CNN —Private colleges and universities in Florida must now comply with a rule requiring students and faculty to use bathroom and changing facilities aligned with their sex assigned at birth. LGBTQ advocates have slammed the statutes as an effort to erase them from Florida schools and society. “Right now, in the public schools at least, the unisex restroom is the teacher’s restroom. So we have a situation whereby all the nonbinary and transgender (people) and the teachers all line up for this unisex bathroom. ATLANTA (AP) — The state of Georgia will start paying for gender-affirming health care for state employees, public school teachers and former employees covered by a state health insurance plan, settling another in a string of lawsuits against Georgia agencies aiming to force them to pay for gender-confirmation surgery and other procedures. The December lawsuit argued the insurance plan illegally discriminated by refusing to pay for gender-affirming care. But Brown said Thursday's settlement requires the health plan to pay for care deemed medically necessary for spouses and dependents as well as employees. That means the health plan could be required to pay for care for minors outside the state even though it's prohibited in Georgia. “The plan can’t treat the care any differently from other care that’s not available in the state,” Brown said.

Facebook parent company Meta and Chinese-owned social media app TikTok have both been given a deadline of Oct. 25 by the European Commission to share information on their response to the Israel-Hamas war, which has seen misinformation in the digital sphere spread alongside the physical conflict. The European Commission on Thursday said it is making both requests under the Digital Services Act. A TikTok spokesperson told CNBC the firm had "just heard from the European Commission this morning and our team is currently reviewing the RFI [request for information]." The EU wants to see how Meta and TikTok have looked to keep misinformation about the war off their platforms. Meta and TikTok both have until Oct. 25 to share information related to their response to the crisis in Israel, the commission said.

United Airlines says that it will start boarding passengers in economy class with window seats first starting next week, a move that will speed up boarding times for flights. The plan, known as WILMA, for window, middle and aisle, was tested at four domestic locations and one hub. (AP) — Florida's Republican attorney general will oppose a proposed amendment protecting the right to an abortion if it makes next year's ballot, she told the state Supreme Court when she advised justices Monday that a petition has reached enough signatures to trigger a language review. Attorney General Ashley Moody notified the court of its responsibility and said she will eventually argue the language isn't valid, though she didn't explain why. DeSantis approved last year banning abortion after 15 weeks is being challenged in court. DeSantis, who is running for president, has said he would support a federal abortion ban after 15 weeks. If the amendment makes the ballot and is approved by at least 60% of votes cast, it would protect the right to an abortion up to the point the fetus can survive outside the womb.

Utah is the latest state to file suit against TikTok, alleging the social media site misled its citizens about its relationship to its Chinese parent company and deceptively touted its platform as safe. TikTok has already faced similar lawsuits from Arkansas and Indiana, while Montana has chosen to ban the app altogether, a move that TikTok and creators have challenged. "Social media companies must be held responsible for the harms they are causing," Cox said in a statement. The other elements of the suit touch on concerns that many people have about social media platforms in general, not just TikTok. Utah has been particularly active in seeking to protect its citizens from what it sees as the harmful effects of social media.
