People who believe they have a higher income than their peers are more likely to socialize. AdvertisementPeople who think they have a higher income than their peers are more likely to socialize with them, contributing to greater happiness, new research found. A February NBER working paper found that those with higher perceived relative income increased their time spent with peers. Despite some uncertainty, some evidence suggests those with a higher relative income become more engaged in sports and community events. Changes in spending following from changes in perceived relative income could also drive changes in happiness."

Meet the Artist Delighting Amsterdam
  + stars: | 2024-03-01 | by ( Noëlle De Leeuw | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
In the spring of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the always bustling Dam Square in Amsterdam was deserted, silent and surrounded by concrete counterterrorism blocks. The Dutch street artist Frank de Ruwe, who goes by the name of Frankey, decided these daunting studded blocks resembled something more innocent — giant Lego blocks — and that the city needed something to lighten the gloom. The result? Later that summer, Frankey created and placed a giant yellow-and-black Lego figure of the Dutch folk singer André Hazes, whose songs have been pub favorites in the Netherlands for more than 40 years.

A North Korean spy satellite was spotted adjusting its orbit in space, experts said. AdvertisementA North Korean spy satellite has made maneuvers in orbit that show it is very much "alive," contrary to previous assessments that suggested it was inactive, experts said on Tuesday. North Korea announced it had launched Malligyong-1 into orbit in November, after two failed attempts. The launches drew condemnation from the US, which viewed them as cover for North Korea testing missile technology. The latest findings come as South Korea warned that Pyongyang could launch a new spy satellite as soon as March, The Korea Times reported.

Picking great stocks and avoiding disastrous investments enabled the Ranmore Global Equity Fund to beat the S & P 500 over the past two years, according to its fund manager. The fund, run by portfolio manager Sean Peche, returned 31% in 2023 compared to 24% for the S & P 500 . The Ranmore fund also outperformed its benchmark with 1.8% total returns in 2022 when the S & P 500 and broader indexes nearly fell into a bear market. The fund manager says they take a probability-based approach with many small positions rather than a few big bets. However, according to the fund manager, the market appears to be undervaluing its cash and securities.

Biden and Trump win Michigan primaries

CNN —President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won their respective parties’ primaries in Michigan on Tuesday. “We demand President Biden to take action now – bring a permanent ceasefire,” said Layla Elabed, the campaign manager for the group. The Michigan primary was moved up near the front of the Democratic presidential nominating calendar this year. Biden defeated Trump in Michigan by about 150,000 votes four years later. After Democrats, who control the state Legislature and the governor’s office, moved the Michigan primary to February 27 despite the Republican opposition, the RNC and Michigan GOP came up with the hybrid model.

The party adopted a novel and somewhat confusing hybrid nominating system this year, which will culminate on March 2 with a statewide nominating convention. Here’s what to know:When are the Michigan primary and convention, and how do I vote? Additionally, the state’s Republican Party will host a nominating convention on March 2. At the Republican nominating convention, only delegates, a group of elected party loyalists, can participate in the caucus-style event. London CNN —The Magnificent 7 tech stocks have been a big part of the extraordinary US market rally. But there’s a rival group of companies powering European stocks to new heights with even better returns, by some measures. Dubbed the “Granolas,” those 11 companies accounted for 60% of the gains on Europe’s benchmark stock index over the past 12 months. They have even slightly outperformed the Magnificent 7 over a longer period, according to Goldman Sachs. Their standout performance has “raised the issue of concentration effects” in the region’s stock market, says Philip Lawlor, managing director of markets research at Wilshire Indexes.

“Joe Biden is losing about 20 percent of the Democratic vote today, and many say it’s a sign of his weakness in November. Phillips’ high point was in New Hampshire, where he drew nearly 20% of the Democratic primary vote. Republicans opposed an earlier Michigan primary, which violated Republican National Committee rules limiting which states can hold contests before March 1. After Democrats, who control the legislature and the governor’s office, moved the Michigan primary to February 27 despite the Republican opposition, the RNC and the Michigan GOP came up with the hybrid model. However, Kristina Karamo, the election conspiracy theorist who the state party voted to oust in January, has refused to relinquish control, arguing that she was unlawfully removed.

European leaders were set to gather in Paris on Monday in an attempt to showcase unity and resolve in their support for Ukraine as the embattled country confronts a dire situation on the battlefield against Russia and in Washington, where Republicans in Congress are blocking badly needed financial aid. The meeting, convened by President Emmanuel Macron of France, is scheduled to include about 20 or so heads of state and top officials, including from Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is to attend the evening meeting by videoconference. “We are at a critical moment,” Mr. Macron said on Saturday during a visit to a major agricultural fair in Paris, adding that the meeting would “bolster our position” and give Ukraine more “visibility” for the coming months. “Russia cannot win in Ukraine,” he added.

Houthi militants have launched attack drones and cruise and ballistic missiles at vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The United States and Britain carried out another round of large-scale military strikes Saturday against multiple sites in Yemen controlled by Houthi militants, U.S. officials said. On Monday, Houthi militants fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles at a cargo ship, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. The ship, called the Sea Champion, continued on to its destination at the port of Aden in Yemen, the statement added. The American-led retaliatory air and naval strikes against Houthi targets began last month.

Defense officials tell CNBC as of February 21, there have been at least 59 attacks on commercial shipping interests in the Red Sea. But the EU said the Red Sea moves reflect the need for a stronger European presence in protecting ships from Houthi attacks. The U.S. F/A-18 fighter jets launched from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier, which is currently in the Red Sea, officials said. President Joe Biden and other senior leaders have repeatedly warned that the U.S. won't tolerate the Houthi attacks against commercial shipping. During normal operations, about 400 commercial vessels transit the southern Red Sea at any given time. The Rubymar, a British-registered, Lebanese-operated cargo vessel, was attacked while sailing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Associated Press, relying on satellite images from Planet Labs PBC of the stricken vessel, reported Tuesday that the vessel was leaking oil in the Red Sea.
