Adventurous projectAlan Andrew and Vincent Proost purchased a rundown Portuguese farmhouse in 2019. have a completely new life in Portugal, and say they couldn't be happier. Although they describe Casa Baio as a “modern farmhouse,” they say they’ve tried to incorporate as many traditional local materials, including handmade terracotta tiles, along with floor tiles made from local marble, as possible. Andrew and Proost say they try to use regenerative organic practices on the farm, which is certified organic. Andrew and Proost say they’ve definitely noticed an increase in the amount of people from the US relocating to Portugal, particularly in Alentejo.

The Conservative Party lost to the resurgent Labour Party in Selby and Ainsty, a region in the north of England where the Sunak’s party had enjoyed a commanding majority. But the results indicate that the opposition Labour Party, which under the leadership of Keir Starmer is on course to clinch power when Sunak calls a general election. But in Selby, in the north of England, Labour overturned a huge deficit to win the seat with 46% of the votes, according to PA. The results amount to a significant rejection of Sunak’s Conservative Party, which has been in power for 13 years and has seen its opinion poll ratings nosedive towards the end of Johnson’s tenure, and since. Sunak will now look to steady his leadership and fight off any growing murmurs of a challenge within his party.

But Coleman is one of nearly two dozen parents who told CNN that they are grappling with a different but related issue: teens using social media to diagnose themselves with mental health conditions. Some parents said social media has helped their teens get mental health information they’ve needed and has helped them feel less alone. According to Hamlet, social media companies should tweak algorithms to better detect when users are consuming too much content about a specific topic. Meanwhile, Mary Spadaro Daikos from upstate New York feels mixed about her daughter using social media for reasons related to her autism diagnosis. “She’s doing a lot of self-discovery right now in so many areas, and social media is a big part of that,” she said.

Analysts said discussions over the soldier's fate could see some of the first diplomatic engagement between North Korea and the United States in years. "I do not think North Korea views the latest incident as strong leverage or an opportunity to engage the U.S.," she said. "North Korea knows that the U.S. government is unlikely to change its North Korea policy or its commitment to U.S. extended deterrence because of one U.S. soldier who reportedly faced disciplinary action and wilfully crossed into North Korea." "Their conditions are better not only than the average North Korean prisoner, but of the average North Korean citizen." NO CANCELLATIONS YETDemand for travel has soared again this summer as tourists leave behind years of pandemic restrictions, and travel companies say the heat hasn't caused many cancellations - yet. Stories of tourists being airlifted off Italian beaches or ferried away in ambulances from Athens' Acropolis have flooded European media in recent weeks. Italy's Environment Ministry warned in a report this year that foreign tourists would in future travel more in the spring and autumn and choose cooler destinations. Greek authorities closed Athens' ancient Acropolis during the hottest part of the day on Friday to protect tourists. In Spain, high vacation demand is expected in coastal destinations in the north of the country and on Spanish tourist islands, where summer temperatures tend to be cooler, according to a report from national tourism association Exceltur.

China's top economic state planner vowed Tuesday to "restore and expand" consumption in a wide-ranging plan to bolster growth in the world's second-largest economyChina's top economic state planner vowed Tuesday to "restore and expand" consumption in a wide-ranging plan to bolster growth that includes boosting household income, improving business environment for private firms and stabilizing youth employment. "Consumer purchasing power and expectations are relatively weak, while consumption infrastructure and environment need to be improved," Jin added. On Monday, a raft of weaker-than-expected economic data provided more basis for market watchers to renew calls for policy support to bolster growth. "We will promptly formulate and introduce policies to restore and expand consumption, and issue policies to stabilize large scale consumption, promote the consumption of automobile and electronic products, expand rural consumption, and optimize the consumption environment" Jin added. Within hours, Commerce Ministry followed with an announcement of an 11-point plan to boost the domestic consumption of household consumer goods and services.

When Boris Johnson paid a surprise visit last year to the Swallow pub and poured some pints, he seemed to leave the clientele more agreed on his skills as a barman than as a politician. “He asked me whether it was a decent pint — and it was,” said Tony O’Shea, 55, holding up a photo on his phone of the moment he was served a beer by Mr. Johnson, then the prime minister. Still a fan, Mr. O’Shea described Mr. Johnson as a “lovable rogue” whom he had voted for in 2019. On the other side of the pub, however, Jenny Moffatt, 73, had no complaints about the drinks she was served by Mr. Johnson. But she described him as “a buffoon,” with a tendency to “pontificate.”Love him or laugh at him, Mr. Johnson was an outsize presence both in British politics — and here in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, the district of outer London that he represented in Parliament.

Leland also takes on questions about being blind that many of us might never ask, or might not know whom to ask. Do blind guys want to know if the woman they’re speaking to is pretty? He made the decision after a blind woman told him that he should learn now, rather than when his sight was gone for good, an experience that for many can be an emotional tornado. The writing process, he said, kept him going despite his declining vision and accompanying worries about the future. But given the fact that he was writing about blindness, “losing vision almost felt productive.

China’s economy is flashing many warning signs. Weak spending is pushing China close to a dangerous trend known as deflation: Consumer prices are flat, and wholesale prices paid by companies are actually falling. “It’s not a strong recovery; the economy is quite weak,” said Wang Dan, the chief economist at Hang Seng Bank China. Some companies are also moving supply chains out of China, which will have a longer-lasting effect on exports, Mr. Fattal said. But a huge accumulation of debt, particularly at the level of local governments, has made that hard to do.

Kennedy's campaign refunded the donation, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission on Friday. They could also be the struggling theater industry's last chance to make money this summer. Struggling movie theaters might see "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" – which both come out July 21 – as their last chance to make money this summer. Forecasters think "Barbie" will be the highest-grossing film in the US this summer with earnings between $215 million and $319 million, the data shows. Sandwiching the two movies on Box Office Pro's leaderboard is Tom Cruise's latest "Mission Impossible" flick. BASF cuts 2023 earnings guidance on weak industrial demand

FRANKFURT, July 12 (Reuters) - German chemicals giant BASF (BASFn.DE) on Wednesday cut its full-year earnings guidance, the latest in a string of chemical companies caught out by weak demand from industrial clients and higher interest rates. In an unscheduled statement, BASF said earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) and adjusted for special items would be 4.0 billion euros to 4.4 billion euros ($4.90 billion) in 2023It had previously projected adjusted EBIT of 4.8 billion euros to 5.4 billion euros for the year, down from 6.9 billion in 2022. "Global chemical production declined perceptibly in the first half of 2023," BASF said in a statement, putting this down to slowing growth in industrial output. Chemical industry peers such as Croda (CRDA.L), Lanxess (LXSG.DE) , Victrex (VCTX.L) , Clariant (CLN.S) and Evonik (EVKn.DE) have recently cut their guidance, prompting several analysts to predict that BASF would be next. Second-quarter adjusted EBIT dropped 57% to 1.01 billion euros, down from 2.34 billion a year ago.

Salesforce to raise prices of some cloud products from August
  + stars: | 2023-07-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
July 11 (Reuters) - Salesforce (CRM.N) will raise prices for some of its cloud and marketing tools by an average 9% from August, the maker of software for customer relations management said, sending its shares up nearly 4% in early trading on Tuesday. Its first price hike in seven years comes at a time when Salesforce and several other technology companies are increasing their spending to include generative artificial intelligence (AI) to their products and services. The price hike also comes as revenues from cloud services that grew at a scorching pace during the pandemic lockdown have started to slow. Growth at big cloud players such as Microsoft (MSFT.O), Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and Alphabet (GOOGL.O) has come under pressure as enterprise clients look to optimize their cloud spending amid rising cost of borrowing. The new prices for Tableau, Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud and Industries will cover new and existing customers, Salesforce said.

It has been a brutal three years for China’s young adults. Draconian coronavirus restrictions are over, but not the sense of uncertainty about the future they created. For many people, the recent turmoil is another reason to postpone major life decisions — contributing to a record-low marriage rate and complicating the government’s efforts to stave off a demographic crisis. Grace Zhang, a tech worker who had long been ambivalent about marriage, spent two months barricaded in the government lockdown of Shanghai last year. When China reopened in December, Ms. Zhang, 31, left Shanghai to work remotely, traveling from city to city in hopes that a change of scene would restore her positive outlook.

MSCI's broad Asia ex-Japan index shed 1.5% last week, its third consecutive week without rising, and is flat for the year. Much of that is due to the sluggishness of China's markets, and key indicators from the region's largest economy on Monday will get the trading week underway. Annual producer price inflation, already the most negative since 2016, is seen falling to -5.0% from -4.6% in May. Chinese banking stocks, measured by the Hong Kong-listed Hang Seng Mainland Banks Index (.HSMBI), plunged 10.5% last week.
