Options volumes and prices have skyrocketed since, but they're not betting the stock will do the same. Some options traders believe that the already hard hit stock could fall further. One of the most active single-stock options so far this week are those of Datadog (DDOG) , which reported earnings on Tuesday. A put seller is willing to get long the underlying stock at the strike price should it fall below that level by expiration. Options premiums in DDOG were high going into earnings, but not high enough as the sharp move higher illustrated.

The US was widely expected to transfer ATACMS missiles to Ukraine sometime this fall. But the Russians still appeared surprised when Ukraine fired ATACMS at air bases in October. Repeated failures to anticipate the arrival of new weapons has cost Russia heavily during the war. This has put the burden of air support on Russian attack helicopters. Maxar Technologies via Getty ImagesTo Kofman and other observers, those helicopter bases were "one of the most obvious targets" for Ukrainian ATACMS strikes.

Iran-backed groups have launched dozens of attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria since October 17. Middle East security experts say there are a number of reasons why the US is holding its fire. Attacks on US forces by Iran-backed groups in the region are not a new phenomenon. The Pentagon has only publicly confirmed a single incident of retaliation against the Iran-backed militias. Right now, US officials stress that deterrence — signaled by the massive movement of American combat power into the region — is working, and the Iran-backed attacks on American forces have been unsuccessful.

India's export ban on rice is reverberating through global rice markets, threatening food security if developing nations cannot afford or access rice. India's rice exports make up 40% of the market, so any export bans quickly influence global prices. U.S. rice farmers face the same volatile rice prices. "Our farmers, they'll go up against any rice farmer," Michael Klein, vice president of communications and domestic promotion at USA Rice, told CNBC. When U.S. rice farms struggled to stay profitable as global rice prices mismatched with rising input costs, Congress passed $250 million in supplemental funding.

We'll touch on Berkshire Hathaway's weekend report, review some interesting companies reporting in the week ahead and then analyze a curious call spread in Disney ahead of earnings. Our thinking, and the options sentiment suggested, that earnings might be the catalyst for a turnaround. It seems at least one institutional options trader thinks that earnings might be the catalyst for an upside move in the name. With Disney trading around $85 a share, apparently someone is willing to bet a small percentage of the current stock price that the stock could pop well over 10% post-earnings — something that hasn't happened since their August 2022 earnings release. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

Some scientists have forecast that, with rising seas, a big chunk of Hoboken will be Atlantis by 2100. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy left Hoboken underwater and without electricity for days, causing more than $110 million worth of property damage. Across the river, the same storm drowned several of New York City’s subway lines and forced Brooklyn residents to wade through thigh-deep water. Television crews, returning to Hoboken early Saturday to film the usual aftermath, left empty-handed.

Jane Garrett, who as an editor at the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house guided seven books to Pulitzer Prizes for history but watched another book lose its prestigious Bancroft Prize over scholars’ criticism of the author’s research, died on Oct. 12 at her home in Middlebury, Vt. She was 88. Ms. Garrett worked at Knopf for 44 years, initially as an editor and special assistant to Alfred Knopf himself, who had a strong devotion to publishing history books. At first she steered his projects to completion, but she soon began acquiring books on her own. In 1973, “People of Paradox: An Inquiry Concerning the History of American Civilization,” by Michael Kammen, became the first of the books edited by Ms. Garrett to win a Pulitzer. Ms. Garrett was at a book party in Boston when she met Alan Taylor, who was starting to work on a book about William Cooper, the founder of Cooperstown, N.Y., and the father of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper.

These distinct designer brands all have something in common: a single parent company named Tapestry, Inc. That parent company has been getting bigger and bigger throughout 2023. "Growth-oriented acquisitions really help to drive the business further, " said Dana Telsey, CEO of Telsey Advisory Group. "New designers can create interest because you can extend your customer base, whether it's extending your customer base older or younger, or extend your customer base globally." The popularity of online shopping has also provoked retailers to pursue mergers that promote expansion online and in stores. As social media creates new avenues for promotion, brands grappling with the high cost of celebrity endorsements are looking to expand their resources through mergers and acquisitions.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

A jury found Tuesday that real-estate agents and brokerages kept their commissions artifically high. The verdict, she added, is "a wake-up call for real-estate agents." The seller might no longer pay out both agents' commissions after the sale closes. Currently, home sellers often list their properties for higher sums because they expect to pay broker fees. AdvertisementAdvertisement"NAR and corporate real-estate companies have had a stranglehold on real-estate commissions for too long," the plaintiffs' lawyer, Michael Ketchmark, said outside the courtroom Tuesday, according to the Journal.

Merger Arbitrage hedge funds gained 4.4% in the third quarter, standing out as the best-performing strategy for the period, beating every category in event-driven, equity, macro and value funds, according to Hedge Fund Research . "The merger arbitrage strategy has historically thrived in a rising interest rate environment when an investor's fixed income portfolio may have suffered losses," said Michael Peck, co-chief investment officer at First Trust. As the proposed deal nears completion, the target's stock typically rises and the acquirer's shares fall. This short-term trading strategy often utilized by fast-money hedge funds typically involves multiple long and short positions, and might be too sophisticated for the average individual investor. The First Trust Merger Arbitrage ETF (MARB) and the IQ Merger Arbitrage ETF (MNA) are two popular ones that capitalize on the technique.

New York CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Exxon, already America’s biggest oil company, reached a deal in October to buy rival Pioneer Natural Resources for $60 billion. In the letter, the Senate Democrats argue past mergers that helped create Exxon and Chevron “enabled anticompetitive coordination” that hurt consumers by limiting supply of oil. “The oil-and-gas industry is still dominated by a handful of corporate giants, led by the top-two players Exxon and Chevron. Apple’s Dark Cloud Might Linger

Apple stopped giving actual financial forecasts early in the pandemic and has yet to resume, though it typically offers some qualitative comments about the ongoing quarter. Photo: Michael Kuenne/Zuma PressWinter has come early for Apple , and it might last a while. The world’s largest company by market value has become worth considerably less over the past three months. Apple’s share price has slid 11% since the company reported its fiscal third-quarter results on Aug. 3, erasing nearly $400 billion in market value. It is hardly a typical swing given the fact that the company has long used the fall season to launch its biggest products for every year, including new iPhones.

The verdict by a federal jury in Kansas City, Missouri, could upend decades-old practices that have allowed real estate agents to boost commissions as home prices and mortgage rates rise, hurting consumers by making housing transactions more expensive. Plaintiffs in the class action included sellers of more than 260,000 homes in Missouri, Kansas and Illinois between 2015 and 2022, who objected to the commissions they were obligated to pay buyers' brokers. The verdict followed a two-week trial, and the damages award can be tripled under U.S. antitrust law to more than $5.3 billion. Shares of real estate brokerages not involved in the verdict closed lower. Re/Max fell 4.4% and Anywhere fell 2.7%, while online brokers Zillow Group (ZG.O) and Redfin (RDFN.O) declined 6.9% and 5.7%, respectively.

Murphy said Orsted was facing the same supply chain, inflation and other challenges that competitors in the offshore wind industry face. The decision was the latest in a series of setbacks for the offshore wind industry in the northeast. A handful of other offshore wind projects have been canceled. And New Jersey still has several other offshore wind projects in various stages of development, with four new proposals submitted in August alone. A spokesperson for the National Association of Realtors, Mantill Williams, also said it would appeal and ask the court to reduce the damages amount. The plaintiffs claimed the association and corporate defendants drove up the commission, upwards of 6%, that home sellers pay to brokers representing buyers.
