overweight, being physically inactive, drinking alcohol, and eating lots of red meat and ultra-processed foods increase colon cancer risk, Meredy Birdi, a cancer dietitian based in London, told Business Insider. There's good evidence that eating fiber lowers colorectal cancer risk, she said. She shared three high-fiber lunch recipes that could help prevent colorectal cancer with BI.
