Leaky homes and buildings are some of the greatest climate offenders, but a Dayton, Ohio-based start-up is making big gains in shoring up the problem. Aeroseal, which seals both air ducts and building envelopes, is now available across America and in 29 countries. Leaky airducts and walls are the single largest reason for wasted energy in homes. Reducing that wasted energy not only lowers consumers' bills, but also reduces emissions associated with energy production, which are a significant contributor to climate change. Aeroseal has so far raised about $30 million in venture capital from the likes of Breakthrough Energy, Energy Impact Partners, Building Ventures and 2150.
In late 2021, a wildfire tore through the Boulder suburbs and destroyed nearly 1,100 homes. Roughly 10 months after that blaze, known as the Marshall Fire, the vast majority of the burned lots remain vacant. "Open space with the ability to build what you want — that really doesn't exist in Boulder County," Jennifer Eiss, a Boulder real-estate agent with Compass, said. The median sale price for Marshall Fire lots that sold in the third quarter was $416,000, according to MLS data. Newer, more-sustainable building methods, combined with an emphasis on protective borders around homes, could help mitigate fire risks, Pechet said.

The drag show at a Tennessee pride festival will go on Saturday — but not in the way organizers had planned it. Darin Hollingsworth, a Jackson Pride Committee member, said organizers were “horribly disappointed,” because they know local LGBTQ youths would have felt supported at the drag performance. “But we will be in contempt if we even allow parents to bring in their child, so we won’t.”Hollingsworth said the pride event had been in the works for a year, and Jackson Pride had advertised it repeatedly. The event began to face backlash after a Sept. 17 Facebook post from Republican state Rep. Chris Todd. As a result, the Jackson Pride Committee decided to move the festival, including the drag show, into the Civic Center and to increase security measures by, among other things, having a metal detector.
