Today, the federal fund rate is 5.00%, with the federal fund target rate being 4.75% to 5.00%. How the federal funds rate worksThe federal funds rate, or the overnight rate, is the interest commercial banks charge when they lend money to one another for extremely short-term periods — literally, overnight. But the latest provisional data shows that overdose deaths made a sharp turn at the end of last year and have been trending down for months. There were about 101,000 overdose deaths in the year ending in April, CDC estimates. Overdose deaths involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are down 20% year-over-year, CDC data shows. These drugs are now involved in about two-thirds of all fatal overdoses, down from more than three-quarters of all overdose deaths a year ago. “We’ve been riding a better than 20-year peak in terms of the continuous increases of drug overdoses,” Pamplin said.

It used to be that you saw a stretch limousine and excitedly wondered who was inside — maybe a corporate executive or a celebrity or some other classy, mysterious type. The limo industry isn't dead; it's just leaving the classic black stretch version of itself behind. Trade shows and expos for limousines and luxury transportation no longer have many, if any, actual classic stretch limos on their floors. He said they keep a stretch limo around for nostalgia's sake more than anything. A CEO gallivanting around in his or her fancy stretch limousine is gross.

Tom Lee is not sold on the stock market's rally after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates. The S & P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average popped to fresh records Thursday, a day after the Fed lowered rates by a half percentage point. Many investors expected the central bank to lower rates by just a quarter percentage point. Lee was correctly bullish heading into 2024 and has nailed several bold short-term calls on the market. Despite the mixed backdrop, Lee said small-cap and cyclical stocks, such as industrials and financials, stand to benefit from lower rates.

The best way to approach health care, in addition to traditional medicine, in Hotz's opinion, is social prescribing. This is the future Julia Hotz, author of " The Connection Cure ," hopes will become a reality in every country. Or you can create your own art to channel some of the heavy emotions you're feeling into something beautiful. Search for belonging when you're feeling lonelyOne of the most fundamental human needs is to have a sense of belonging, Hotz says. What a Fed rate cut could mean for the world

watch nowThe U.S. Federal Reserve is on Wednesday heading for its first interest rate cut since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic — and despite the move being widely forecast, global investors are braced for impact. Global impactA key concern is the pressure interest rate differentials put on currencies. Oil and other commodities, usually priced in dollars, often receive a boost with a rate cut as a lower cost of borrowing can stimulate an economy and increase demand. "Interest rate cuts reduce the cost of borrowing in U.S. dollars, thereby creating easier liquidity conditions for companies around the world," Quilter Cheviot's Richard Carter continued via email. That includes whether the initial cut will reduce the Fed funds rate by 25 basis points or 50 basis points below its current 525 to 550 range.

And yet an unusual air of uncertainty overhangs this week's meeting: It’s unclear just how large the Fed’s rate cut will be. Wall Street traders and some economists foresee a growing likelihood that the central bank will announce a larger-than-usual half-point cut. Many analysts foresee a more typical quarter-point rate cut. This week's move is expected to be only the first in a series of Fed rate cuts that will extend into 2025. Over time, Fed rate cuts should lower borrowing costs for mortgages, auto loans and credit cards, as well as for business loans.

Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.

Concerns about iPhone 16 lead times could send Apple shares lower in the near term, according to Morgan Stanley. This has led to the stock underperforming by an average of five points in the three months following an iPhone launch. "What will matter most over the next 10 days is the trajectory of iPhone 16 lead times, as historically iPhone lead times elongate through the first in-store availability date (Friday, September 20th) before gradually trending lower in the weeks thereafter," the analyst wrote in a Wednesday note to clients. "Therefore, a more sustained elongation in iPhone 16 lead times from today should be viewed positively, while a sharp reversal in iPhone 16 lead times after Friday would likely indicate a greater risk of negative iPhone build revisions." With 48 analysts covering the stock, 36 of them have a strong buy or buy rating, while 11 are neutral.

On Monday, Putin ordered the army to increase its troops by 180,000, per a decree published by the Kremlin. This will raise the overall number of Russian military personnel to 2.38 million people, with 1.5 million of them being active soldiers. AdvertisementThe gear coming off the production line "will still be substantial," Reynolds told BI in an interview on Wednesday. Russia has "adapted much better than predicted to some of the pressures it's been put under," Reynolds told BI. Other experts BI spoke to said that while Putin might still be able to grow Russia's army, it may only add more strain to the already-stretched Russian labor force.

The market had become all but impenetrable after mortgage rates went from historic lows in 2020 to their highest levels in a generation last year. “And I think if we even go down to 5.9%, that would be really psychologically impactful to the housing market. The current 6.2% mortgage rate average is, of course, preferable to last year’s peak of 7.8% — a difference that could translate to hundreds of dollars in monthly payments. As my colleague Samantha Delouya wrote this week, a drop in mortgage rates could be a double-edged sword. “A further drop in mortgage rates could bring a surge of demand that makes it tougher to actually buy a house.”
