WASHINGTON — To hear Republican nominee Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance tell it, he wasn’t trying to eliminate the Affordable Care Act as president. “Obamacare was lousy health care. Vance added: “It illustrates Donald Trump’s entire approach to governing, which is to fix problems.”Both Trump and Vance are misrepresenting the facts. As president, Trump fought to repeal and undo the ACA using executive action, legislation and lawsuits. “Which means no actual plan.”“And 45 million Americans are insured through the Affordable Care Act,” she said.

President Joe Biden’s administration is widely considered to be the most pro-LGBTQ in history, and as he enters his final months in the White House, Biden sat for an historic interview with one of the country’s oldest LGBTQ news outlets. In a wide-ranging interview published Monday in the Washington Blade, a D.C.-based LGBTQ newspaper founded more than half a century ago, Biden reiterated his commitment to the community while also speaking broadly about former President Donald Trump’s policies regarding the LGBTQ community and sharing his views on Project 2025. The interview is the first time a sitting president has spoken exclusively with an LGBTQ newspaper, according to the Blade. They noted that Biden has also appointed more LGBTQ officials to his administration than in any other administration in American history. Despite such advances for the community, Biden also spoke about the challenges all Americans face.

Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals sounded unconvinced Monday that the TikTok “sale or ban” law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, was unconstitutional. TikTok and ByteDance have since condemned the practice and said that three employees involved were terminated, with an additional employee resigning. Pincus also said that the data TikTok collects from American users is anonymized and is comparable to other Chinese companies, like major e-commerce platforms. TikTok creators and users in the U.S. have responded overwhelmingly negatively to the proposed ban. Trump then expressed support for TikTok following Biden’s passage of the national security package that included the provision to ban TikTok.

New York officials released Monday forensic sketches and informational flyers about a possible new victim in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, in an effort to identify them and get new leads in the roughly 20-year-old homicide. The remains of the victim, referred to as “Asian Doe,” were found in 2011 near the bodies of at least 10 others near Long Island, New York’s Gilgo Beach. Long Island architect Rex Heuermann, 61, was arrested last year in connection with the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Heuermann was initially charged with killing three women — Megan Waterman, Amber Costello and Melissa Barthelemy — and dumping their bodies near Gilgo Beach. Authorities previously disclosed that “Asian Doe” was wearing women’s clothing, but did not provide further details.

Amazon is requiring its workers to return to the office full time. He noted that the company's three-day-a-week policy, instituted in 2023, had only reinforced the view that a full return was necessary. Amazon joins a growing list of major U.S. firms returning to a five-days-a-week office policy, including Boeing, JP Morgan Chase and UPS. However, according to data from FlexIndex, a firm that tracks company office policies, a majority of U.S. firms still offer hybrid arrangements. "As we have grown our teams as quickly and substantially as we have the last many years, we have understandably added a lot of managers," Jassy said.

The Miami Heat on Monday blasted "hateful speech" aimed at Haitian immigrants, who have been targeted by baseless claims they're stealing and eating pets in Ohio. "The false narrative surrounding them is hurtful and offensive and has sadly made innocent people targets of hateful speech and physical threats," the team said in a statement on Monday. Several schools and municipal buildings were closed in Springfield last week after threats were called in to the Ohio community. The threats unfolded in the wake of wild and completely baseless claims of Haitian immigrants stealing and eating pets. Those lies have gained strength in the past week, with Tump and Vance spreading the fringe, far-right tales.

Elon Musk said his now-deleted X post about how “no one is even trying to assassinate” Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden was intended to be a joke. The tech billionaire’s comment came after what the FBI is investigating as an “apparent assassination” attempt on former President Donald Trump on Sunday. Musk, who owns X, had posted a response to a user who had asked, “Why they want to kill Donald Trump?” Musk, who took over X — then Twitter — in October 2022, has been known to elevate debunked conspiracy theories on the platform. Musk on Monday also responded to a post from Donald Trump Jr. on X about the former president. “The incitement to hatred and violence against President Trump by the media and leading Democrats needs to stop” Musk wrote.

The man arrested in connection to an apparent attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump appeared to follow law enforcement directions and was taken into custody without incident, footage of the confrontation released on Monday showed. Driver go straight back, keep walking," a law enforcement agent wearing what appeared to be a protective "SHERRIF" vest said. Two law enforcement agents then grabbed his hands and handcuffed the man, the video showed. A witness who spotted Routh and his car was crucial to helping law enforcement find the suspect quickly, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said. KYIV, Ukraine — The shots fired by the Secret Service near former President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course Sunday are ringing out 5,000 miles away — in the Russia-Ukraine war. After what officials called the second assassination attempt on Trump in three months, a man named Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was taken into custody and charged. Routh had already been extensively profiled in the Western media as an ardent supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s ongoing invasion. Ukraine sought Monday to distance itself from Routh, with the country’s international legion — the military unit that includes foreign volunteers — saying it had nothing to do with him. “We would like to clarify that Ryan Wesley Routh has never been part of, associated with, or linked to the International Legion in any capacity.

The latest research looked at a part of the brain called the olfactory bulb, which processes information about smell. Connecting the olfactory bulb and the nasal cavity is the olfactory nerve. Some researchers worry the olfactory pathway may also be an entry point for microplastics getting into the brain, beyond the olfactory bulb. Mauad and her team took samples of olfactory bulb tissue from 15 cadavers of people who died between the ages of 33 and 100. The presence of microplastics in the olfactory bulb doesn’t automatically mean there are microplastics elsewhere in the brain, such as regions related to cognition.

The 2-month-old female pygmy hippo has become an internet star. Other videos of Moo Deng on the TikTok account also have millions of views. Pygmy hippos have been classified as an endangered species, with their numbers dwindling from poaching and just 2,000 of them believed to be alive in the wild, according to the Pygmy Hippo Foundation. The Titan submersible plunged thousands of feet down the forbidding depths of the North Atlantic Ocean in search of the Titanic wreck site when it imploded, killing all five on board. OceanGate came under heavy scrutiny as a result of the disaster — an almost unheard-of occurrence in the submersible industry. But after the Titan didn’t return at its scheduled time, the Polar Prince contacted the Coast Guard. The suit remains ongoing, and a former OceanGate engineering director, Tony Nissen, named as a defendant, is expected to appear Monday at the Coast Guard hearing. “The Titan submersible did not just go down with its inventor — it went down with paying passengers.”

In Jesenik, a Czech town across the border that was inundated on Sunday, a clean-up was starting after waters receded to show damaged cars and debris on the streets. Flooded parts of the northeastern Czech city of Ostrava forced the closures of a power plant supplying heat and hot water to the city as well as two chemical plants. Is TikTok trying to secretly influence Americans at the behest of the Chinese government? And an analysis of the ownership structure of TikTok parent company ByteDance, obtained by NBC News, argues that the company is deeply entangled with some of China’s major government propaganda organs. The most recent one, published last month, found that TikTok suppresses anti-China content compared to YouTube and other social media platforms. In recent years, according to media reports, Chinese government entities have increasingly taken golden shares in technology companies. “This report establishes that TikTok algorithms actively suppress content critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) while simultaneously boosting pro-China propaganda and promoting distracting, irrelevant content,” the researchers wrote.

WASHINGTON — Divided House Republicans stumbled last week in their effort to pass Speaker Mike Johnson’s bill to fund the government. “A government shutdown is always a bad idea, at any time,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters. The speaker’s initial strategy had called for a six-month continuing resolution (CR) tied to the SAVE Act, legislation backed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump requiring proof of citizenship to vote. It’s unclear whether Johnson this week will try to tweak the SAVE Act approach or try something entirely different. Republicans see the SAVE Act as a mechanism to try to force politically vulnerable Democrats into a difficult position.

A new report commissioned by a labor-backed group is examining a problem many Democrats might rather ignore: the exodus of working-class voters from the party they used to call home. Some voices on the left have downplayed the significance or even denied the loss of working class voters, but the data is increasingly clear and signs of realignment are everywhere. “We take the right wing and Republican Party seriously when they say they want to be the party of the working class,” Mitchell said. Too often, the report argues, working-class voters are thought of as white men without college degrees, likely involved in a trade like plumbing. If nothing else, Mitchell hopes the research will push Democrats to take seriously the erosion with working class voters and to move beyond one-size-fits all stereotypes when thinking about how to talk to working-class voters.
