A piece of equipment called a distributor used to hold trays of limestone for capturing carbon is seen at the Heirloom Carbon Technologies facility in Brisbane, California, U.S. February 1, 2023. Direct Air Capture such as that used by Heirloom can secure the CO2, but it is not yet clear whether it can do so at a price that makes the technology practical. The new facility, which uses crushed limestone to capture 1,000 tonnes a year, is part of a ramp up that Heirloom says will cut costs. Current industry prices for carbon removal by direct air capture are around $600-$1,000 a tonne, one person familiar with the situation said. The Department of Energy is spending billions in grants to built Direct Air Capture demonstration hubs.

Closed-end funds offer a fixed number of shares, but they also trade publicly on exchanges. Right now, a confluence of events is resulting in some sharp discounts for closed-end funds, especially for those that hold bonds. Investors in closed-end funds have shed some of those holdings and that's resulting in sharper discounts to net asset value. Asset management giant BlackRock appeared to take the first steps toward an ether ETF on Thursday, sparking a rally in the cryptocurrency. A similar notice for the iShares Bitcoin Trust came one week before BlackRock's filing for a bitcoin ETF in June. The Securities and Exchange Commission has still not approved a bitcoin ETF. The regulator has long opposed such a fund and blocked Grayscale's attempt to convert its bitcoin trust product into an ETF, though a court overruled that decision in August. If the SEC does allow bitcoin ETFs, then ether funds would likely be next in line.

Edelman also founded Edelman Financial, a large firm of registered investment advisors. The potential of a bitcoin ETF has appeared to help fuel a recent rally in the cryptocurrency. Concerns from advisors Crypto's dramatic rise has largely come without the embrace of the traditional financial system, such as financial advisors and major banks. But not all financial advisors seem ready to embrace crypto just because investing in it is simpler. Client demand Even if advisors are skeptical of crypto, the arrival of bitcoin ETFs is sure to generate more questions from clients.

BlackRock registered the iShares Ethereum Trust as a Delaware statutory trust on Thursday. Earlier this year, BlackRock registered a bitcoin trust in the same manner and a week later filed an application with the SEC to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. BlackRock declined to comment on the trust's creation or on any plans for an ETF filing. To date, roughly a dozen ETF providers have filed to create spot bitcoin ETFs, or convert existing products into spot ETFs, helping fuel the recent rally in the cryptocurrency. Several other ETF providers that have applied for spot bitcoin ETFs also have sought SEC approval for spot ether ETFs, including Ark Investment Management, Invesco and VanEck.

U.S. investors rebuff big oil climate shareholder resolutions
  + stars: | 2023-11-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Netherlands-based activist group Follow This was created first to target Shell (SHEL.L) and subsequently expanded to file climate resolutions at other western majors including BP (BP.L), Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), Chevron (CVX.N) and TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA). According to the data published by it and investors, giant U.S. investors BlackRock (BLK.N), Vanguard, State Street (STT.N) and JPMorgan (JPM.N) all voted against the Follow This resolutions this year. "Investors hold the key to tackling the climate crisis with their shareholder voting power at Big Oil. Amundi, Allianz, and UBS use their voting power to mitigate the climate crisis,” said Follow This founder Mark van Baal. This mirrors big shareholder proxy voting firm Glass Lewis and ISS, which changed some of their recommendations for this year to the detriment of Follow This, including withdrawing support for the activist resolution at Chevron.

Hong Kong CNN —The world’s second largest economy is struggling to attract foreign companies and investments, despite Beijing’s efforts to address its myriad economic challenges, according to new data from China. A gauge of foreign direct investment (FDI) into China has slipped into the red for the first time since 1998, underscoring the country’s failure to stem capital outflows. It suggests foreign companies may be taking their money out of the country, instead of re-investing in their operations. Direct investment liabilities include profits belonging to foreign companies that have not yet been repatriated or distributed to shareholders, as well as foreign investment in financial institutions, according to the government. Late last month, China’s legislature approved one trillion yuan ($137 billion) in sovereign bonds to support the economy.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Ratings agency Moody's (MCO.N) is creating a unit to research and rate private credit, the firm said on Monday. The global private credit market, with more than $1.3 trillion in assets under management, makes up about 12% of the alternatives market, investment firm BlackRock said in a recent report. Private credit is largely owned by buy-and-holdinvestors such as pension funds, endowments, foundations and insurance companies, the report said. "The rapid growth of the private credit market in recent years has introduced new challenges and opportunities for investors, who are looking for fresh analysis from a trusted source," said Moody's president Michael West. Gen Z is the most financially savvy generation

AdvertisementAdvertisementIn a May survey from the CFA Institute, a global trade association for investment advisors, more than half of Gen Z respondents said they were already investing, and 82% of American Gen Z investors said they began investing before they turned 21. And while there are plenty of pitfalls and missteps that could plague young people along the way, Gen Z is shaping up to be the most financially savvy generation yet. The estimated $60 billion wipeout caused many Gen Z investors to lose big. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile Gen Z may not always be drawn to the safest investment choices, it's certainly getting some hands-on learning. In many respects, Gen Z is coming of age at a good time, graduating into a booming job market with strong wage growth.

BlackRock Chief Investment Officer of Fixed Income Rick Rieder said investors underestimate actively managed fixed income exchange-traded funds. He told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week that one of his firm's newest fixed income funds, the BlackRock Flexible Income ETF (BINC), has outperformed peers because its allocations are based on current market opportunity. "The beauty of this active ETF is we can move around and take advantage of where the opportunity is," said Rieder, who manages roughly $2.6 trillion in fixed income assets. "I think active ETFs in fixed income, people underestimate." U.S. high yield credit follows at nearly 17%, then U.S. investment grade credit at approximately 14% of total allocations.

New York CNN —It took just under a year for Sam Bankman-Fried to go from crypto wunderkind to convicted felon. When Bankman-Fried’s crypto empire collapsed last November, it sent the fledgling industry back years. For the crypto faithful who are still standing and striving, the trial couldn’t be over soon enough. “A lot of folks in the crypto industry are delighted,” said Yesha Yadav, a law professor and associate dean at Vanderbilt University. “There’s definitely an element of ‘ding-dong the witch is dead,’” said Eric Soufer, a political adviser to major crypto companies, referring to Bankman-Fried’s conviction.

Both changes to the process for designating a non-bank as a "systemically important financial institution," or SIFI, were proposed in April. Friday's vote reversed a Trump administration policy that regulators should police risky activities rather than single out individual firms. Under the revamped process, FSOC will identify potential SIFIs based on existing information and give the company a chance to respond. Similarly, the Managed Funds Association, which represents hedge funds, said non-banks do not pose the same risks as banks. "The guidance imposes a black box designation process that introduces uncertainty for market participants," said MFA President and CEO Bryan Corbett.
