CNN —Some Kia, Hyundai, and Honda models are getting stolen in New York City so often that the Mayor is giving out Apple AirTags to help residents track their vehicles. The city plans to distribute 500 AirTags to residents to place in their cars to combat car thefts in target neighborhoods, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced at a press conference on Sunday. Adams made the announcement in a Bronx neighborhood that has seen over 200 car thefts this year alone – the highest of any precinct in the city. The Hyundai and Kia vehicles in question include the Hyundai Santa Fe and Tucson, and the Kia Forte and Sportage, with 2015-2019 model years. So far this year, the NYPD has recorded thefts of 966 Kia and Hyundai cars – marking an increase of 819 cars since last year, Chell said.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and his police department have asked residents to help fight vehicle theft in the city by placing Apple AirTags in their cars. The New York City Police Department shared a video Sunday demonstrating how residents can use an AirTag to protect their vehicles. "AirTags in your car will help us recover your vehicle if it's stolen," the NYPD tweet said. "We'll use our drones, our StarChase technology & good old fashion police work to safely recover your stolen car. Adams said Sunday that AirTags are an "excellent" tracking device that he believes will help slow rates of car theft in the city.

With voters going through a cost-of-living crisis and inflation stubbornly high at about 10%, local council votes in much of England on May 4 give Labour an opportunity to prove their electoral credentials. Swindon has returned lawmakers representing the winning party at every national election since 1983, making it a bellwether and a key target for Labour, who chose the town for the launch of their local election campaign. "Whilst Sunak's personal poll ratings aren't great, they're not toxic in the way that his predecessors have been," he said. David Renard, the Conservative leader of Swindon Borough Council, said the national picture might hinder his attempts to focus the campaign on more local issues. In its town centre, many voters expressed unhappiness with the Conservatives but some had a degree of sympathy for Sunak personally.
TOKYO, April 28 (Reuters) - Japan will provide as much as $1.8 billion in subsidies for a slate of storage battery and chip-related projects, Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said on Friday, marking Tokyo's latest push towards greater supply chain security. The government plans to give up to 184.6 billion yen ($1.38 billion) in subsidies for eight storage battery-related proposals and up to 56.4 billion yen for two semiconductor-related projects, Nishimura told reporters. Among the proposals that it will subsidise is a plan by automaker Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) and battery maker GS Yuasa Corp (6674.T) to invest about 430 billion yen to boost storage battery production, with the ministry providing up to 158.7 billion yen in subsidies for the project. "We have great expectations that this will lead to the stable supply of storage batteries and the promotion of GX (green transformation)," Nishimura said. In a statement, Honda, GS Yuasa and their 14-year-old battery joint venture Blue Energy Co Ltd, said they planned to start production in April 2027 and would start mass production in October 2027.
TOKYO, April 27 (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) and battery maker GS Yuasa Corp (6674.T) will invest over 400 billion yen ($2.99 billion) and team up to produce batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and homes, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Thursday. The companies will start by building a new plant in Japan, targeting a production capacity of at least 20 gigawatt hours (GWh), the Nikkei added, without citing sources. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry would provide a subsidy of about 150 billion yen, the newspaper added, without specifying whether that would be only for building the factory. GS Yuasa could not be immediately reached outside of regular office hours. SHANGHAI, April 17 (Reuters) - China's auto market, the world’s largest, is accelerating toward an electric future – leaving established global brands stuck in the slow lane. China’s passenger car sales were down 13% in the first quarter, data from the China Passenger Car Association show. But sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids – an area where Chinese automakers led by BYD now dominate – were up 22%. BYD dominates China’s market for plug-in hybrids, cars that have a combustion engine but are capable of being charged and running for shorter distances on electric power. In a further threat to established brands, China’s exports are growing fast, led by EVs and PHEVs.

The Spaniard's surprise victory on a clear afternoon in Texas was a first for his LCR Honda team since Britain's Cal Crutchlow in Argentina in 2018. Italian Luca Marini, MotoGP great Valentino Rossi's half-brother, was second for the VR46 Ducati team and France's 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo completed the podium on a Yamaha. AUSTIN, Texas, April 16 (Reuters) - MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia was baffled and angry after throwing away 25 points by crashing out of Sunday's Grand Prix of the Americas while leading from pole position. "For the second weekend in a row I don't know (how it happened)," Bagnaia, who won the Saturday sprint but is now 11 points behind Bezzecchi after three rounds, told BT Sport. I did many, many laps this weekend without having any issues, and then in the race just controlling, I crashed." Bagnaia said something different had happened on the bike compared to two weeks ago in Argentina, when he had pushed perhaps too hard and crashed out of second place. "It's true that our bike is so fast, so competitive, but then if you crash and you don't know why it doesn't help anything," he added.

March was the first time in months car buyers didn't shell out more than a vehicle was listed for. For comparison, just a year earlier, consumers were paying on average nearly $1,000 more than the sticker price for a new car. Exceptions include Honda and Kia vehicles, which continue to sell for between 3 and 6% over sticker price in the non-luxury market. In addition to the newfound difference in sticker price versus the price actually paid, new car prices have been trending downward overall for months now. March's average price paid is down from February's $48,558, January's $49,388, and December's $49,507.

By 2032, electric vehicles would need to make up about two-thirds of all the new cars sold in America. And even as EV market share rises to two-thirds, it’s not like EVs will flood America’s roads overnight, he said. Reaching two-thirds EV market share mark by 2032 isn’t a sure thing, said Cantor, but it should be manageable. The increasing number of automakers entering the EV market will also help, said Ivan Drury, an industry analyst with Edmunds.com. General Motors also has a number of EV models coming in the next year or two.

A new EV platform, if implemented, would be the result of a far-reaching review of Toyota's electric-car strategy undertaken last year. Its current production architecture, the e-TNGA system, was launched in 2019 and produces electric vehicles on the same assembly line as gasoline cars and hybrids. The briefing was given by the former chief competitive officer tasked with the EV strategy review, Shigeki Terashi, according to the person. So far it has fallen short - its initial battery EV, the bZ4X, suffered an early recall and has had only limited sales. GM sold more than 20,000 electric vehicles during the first quarter while Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus sold about 1,880 battery electrics.
Companies Honda Motor Co Ltd FollowApril 6 (Reuters) - Honda Motor (7267.T) said Thursday it is recalling 563,000 CR-V sport utility vehicles sold or registered in cold weather U.S. states because road salt may cause the frame to corrode and possibly detach the rear trailing arm. The recall covers 2007 through 2011 model year CR-V vehicles in 22 states and the District of Columbia where road salt is routinely used. Dealers will inspect and install a support brace or repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Honda issued a recall for nearly 84,000 CR-V vehicles in Canada in 2019 for the same issue. In 2020, Honda repurchased a U.S. vehicle after observing rear frame rust and began to investigate the issue.
