A long-exposure photo shows a trail left by SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket while launching the ViaSat-3 Americas satellite from Florida on April 30, 2023. Viasat shares rose on Thursday after the company said it expects to meet financial growth targets earlier than expected and that it won't need to replace a damaged $750 million communications satellite. Viasat expects to be free cash flow positive in the first half of 2025, earlier than the second half of 2025 it previously forecast. The company in July disclosed the malfunction with the recently launched Viasat-3 Americas satellite, also known as "ViaSat-3 F1," that occurred while deploying the reflector of the spacecraft's antenna. Together, the pair of Viasat insurance claims total $768 million, which industry executives previously expected would roil the specialty space insurance market.

He said he's liked management's capital allocation as it's continued to grow through acquisitions, and that the firm has fundamental tailwinds. Leverage and risk managementLike hedge funds do, Tomicki relies on leverage, or borrowed money that he then invests, to amplify his returns. He said for every $1 of investor capital he receives, he's long by $3 per stock, meaning returns are multiplied by three. To further lessen his overall portfolio risk, Tomicki said he runs the 200-plus stocks that satisfy his three selection criteria through a quantitative model. However, Goldman Sachs strategists recently said the seven stocks look cheap and could continue to surge.

Mr. Sowell, 93, is an economist who earned a doctorate from the University of Chicago, where his professors included Milton Friedman , Friedrich Hayek and other future Nobel laureates. His specialty is the history of ideas, and his most recent book, “Social Justice Fallacies,” harks back to his writings on social theory and intellectual history, which include “Knowledge and Decisions” (1980), “The Vision of the Anointed” (1996) and “The Quest for Cosmic Justice” (1999).

There's a staffing shortage in the accounting industry, and it's not too early to lock in a tax preparer for next season. "Buyer beware," said April Walker, lead manager for tax practice and ethics with the American Institute of CPAs. "Truly, anybody can call themselves a tax preparer." In her 2022 annual report to Congress, National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins highlighted the "absence of minimum competency standards for return preparers" as a top problem. When a preparer makes a mistake, the filer is ultimately responsible for their return and can face IRS enforcement action, she wrote.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's Supreme Court is expected to consider whether an Atlantic City casino can get payouts from business interruption insurance for losses during the COVID-19 outbreak, potentially providing guidance for policyholders nationwide regarding the scope of coverage for pandemic-related losses. Three insurers — AIG Specialty Insurance Co., American Guarantee & Liability Insurance Co. and Interstate Fire & Casualty Co. — largely denied coverage to the casino, saying it did not suffer direct physical loss or damage because of the virus. Last year, the Supreme Court agreed to resolve some questions regarding the case. United Policyholders, an advocacy group for insurance customers, urges the justices in a friend-of-the-court brief to rule in favor of the casino. “The ruling sought by the (insurers) here would curtail coverage for millions of New Jersey policyholders,” it wrote.

Welcome to the hot flashes and other symptoms of approaching menopause — an experience experts say about 75% of women will share if they live long enough. Intense hot flashes could indicate an increased risk of Alzheimer's and heart disease in the future, new research found. The women were also fitted with sweat monitors to record their hot flashes on one of those nights. Frequent moderate to severe hot flashes can often last seven to 10 years, on average, and less frequent or severe hot flashes can last even longer, according to experts. “A lot of people actually underreport their hot flashes, saying they’re not having many when they really are,” Faubion said.
