REUTERS/Nicoco Chan/File PhotoSHENZHEN, China, Aug 11 (Reuters) - China's Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) saw modest revenue growth in the first half of the year, with its core information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and consumer businesses generating the lion's share. Revenues rose to 310.9 billion yuan ($43.01 billion), up 3.1% on the same period a year earlier, the Shenzhen-based technology giant announced on Friday. Huawei's profit margin rose to 15%, with a net profit of 46.6 billion yuan, making, according to Reuters calculations, around a threefold improvement on a year earlier. Mushrooms are flourishing in the Abu Dhabi desert

Now, a startup in Abu Dhabi has found a way to grow them in the middle of the desert. Below Farm is producing “specialty mushrooms” such as oyster, king oyster, shiitake and lion’s mane. Managing director Bronte Weir says the indoor farm, about 45 minutes’ drive from downtown Abu Dhabi, is the first in the region to grow and sell high-end mushrooms. He now orders 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of oyster mushrooms a week from the company. Neighborhood pizzeria Marmellata uses Below Farm's produce on one of its most popular dishes: the kale and mushroom pizza.

Martha Stewart was famously accused of insider trading in the early 2000s, but she didn't face criminal insider trading charges. "It is incredibly difficult to prove an insider trading case," said Daniel Taylor, a forensic accounting professor at the University of Pennsylvania. "Insider trading is judge-made law," said John Reed Stark, former head of the Office of Internet Enforcement at the Securities Exchange Commission. The SEC adopted an amendment to a rule that will "enhance investor protections against insider trading." The Department of Justice prosecuted the first insider trading case exclusively based on the rule in March 2023.

China's increased appetite for thermal coal from Australia and Russia has led to a shift in imports by India, the world's second biggest coal buyer. From December to February India's imports of Australian thermal coal had been above 1 million metric tons per month, peaking in January at 1.79 million. In contrast India is turning back to thermal coal from Indonesia, with July arrivals of 6.87 million metric tons, up from 6.04 million in June. For July, Indonesia's share of India's thermal coal imports was 63%, which was the highest since the 65% in April. China and India both generally import Australian thermal coal of a lower energy value than the traditional buyers of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

But further scrutiny revealed distinctive features: legs slightly longer than those of most domestic cats, and a striking black-tipped tail. I explored this question in my book "The Cat's Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa." But tomb paintings and sculptures show that by 3,500 years ago, domestic cats lived in Egypt. Or you can measure the length of its intestines – longer in domestic cats to digest vegetable-based food provided by or scavenged from humans. Although somewhat at odds with the national space agenda, this valuation is not new. US stocks have defied all odds this year, and the market rally only strengthened in July. After two months of nearly nonstop gains for the S&P 500, a long-time chartmaster warns that the weakness that markets displayed in early August is just the beginning. As expected, the S&P 500 rallied after October when that headwind passed, and finished 2022 with a bang. Charts that Keller studies also indicate that this market rally has reached its late innings. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking those sectors include the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), and the Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB).

WASHINGTON — The United States and its Western allies are looking to China to help resolve the calamitous domino effect of Russia's exit from a crucial U.N.-backed agriculture deal. Beijing, one of Moscow's most strategic allies and the world's second-largest economy, was the indisputable top recipient of Ukrainian agricultural products under the landmark agreement known as the Black Sea Grain Initiative. After nearly a year in place, Russia ditched the pact last month, citing frustrations that the deal only benefited Ukraine. The agreement eased Russia's naval blockade in the Black Sea and established a maritime humanitarian corridor which saw the passage of more than 1,000 ships carrying nearly 33 million metric tons of Ukrainian wheat, barley, corn and sunflower meal. Since the inception of the July 2022 deal, which was brokered nearly six months into Russia's full-scale war, Chinese ports have welcomed 8 million metric tons of Ukrainian agricultural products, the lion's share according to data provided by the United Nations.

In order to face either one head on, you must stand on a small, uneven platform of homemade adobe bricks. This is a message from the artist: He’s not interested in a seamless viewing experience. It recalls his contribution to the 2017 Whitney Biennial, where he created a room of adobe bricks. Here, a winding path of bricks connects life-size portraits of members of esparza’s largely queer community. The paintings are also on adobe, referencing his Mexican heritage and accentuating his subjects’ brown skin.

US brands are testing TikTok's shopping feature that competes with Amazon. TikTok Shops charges lower fees than Amazon, but it requires too many resources from brands. Many big brands are also investing in loyalty programs that don't connect well with social commerce features, she said. Saudi Arabia's economy slowed in the second quarter, as crude output cuts and a drop in oil prices reined in one of the fastest growing nations of the G20. Riyadh's GDP expanded by an annual 1.1% in the second quarter, the Saudi General Authority for Statistics said Monday, down from 3.8% in the previous quarter and 11.2% in the same period of 2022. The non-oil sector — where Saudi Arabia is directing its socioeconomic reforms under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 economic diversification program — grew by 5.5% in the second quarter. But hydrocarbon-reliant Riyadh logged a 4.2% loss in non-oil GDP in the second quarter, bearing the brunt of lower global crude prices and voluntary oil production cuts. Oil prices spiked last year, as Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and ensuing international sanctions decoupled many Western consumers from Russian crude supplies.

LONDON/HOUSTON/SINGAPORE, July 31 (Reuters) - Oil inventories are beginning to fall in some regions as demand outpaces supply constrained by deep production cuts from OPEC leader Saudi Arabia, providing support for prices which are expected to rise in coming months. JP Morgan analysts said this month that oil inventories - which include crude and fuel products - now play a bigger role in determining oil prices than the U.S. dollar because Western sanctions on Russia have accelerated oil trading in other currencies. Stock declines have been geographically uneven so far, with inventory falls in the United States and Europe offset by increases in China and Japan. Weekly stocks of diesel, jet fuel and fuel oil in the five regions are also currently below their five-year averages. Crude inventories in Japan have added 25 million barrels, or 8%, since April to stand at their highest in nearly two years, according to Kayrros.

A one-armed robot stood in front of a table. On the table sat three plastic figurines: a lion, a whale and a dinosaur. An engineer gave the robot an instruction: “Pick up the extinct animal.”The robot whirred for a moment, then its arm extended and its claw opened and descended. Until very recently, this demonstration, which I witnessed during a podcast interview at Google’s robotics division in Mountain View, Calif., last week, would have been impossible. Robots weren’t able to reliably manipulate objects they had never seen before, and they certainly weren’t capable of making the logical leap from “extinct animal” to “plastic dinosaur.”

I was singing, fired up by the thrilling energy of “Mandinka,” when I became aware of flashing blue lights. On Wednesday, Ms. O’Connor’s body was found in a London apartment. Auden wrote of Yeats, “Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry.” Cruel Ireland hurt Ms. O’Connor into song. She was furious that in a country that had supposedly fought for and won its freedom, women and children were so silenced and disempowered. She understood and had experienced pain, neglect and injustice and sang for those who also knew these things.

CNN —Sinéad O’Connor knew the value of her music legacy. In a 2021 interview with People magazine to promote her memoir “Rememberings,” O’Connor said she had explained to her children the importance of protecting her music and finances. To that end, she said she told them to call her accountant before they telephoned 911 should she ever be found dead. “See, when the artists are dead, they’re much more valuable than when they’re alive,” she told the publication. No cause of death has been released, but London police said Thursday it was not being treated as suspicious.
