When city leaders in Boston set out last spring to renew their focus on violence prevention, they set a modest goal: reduce homicides by 20 percent in three years. Yet the longer the quiet has persisted, the more pressure the city has felt to sustain it. As summer set in with a blistering heat wave, anxiety rose. Will a seasonal uptick in violence shatter the preternatural calm? “But we are doing so many things, and hopefully it is having an impact.”

Led by Quentin Koffey, Politan has nominated two further directors to the company's board, and says that without their election, management will continue to operate without oversight. "This is shareholders' last chance at meaningful change," Politan wrote in a letter to Masimo shareholders on Wednesday, laying out its case to investors ahead of the meeting. But governance improvements have fallen short of what shareholders deserve, Koffey wrote in the letter, noting that Masimo's board "does not review, approve or see a budget." Masimo took aggressive steps to fend off Politan, introducing bylaws to force the firm to reveal its shareholder list. "For more than two years, Politan has navigated unprecedented impediments thrown up by Masimo's board," the activist said.

People are losing the cognitive and social skills they need for a thriving personal and professional life, says organizational psychologist Richard Davis. "We are at risk of losing this essential capability that I call receptivity," says Davis, the managing director of Toronto-based leadership consulting firm Russell Reynolds Associates. "It's the ability to have good judgment, to have insight about people, and it's a major concern." "It's a cognitive ability that you need to actually exercise in order to not lose it," he says. People's ability to talk to and connect with each other is similarly at risk, he says.

Last month there were $122 billion of transactions at car dealerships, according to Commerce Department estimates. That accounts for 17% of all retail sales in May. An outage lasting through June 30 would mean 10 days without dealership access to CDK. Now here’s where it gets even more glaring: Retail sales aren’t just some minor part of the economy. Consider yourself warned: You may want to hold off on looking at your 401(k) on July 25, when the government releases second-quarter GDP estimates.

Coming into and through 2019, the economy was strong and the Consumer Price Index, a key measure of inflation, was low. For some, that seemed like a bad thing — economists worried that chronically low inflation could increase the risk of future economic stagnation. The Personal Consumption Expenditures index, a slightly delayed price measure that the Fed uses for its 2 percent inflation target, similarly fell. Within a few months, inflation began to pick up. Price jumps began to moderate even in service categories, which made economists hope that the deceleration might be the real deal.

The risk of an economic slowdown now outweighs the risk of inflation, according to Morgan Stanley. But Morgan Stanley worries that the poor breadth of the market , measuring the number of advancing stocks against those declining, is a sign that slowing economic growth is becoming a bigger risk than stubbornly high inflation. To be sure, the Morgan Stanley strategist does not expect weak breadth to herald weak returns. Here are some of the quality large-cap and defensive stocks with strong upward earnings revisions that can outperform, according to Morgan Stanley. Burlington shares are higher by 25% this year, and the stock is overweight-rated by Morgan Stanley.

On the worst nights, when the thudding bass from a nearby nightclub rattled his windows and drowned out the sound on his TV, the noise in John Heaney’s home in Providence felt more like an intruder than a nuisance. “It’s a true violation because you can’t stop it,” he said. “It’s like someone has a key to your house, and they can come in whenever they want.”Driven to activism, Mr. Heaney, a retired software engineer, joined a small group of residents in the Rhode Island capital who have lobbied city officials in recent years to crack down on excessive noise. Their campaign, known as the Providence Noise Project, has won vocal support from Mayor Brett Smiley, a Democrat who took office last year. But it has also raised complicated questions about noise, including what to do when not everyone agrees it’s a problem, and how to fairly enforce limits.

Activist Commentary: Starboard is a very successful activist investor and has extensive experience helping companies focus on operational efficiency and margin improvement. With 90%+ gross margins and 35% operating margins, Autodesk is a leader in AEC software. Further, its operating margins are not much worse than those of its peers at first blush. However, Starboard correctly does not judge the company's operating margins on the mean of its peer set, but by the potential embodied in its gross margins and market position. He no longer serves on the board of Autodesk, but he could certainly be an informal advisor to Starboard – or a cautionary tale for Autodesk.

For example, a call that the S & P 500 would rise 100 points on a positive consumer price index print came true last year. That's true so far, with the S & P 500 jumping 4.8% in May after finishing April down 4.2%. As equities struggled, (the S & P 500 fell almost 20% in 2022), Lee felt like the risk of inflation was being mispriced. Because of that, he foresaw a rebound in 2023, a year that sent the S & P 500 more than 24% higher. "There was a pretty widely-held view that the Fed had to crash the economy in order to contain inflation," Lee said.

DeSantis Vetoes All Arts Grants in Florida

For the past 10 days, Richard Russell has been rattled, poring over budgets and working the phones in an attempt to limit the consequences of Gov. Mr. Russell, the general director of the Sarasota Opera on Florida’s Gulf Coast, had expected his nonprofit organization to receive a state grant of about $70,000 once Mr. DeSantis signed a budget that state lawmakers had approved in March. But in a move that stunned arts and culture organizations, Mr. DeSantis vetoed the entirety of their grant funding — about $32 million — on June 12, leaving them scrambling to figure out how to offset the shortfall. “It’s not going to close us,” Mr. Russell said. “But it is a gap that I am going to have to figure out how to make up, and if I don’t find alternate sources of funding, that could be someone’s job.”

He was joined on stage by multiple West Coast stars, including legendary rapper/producer Dr. Dre and Los Angeles Clippers player Russell Westbrook. Lamar held the show at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum.
