After two years of the double pain of inflation and high interest rates, those things are normalizing. Sure, jobs were plentiful and the economy was growing, but the combination of high prices and high interest rates felt demoralizing. It’s hard to overstate how much interest rates can change the economic mood, Brendan Duke, a senior director for economic policy at the Center for American Progress, told me. And while both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have proposed ways to increase the housing supply, the process will take years. “There are economic trends like falling interest rates, and there are policies like making an investment in housing supply that can move the needle,” Duke says.

CNN —For Shannon Rowbury, it was simultaneously one of the best and worst moments of her running career. Today, the women’s 1,500-meter final at the London 2012 Olympics is considered one of the dirtiest races in the history of track and field. Her US teammate, Alysia Montaño, also discovered this year that, having originally placed fifth in the 800 meters, she is now set to receive a bronze medal from the London Olympics due to doping violations by rivals. Now, she is learning to appreciate those things in ways that didn’t seem possible when she was a professional athlete. “I had kind of cut out all of the fun by the end, it felt like,” says Rowbury.

Kupol, Almaz-Antey and the Russian defense ministry did not respond to requests for comment for this article. "China cannot continue to fuel the largest conflict in Europe since the Second World War without this impacting its interests and reputation." The pro-Trump cable outlet Newsmax and voting technology company Smartmatic settled a major 2020 election defamation lawsuit Thursday in a last-minute agreement to avoid a high-stakes trial. But in the run-up to the trial, Smartmatic’s hand weakened significantly, further raising the possibility of a settlement. Smartmatic has claimed that the lies promoted by Newsmax, Fox News, and other Trump allies destroyed its reputation and cost the company billions of dollars. However, as the Newsmax trial approached, Smartmatic’s lawyers reduced the company’s damages claim to approximately $370 million, according to statements in court. It often makes sense to settle rather than pay the expenses of a trial and possible appeals.”The settlement is the latest in a string of 2020 election defamation cases to reach an out-of-court agreement before trial.

Opinion | The Tech Bro Style in American Politics

It seems hard to believe now, but in 2021, Time named Elon Musk its Person of the Year. Musk’s right-wing turn isn’t universal or even typical: Reporting suggests that even with the rightward turn of several boldface names, Silicon Valley remains heavily Democratic. But right-wing tech bros are exerting a significant and, I’d argue, malign influence on the political landscape. Consider the case of JD Vance, the junior senator from Ohio and Donald Trump’s running mate. He’s a remarkable campaigner — remarkable, that is, in the sense that he seems incredibly bad at it.

And it’ll be tough for either Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump to turn that around if elected, no matter their grandiose campaign promises. Put together, such investments have resulted in a sharp pick-up in construction spending by manufacturers, according to government data. Manufacturing’s main pain points are sluggish demand and elevated interest rates, according to recent manufacturing surveys by the Institute for Supply Management and S&P Global. And, of course, there are issues specific to certain sectors of the manufacturing industry. It could get better, but it’s not clear whenIt’s not all doom and gloom for the manufacturing industry.

I wanted to taste a descendant of those ancient peppers, Peru’s native ají amarillo. Now it was time to learn how this distillation of ají amarillo manifested in local dishes. I felt as if this might be the closest I’d yet come to really tasting ají amarillo, its frank optimism, its essence as a fruit. The ají amarillo sauce was frozen into a shimmery yellow dust that turned to leche de tigre on the plate. Then came the soup, made of ají amarillo gone long on the stove with fish stock and fermented corn.

CNN —Japan’s ruling party will elect its new leader Friday, and the winner will become the country’s next prime minister. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is not in the running after his surprise announcement last month that he would step down following a series of political scandals that fueled calls for him to resign. With the upcoming US presidential election, the new prime minister will navigate Japan’s relations with a new American leader at a time of growing security challenges in Asia, including an increasingly assertive China and a belligerent North Korea. Koizumi, 43, is the US-educated, charismatic son of popular former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, and could be Japan’s youngest prime minister of the post-war period. He sits on the more progressive wing of the conservative party.

Trump has said he would consider new tariffs on imports from the country at rates of 60% or higher. watch nowU.S. allies could become a key target of Trump's "America First" policy that is increasingly grouping European and Asian partners alongside rival China. "We have been treated so badly, mostly by allies ... our allies treat us actually worse than our so-called enemies," Trump said at a rally in Wisconsin earlier this month. Retaliation by other U.S. trade partners — whether that be via reciprocal, retaliatory tariffs, or other non-tariff measures — is a potential consequence of all of this," Marro said. Murdoch and his eldest children descended on a Reno courthouse to appear for evidentiary hearings in a secret trial to determine whether the 93-year-old can alter the family trust that he established decades ago, giving his four oldest children equal votes over the future of his conservative media empire after he dies. Murdoch wants to amend the trust so that his eldest son and chosen successor, Lachlan, will remain in charge for decades to come. But the three other Murdoch children — James, Elisabeth and Prudence — oppose the change, and have challenged it in court. In the coming days or weeks, a probate commissioner will issue a report and recommendation on whether Murdoch can change the family trust, according to Elyse Tyrell, an attorney in Las Vegas who specializes in trusts and estates. Each party will then have 10 days to object to his report and recommendation, Tyrell said.

While it's important to have a diet of nutrient-rich foods, how you eat them is essential to getting the most benefit. And when you eat plant foods high in iron with foods rich in vitamin C, you're able to absorb more iron. "People who don't get enough calcium and vitamin D throughout life have an increased chance of having thin and brittle bones (osteoporosis) in their later years," according to Kaiser Permanente. And "your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium." The source of vitamin D you'll receive from the sunlight can help you get more calcium, Perez noted.
