LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - Companies around the globe took on a record $456 billion of net new debt in 2022/23, although higher interest rates should reduce appetite for new borrowing ahead, Janus Henderson said in a report published on Wednesday. The net new debt taken on in 2022/23 pushed outstanding net debt up by 6.2% on a constant-currency basis to $7.80 trillion, surpassing a previous peak in 2020/21, at the height of the COVID pandemic, Janus Henderson's annual corporate debt index showed. One fifth of the net-debt increase reflected companies such as Alphabet and Meta (META.O), which owns Facebook and Instagram, spending some of their "vast cash mountains", Janus Henderson said. Higher interest rates were also expected to dampen appetite for further corporate borrowing and Janus Henderson said it expected net debt to decline by 1.9% in 2023/2024, falling to $7.65 trillion on a constant-currency basis. "The increase in interest rates will feed through into the weaker cohort of credit quality much quicker than in investment grade (bonds)," Briggs said.

CNN —Although the so-called “girl dinner” is being popularized by young women promoting throw-together meals on TikTok, it’s in fact an inclusive meal. I’m a middle-aged girl, and this is the style of meal I’ve been calling “snack dinner” for years. The original “girl dinner” TikTok video, posted by Olivia Maher, featured a countertop spread of grapes, cornichons, bread and cheese. There are really no rules for preparing the perfect "girl dinner" — start with your favorite snack elements and expand from there. Your solo snack plate dinner doesn’t have to include bread, cheese or charcuterie if that’s not your personal preference.

Student loan payments are set to resume in October following a Supreme Court ruling last month. Analysts at Morgan Stanley project this will have a broad — but uneven — impact on major retailers. Retailers are already bracing for the shift, which analysts at Morgan Stanley project will affect nearly every company — some more than others. "Retailers with high exposure to student loan holders that sell into a discretionary category are likely most at risk, while retailers with low exposure to student loan holders are likely most insulated," the analysts note. In addition to Target, the analysis calls out Dick's Sporting Goods, Wayfair, and Williams-Sonoma as particularly vulnerable to this pullback in discretionary spending.

"There's no real consensus at the moment about the increase in interest rates among economic actors," Jeremie Delecourt, chief operating officer at French private equity fund Ardian, told Reuters. In the euro zone, the peak is near after a combined 4 percentage points rise in the past year, ECB policymaker and French central bank governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau said on a panel at the conference. But he also said that rates would be left high for as long as necessary to ensure that inflation is headed back to the European Central Bank's 2% target by 2025. The ECB raised interest rates to their highest level in 22 years last month and promised another hike this month, with possibly another in September. "I see quite a bit of optimism in the short term, but I see a lot of downside risks if there is a policy mistake, especially from the central banks," she added.

But it was the tart, earthy, tingly, subtly sweet notes provided by the sumac and Aleppo pepper that made such a lasting impression. Extra-virgin olive oil, yogurt and feta cheese are dietary mainstays, along with seasonal produce, legumes, whole grains and lean proteins. Made from deep-red Halaby chile peppers, Aleppo pepper is named for the Syrian city where it once grew in abundance. Dukkah, a blend of nuts, seeds and warm spices, makes a savory, crunchy topping on everything from soups to salads. Resetting student loans brings Econ 101 lessons

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling against President Joe Biden’s student loan forbearance erases as much as $20,000 in potential relief for graduates. Combined with the resumption of debt payments, borrowers will be feeling the pinch in their wallets and their confidence. The court said on Friday that a plan to wipe out swathes of student loans was unconstitutional, ending hopes of an easier financial future for some 43 million borrowers. If the Supreme Court had supported the relief, it also risked stoking inflation just as it slides to a healthier level. The proposal aimed to relieve $10,000 of student loans for individuals earning less than $125,000 annually, and an additional $10,000 for eligible borrowers who received Pell Grant subsidies.

Biden's plan would have eliminated her remaining student debt balance. KeyBanc's Thomas said the student loan payment pause was yet another pandemic tail wind for retailers. Estimates vary on how much student loan borrowers will pay each month. Kantrowitz said there is little data on how Americans used the money that they did not spend on student debt. He said the student loan changes are modest compared with the pinch that people feel from inflation or the dwindling of pandemic-strengthened savings accounts.
