A Ukrainian drone commander says his unit can use $100 million to carry out 5,000 lethal strikes, per The Atlantic. The big takeaway was that, on average, for each $20,000 spent on his unit, Ukraine could score one kill on Russian forces. According to The Atlantic's writers, the commander's slides said that a drone unit funded with $100 million could stay on the battlefield for a full year, carrying out 5,000 lethal strikes. AdvertisementThe commander is based out of Kharkiv, according to his Telegram channel, which publishes clips of his drones attacking Russian forces and equipment. In February, Ukraine's then-military chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, called for a mindset shift away from a reliance on Western aid and instead toward cheap drones.

The AI bubble, Taylor said, will be similar to the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s. AdvertisementThe buzz surrounding AI may echo the exuberance and excesses of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s, OpenAI chairman Bret Taylor said in a podcast that aired on Wednesday. "I think the AI bubble will rhyme with the dot-com bubble and I believe with the benefit of hindsight, most of the excess of the dot-com bubble might have been justified," Taylor added. Most of today's leading tech companies like Amazon and Google, Taylor said, were started during the dot-com bubble. Advertisement"A huge percentage of the gains in the stock market over the past 30 years have more or less been these digital companies created in the dot-com bubble," Taylor said.

George Gascón, the Los Angeles district attorney, said on Thursday that his office was reviewing a decades-old case involving the brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home and were sentenced to life in prison. The case in the 1990s was one of the first to draw a daily national audience to a televised criminal trial. Defense lawyers for the brothers argued that they had been sexually molested for years by their father, and had killed out of fear. Mr. Gascón wouldn’t indicate which way he was leaning, but his remarks indicated that the sex abuse claims are among the aspects his office was reviewing. He said his office was divided over whether the brothers should remain in prison for the rest of their lives.

WASHINGTON — A group of national security experts led by Cabinet members from the Trump administration endorsed former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, citing his foreign policy record and calling him "a peacemaker." The group, organized by former Trump national security adviser Robert O'Brien and former National Security Council chief of staff Alex Gray, wrote in a letter that "securing peace" is "the legacy of Trump." The letter comes amid an escalating conflict in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, as well as Russia's war in Ukraine. "The policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have invited conflict, diminished America’s standing around the globe, and imperiled our national security," the letter says. The signers do not include Trump's first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, or his secretaries of defense, James Mattis and Mark Esper.

WASHINGTON — During Donald Trump’s White House tenure, Republicans assembled the most conservative Supreme Court in a century. Now, they’re excited about the prospect of building on those efforts by confirming even more conservative justices, as well as lower-court judges, if he wins another four years. Two long-serving conservative justices will be on retirement watch in the coming years: Clarence Thomas, 76, and Samuel Alito, 74. It takes 51 votes to confirm a Supreme Court justice, so in that scenario Republicans would have the power to replace them without any input from Democrats. The idea behind a high-risk pool was to provide a safety net for people with pre-existing conditions struggling to find coverage. The high-risk pools, however, were critically underfunded, making monthly premiums for some patients double what they would be for a healthy individual, Cox said. “If you got into a high-risk pool, you might have had an exclusion on your coverage for six to 12 months,” Cox said. “When it doesn’t, it collapses.”Graves said that the U.S. could move back to a high-risk pool model but it would require “a massive amount of government subsidies to work.”“They would basically have to infuse the high-risk pool with enough subsidies to keep premiums affordable for people,” he said. “We had isolated pre-existing pools for the past 25 years, and they don’t work.”

A California doctor is expected to plead guilty Wednesday in a deal with federal prosecutors over the fatal overdose of “Friends” star Matthew Perry last year. According to an 18-count indictment filed in August, Chavez is one of five individuals charged in connection with Perry's accidental overdose. The other individuals charged in connection with Perry’s death include the actor’s live-in personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, 60, and Erik Fleming, 54, a friend of Perry’s who authorities described as a “street dealer.” Both have pleaded guilty and await sentencing. Also charged is Jasveen Sangha, 41, an alleged drug dealer known as the “ketamine queen” who has pleaded not guilty. “We allege each of the defendants played a key role in his death by falsely prescribing, selling or injecting the ketamine that caused Matthew Perry’s tragic death,” Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram said when the charges were announced.

In Detroit as in the rest of the U.S., the violent crime rate has dropped and is near historic lows. Last month, new FBI numbers showed that murder declined 11.6% in 2023, the largest single year drop on record. But Trump and his allies have also cherrypicked statistics and falsely told supporters that FBI crime data can’t be believed. Crime data skeptics also have attributed declining crime numbers to “woke prosecutors” who are failing to file charges. But Trump uses these low 2020 and 2021 victim survey numbers, despite the doubts cast on them, to argue that violent crime has spiked significantly during the Biden-Harris administration.

Two rapid-attribution studies released Tuesday found that human-caused global warming made Hurricane Helene stronger and wetter, elements that contributed to the storm's destructive power. A report from ClimaMeter, a consortium that analyzes extreme weather events, found that Helene’s rainfall totals and winds were strengthened by human-driven climate change, with the rainfall up to 20% heavier and winds up to 7% stronger. The consortium noted that elevated temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico — something climate scientists have been warning about for years — likely contributed to Helene's power. "Furthermore, we estimate that the observed rainfall was made up to 20 times more likely in these areas because of global warming," the report added. Copious research has revealed a strong link between climate change and rapidly intensifying and wetter tropical systems because warmer atmosphere allows for heavier rain over land.

With just over a month before the election, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has been courting a group of Asian American voters, Filipino Americans, that may play a decisive role in the crucial swing state of Nevada. While Asian Americans make up almost 12% of Nevada’s electorate, well over the previous margin of victory, Filipino Americans constitute by far the largest ethnic group in that demographic. The ad blitz follows several other efforts made in the past few months to mobilize the Asian American community. TOKYO — A regional airport in southwest Japan was closed on Wednesday after a U.S. bombshell, most likely dropped during World War II to stem “kamikaze” attacks, exploded near its runway, causing nearly 90 flight cancellations. Miyazaki Airport shut its runway after the explosion caused a crater 23 feet wide and nearly 3 feet deep in the middle of the taxiway next to the runway, according to a Japanese transport ministry official. No injuries were reported, but live cam footage showed an airplane had been taxiing nearby just two minutes before the explosion, according to local broadcaster MRT. Multiple unexploded bombs have previously been found at Miyazaki airport, the transport ministry official said. More than 79 years since the end of the war, unexploded bombs from the intense airstrikes are still found across Japan today.
