CNN —For the second consecutive round, play was disrupted at the Open Championship, but – this time – not by protestors. On Saturday, trespassing tasks were taken up by a tiny toad. The natterjack toad is one of Britain's rarest amphibian species. July 21 (Reuters) - Former world number one Ernie Els said the PGA Tour board should step down over the decision to merge their commercial operations with the LIV Series and described the Saudi-backed breakaway circuit as "circus golf". Els said the way the PGA Tour went about the merger without player input was an "absolute shambles" and that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan would not still be in the role if it was up to him. Don't just go rogue as a member of the board and come back with a deal and think we're all going to say 'yes'. Team golf doesn't work," added Els, who won the British Open in 2002 and 2012. That's what I prided myself on, like Tiger (Woods) and some of these guys, getting yourself into majors and grinding."

This article is part of Overlooked, a series of obituaries about remarkable people whose deaths, beginning in 1851, went unreported in The Times. In 1921, the Football Association, English soccer’s ruling body, effectively banned women from playing the sport, deeming it “quite unsuitable for females.” But by then, a standout player named Lily Parr had already gained fame for her skill on the field. Her renown was part of the growth of women’s soccer at the time, exemplified by a match in which she played at Goodison Park in Liverpool that drew a crowd of about 53,000, with thousands more outside the stadium. (It would remain the largest crowd for a women’s club soccer match for 99 years, until Atlético Madrid hosted Barcelona in front of 60,739 fans in March 2019.) Though the association’s ban would hamper Parr’s career, barring her and other women from playing in stadiums, she competed where she could, in fields and parks in England and abroad, and continued drawing attention over her 31 years with the same team, Dick, Kerr Ladies Football Club.

Thomas's round of 82 on Thursday, including a nine at the last hole, meant he was playing for pride in his second round and managed that with a level-par 71 in tough conditions. Thomas sits 13th in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings with only the top six guaranteed a spot and six more then selected by the captain. Despite his woes at Hoylake, Thomas said he actually played good golf but made too many "bonehead mistakes". Asked how he might convince Johnson to select him, Thomas said he hopes his record speaks for itself. "I love the team events.

The 27-year-old, a native of Hoylake, came through qualifying to earn a place in the 156-man field. Rory McIlroy stands a better chance of claiming the top prize, the in-form world number two warming up for the tournament by winning the Scottish Open on Sunday. A fifth major victory is long overdue for the Northern Irishman, who won the British Open in 2014 when it was also held at Royal Liverpool. American world number one Scottie Scheffler is among the early starters and will tee off at 9:47 a.m, a few minutes before defending champion Cameron Smith. The R&A, which organises the British Open, welcomed the partnership agreement and hoped for "an end to the disruption in the men's professional game".

It worked well enough for Stewart Cink on Thursday at the British Open. “When the gun goes off and you start in the tournament, you’ve got that adrenaline, and adrenaline does wonders for your jet lag,” Cink, 50, said. It also seemed to do plenty good for his scorecard, which reported a three-under-par 68 that positioned him high on the first-round leaderboard at northwest England’s Royal Liverpool Golf Club. There was Cink, who won the 2009 Open at Turnberry in Scotland by outlasting Tom Watson, then 59, in a playoff. But Christo Lamprecht, an amateur who plays for Georgia Tech, finished his five-under round with the lead.

July 20 (Reuters) - Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new captain of Manchester United, the Premier League club said on Thursday. The 28-year-old will replace defender Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the team captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag after the England international failed to secure a place in the first team. Fernandes drew criticism for his petulant performance in the 7-0 loss to rivals Liverpool in March. "When you hit it into these bunkers you're sort of riding your luck at that point. McIlroy came close to winning last year's Open when he led into the final day only to be reeled in by Cameron Smith. It may be the shortest hole on the course, but Royal Liverpool’s par-three 17th hole is already proving a tall order for some players at the 151st edition of the tournament. A former bank building in Kirkby, Liverpool, in the north of England, is being refurbished for use as offices and is not being converted to house asylum seekers, as social media users claim. Posts circulating online say the former bank building, which is currently being refurbished, is to be converted to house “up to 2,000 asylum seekers” without the knowledge of the public. It said proposals to house asylum seekers would require planning approval from the council, with planning approval subject to public consultation. The building is in fact being promoted as office accommodation, according to Knowsley Council and agents for the building. 5 Players to Watch at the British Open

It seems like only yesterday that the best golfers in the game were battling for a green jacket at the Masters Tournament, the season’s first major. With mid-July here, however, the stage is set for the final major, the British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, which begins on Thursday. It will be fascinating to see if Wyndham Clark, who was a surprise winner in the United States Open in June, can back it up at the British Open — and whether the world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, whose name always seems to be on the leaderboard, will make enough putts to win his second major after taking the Masters last year.

He last played a tour event in 2017, finishing with career earnings of more than $13.7 million. Fleetwood was born in Southport, around 30 miles north of Royal Liverpool, and the world number 21 would be a popular champion after a couple of near-misses. Of course, she said, she was conscious that being handpicked by Australia’s prime minister to carry her country’s flag at the coronation was an “amazing, amazing honor.” It would, she acknowledged, probably be the sort of thing she would “tell my kids about in 10 or 15 years.”

Royal Liverpool is hosting the British Open, which starts on Thursday, for the third time in 20 years. And the biggest deciding factor in how the course plays and who wins could be the one thing that the R&A, golf’s governing body in Britain, has no control over: the weather. When Tiger Woods won here in 2006, the course was firm and baked out, with temperatures approaching 100 degrees. Eight years later, Rory McIlroy played the same course, which dates from 1869, in vastly different conditions. The temperatures were in the 70s, and a severe rainstorm blew through after the third round.

What do a cow, a koala, a camel, a Tasmanian devil and now a finch all have in common? They are nicknames given to a weird class of space explosions scientists can’t explain. They are more technically called luminous fast blue optical transients, or LFBOTs. These space explosions are much brighter than supernovas (which occur when stars explode), hence the “luminous” designation. They brighten quickly — hence “fast” — and are extremely hot, reaching 70,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and thus emitting “blue” light.
