REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer/IllustrationJuly 17 (Reuters) - Americans are increasingly getting shot down when they seek out loans, new data from the New York Fed, released Monday, said. The bank said that the overall rejection rate for credit applicants rose to its highest level since June 2018, and stood at 21.8%, from 17.3% in February. Rejection rates for credit cards, credit limit increases also gained ground. The rejection rate for mortgages stood at 13.2% in June from 10% in February, while the rejection rate for mortgage refinancing jumped to 20.8% last month, from 16.3% in the prior survey. The surge in home lending costs has caused Americans to cut back on borrowing there: The New York Fed reported in May that during the first quarter demand for mortgages fell even as overall household debt levels ticked higher.

July 17 (Reuters) - There is no doubt that higher interest rates are hard on a many people – especially if you are taking out a loan on a home or a car, or are struggling to catch up with credit-card debt. But for some, steep interest rates are not actually bad news. In fact, 38% of people say they have benefited from higher interest rates during the past year, according to a new survey from Allianz Life Insurance. “That’s the dichotomy: Higher interest rates are both crushing some people and benefiting others at the same time,” says Kelly LaVigne, vice president of Consumer Insights for Allianz Life. That means if you have some savings set aside, it is time to think about how to flip this negative of higher interest rates into a positive.

United Airlines pilots reach labor agreement, boost pay
  + stars: | 2023-07-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
CHICAGO, July 15 (Reuters) - United Airlines (UAL.O) and its pilots on Saturday reached a labor agreement that will give the latter a significant pay increase, after the union rejected an earlier offer last year instead to seek even higher wages with pilots in short supply. The pilots will get cumulative 34.5%-40.2% increase in pay raises in a new four-year contract, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said. "We're pleased to have reached an agreement with ALPA," United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said. United, Delta, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) are estimated to hire about 8,000 pilots this year. United pilots turned down a deal last year that included more than 14.5% in cumulative wage increases and enhanced overtime and training pay.

The Peach State lost more than 90% of this year’s crop after a February heat wave followed by two late-spring frosts. It’s even on the flip side of the Georgia state quarter. SAN FRANCISCO, July 14 (Reuters) - SK Signet (260870.KN) told Reuters on Friday that it has signed a deal to supply 1,000 electric vehicle chargers to Francis Energy, in a move to tap federal funding on charging stations nationwide. The two are among several companies which were selected by Ohio state to receive more than $18 million in combined federal funds to build 27 electric vehicle fast charging stations along some of its interstate corridors. SK Signet, which also counts charging station operators Electrify America and EVgo (EVGO.O) as its customers, last month opened its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Texas. Ohio said all 27 stations announced this week will have the required Combined Charging System (CCS) plug, not Tesla connectors. "We’re considering whether to require it (the Tesla connector) or make it an optional enhancement in future rounds," a state official told Reuters.

The sun’s activity is peaking sooner than expected

Every 11 years or so, the sun experiences periods of low and high solar activity, which is associated with the amount of sunspots on its surface. Over the course of a solar cycle, the sun will transition from a calm to an intense and active period. During the peak of activity, called solar maximum, the sun’s magnetic poles flip. A solar activity spikeThe current solar cycle, known as Solar Cycle 25, has been full of activity, more so than expected. The solar storms generated by the sun can affect electric power grids, GPS and aviation, and satellites in low-Earth orbit.

BOGOTA, July 14 (Reuters) - A crash in the price of coca, the chief ingredient in cocaine, is contributing to food insecurity in Colombia and causing displacement, as people leave areas that depend on the illicit crop, according to an internal United Nations presentation seen by Reuters. Historically coca crops have provided better incomes than legal alternatives for thousands of rural Colombian families, with drug-trafficking groups often footing the costs of transport, fertilizers and other supplies. "There is no cash to buy food and the inflation of (food prices) is rising," the presentation, dated June, said. Oversupply of coca - including more productive plants and record crops - is contributing to the crash, along with slow growth of trafficking routes and new coca cultivation in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, the presentation said. Other reasons for falling coca prices include territorial disputes between trafficking groups and imports of synthetic opioid fentanyl to the United States, a major cocaine consumer, it added.

This week's forecast for seeing the northern lights across the US was hopeful, but it's now unlikely. Predictions for a stunning display of the northern lights across the continental US this week were promising, but forecasters say it's unlikely now. Usually the northern lights are only visible north of the continental US, in snowy Arctic regions. Scientists rely on observations of space and solar activity in order to forecast the northern lights, but things can change quickly. Even in the days and hours leading to a possible appearance of the northern lights, it's still difficult to predict them.

BEIRUT, July 12 (Reuters) - The alleged abuse of toddlers at a daycare in crisis-stricken Lebanon has sparked alarm over the physical and emotional wellbeing of children in the country, where a nearly four-year economic meltdown is seeping into all aspects of life. The videos - shot on a mobile phone months ago but only recently circulated on social media - prompted an outcry from parents. Lebanon's health ministry meanwhile said in an online statement on Tuesday that it had shut down the daycare after carrying out a "rapid investigation" into the alleged violence. "This closure is not enough, and the punishment must be a lesson," the statement quoted minister Firas al-Abiad as saying. "That was just the tip of the iceberg, what we saw this week at the nursery," Higgins said.

The Northern Lights are expected to be visible from 17 states on Thursday. It includes places as far south as New York and Maryland, The Associated Press reported. You should get away from city lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time to get a good view. Thursday's lights are set to be more visible as the forecasted solar storm will result in increased auroral activity. According to the Geophysical Institute, in one rare event in 1958, the Northern Lights were even visible from Mexico City.

Last month, after Spain’s conservative and hard-right parties crushed the left in local elections, the winners in Elche, a small southeastern town known for an ancient sculpture and shoe exports, signed an agreement with consequences for the future of Spain — and the rest of Europe. The candidate from the conservative Popular Party had a chance to govern, but he needed the hard-right Vox party, which, in return for its support during council votes, received the deputy mayor position and a new administrative body to defend the traditional family. They inked their deal under the cross of the local church. “This coalition model could be a good model for the whole of Spain,” said Pablo Ruz Villanueva, Elche’s new mayor, referring to upcoming national elections on July 23, which most polls suggest will oust the liberal prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. The new deputy mayor from Vox, Aurora Rodil Martínez, went further: “My party will do everything that’s necessary to make that happen.”If Ms. Rodil’s wish comes true, with Vox joining a coalition with more moderate conservatives, it would become the first right-wing party since the dictatorship of Francisco Franco to enter the national government.

June 30 (Reuters) - Artificial intelligence chips from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) are about 80% as fast as those from Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), with a future path to matching their performance, according a Friday report by an AI software firm. Nvidia dominates the market for the powerful chips that are used to create ChatGPT and other AI services that have swept through the technology industry in recent months. That prompted MosaicML, an AI startup acquired for $1.3 billion earlier this week, to conduct a test comparing between AI chips from AMD and Nvidia. Tang said that MosaicML used its tools, the PyTorch and AMD software to train a large language model without having to make any changes to its code base. If developers can find AMD's chips at the right price, "you can already switch to these today they're essentially interchangeable" with Nvidia chips, Tang said.

June 30 (Reuters) - The armorer for the movie "Rust" allegedly transferred cocaine to an unnamed person to dispose of evidence on the day the film's cinematographer was shot dead in 2021, special prosecutors said as they sought protection for a witness. Prosecutors last week charged Gutierrez-Reed, 25, with an additional charge of tampering with evidence over the alleged transfer of narcotics. "Like everything else with the state's case and investigation, it's full of sound and fury, but signifying nothing," Bowles said in a statement. Gutierrez-Reed is the only person still facing charges for Hutchins' death after prosecutors dismissed charges against Baldwin and reached a plea agreement with first assistant director Dave Halls. In the Thursday court filing, prosecutors requested the witness’ identity be protected, saying the person feared being blacklisted from the film industry.

The yield curve's inversions deepened in June after Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated that the central bank would likely raise rates two more times this year. Stronger-than-expected economic data on Thursday backed expectations that the Fed will keep interest rates higher for longer. Treasury yields- which move inversely to prices - moved up, with 10-year and two-year yields hitting their highest since March 10 and 9, respectively, while some curve inversions intensified. The spread between one- and 30-year Treasury yields was as wide as 153 basis points on Wednesday, its biggest gap since 1981. Key areas of the U.S. economy, including housing and labor, have proven resilient despite higher rates.
