CNN —The death toll from Helene has risen to at least 225 across six states, according to CNN’s tally, after seven more deaths were announced Saturday in North Carolina. CNN —The famed Blue Ridge Parkway – spanning more than 400 miles – remains closed with no reopening date, according to the National Park Service. “The entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia is closed as crews continue their assessment of the damage from Hurricane Helene,” NPS spokesman Mike Litterst told CNN. Tokyo CNN —Japanese toymaker MegaHouse has unveiled a miniature Rubik’s Cube — one so tiny that you might need a pair of tweezers to solve it. Each face of the cube, which is made from aluminum, measures about five millimeters (around 0.2 inches) across. “The 5-milimeter Rubik’s Cube is the result of the trinity of machines, cutting tools, and players’ passion,” said Kiyokazu Saito, president of Iriso Precision, the company brought in for the precision cutting, in a promotional video on the toymaker’s website. Facebook owner Meta announced on Friday it had built a new AI model called Movie Gen that can create realistic-seeming video and audio clips in response to user prompts, claiming it can rival tools from leading media generation startups like OpenAI and ElevenLabs. Movie Gen also can generate background music and sound effects synced to the content of the videos, Meta said in a blog post, and use the tool to edit existing videos. Videos created by Movie Gen can be up to 16 seconds long, while audio can be up to 45 seconds long, Meta said. They declined to comment on Meta's assessment for Movie Gen specifically. The film “Rust” will make its world premiere next month, three years after the set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and blanketed the production in scandal and legal troubles. The Western drama starring and produced by Alec Baldwin will make its world premiere at the Camerimage Festival which takes place Nov. 16 to 23 in Toruń, Poland. Production was halted as Baldwin and the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, became the subject of legal action. KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A weakened and “weird” Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, hitting the island with a storm that has killed two people so far and forced it to shut down for a second day with hundreds of flights grounded and financial markets closed. Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. All domestic flights were canceled for a second day, as well as 236 international ones. Typhoons often hit Taiwan’s east coast facing the Pacific, but Krathon is unusual in that it directly hit the west coast. Local media labeled it a “weird” storm for that reason, and because of how it hovered off the coast before reaching land.

Voting in Katmai National Park's famed Fat Bear Week was underway Wednesday after a bear killed one of this year's competitors and delayed the bracket reveal by a day. Voting takes place over the course of seven days, culminating in Fat Bear Tuesday, when one bear is crowned the fattest of the season. The winner will then try to beat Bear #128, also known as Grazer, a mother bear who holds last year's Fat Bear title. The injured cub later died and the surviving cub competed in Fat Bear Junior 2024, according to the park service. In another round one face-off, Bear #903, a smaller male and another Fat Bear Week newbie, will meet Bear #909, the mother of the junior contest's winner.
