DOHA, Dec 8 (Reuters) - All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappe once again as France take on England in a mouthwatering World Cup quarter-final clash but the defending champions must hope their lack of options from the bench will not be exposed on Saturday. WALKER v MBAPPEOne of the strengths that has emerged through the tournament is England’s depth. Their tally of 12 goals – equalling their World Cup best set from three more matches in 2018 – has been achieved via eight players. While the goalscorers grab the headlines, Southgate made sure he complimented his defenders after the last 16 match as his side chalked up a third successive World Cup clean sheet for the first time in 20 years. One thing that should be a given is that England will not be overawed by the occasion after their recent runs to the last four of the 2018 World Cup and final of Euro 2020.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday that the strong international support for Ukraine has likely impacted China's thinking about Taiwan. Blinken reiterated that the United States is determined to preserve peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and indicated that robust support to Ukraine would help rather than deter that goal. Blinken said Beijing has seen “countries coming together in extraordinary ways to make sure that Ukraine has what it needs to defend itself, to put tremendous pressure on Russia to ends its aggression, and as well, to make sure that, in the case of NATO, we're strengthening our own capacity to defend ourselves in case that aggression were to spread.”“And I think that has to have an impact on China's thinking about the future and about what it may be looking at in terms of Taiwan,” he said. Some context: Under the “One China” policy, the US acknowledges China’s position that Taiwan is part of China but has never officially recognized the Communist Party’s claim to the self-governing island of 23 million. The US provides Taiwan with defensive weapons but has remained intentionally ambiguous on whether it would intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese attack.

Explosions at two Russian air bases Monday have focused attention on Ukraine's efforts to develop longer-range combat drones. The Russian Defense Ministry says the attacks were carried out by Ukrainian drones, which it claims were brought down by Russian air defenses. Imagery — both satellite and photographs — indicates some damage was done to Russian military planes at one base in Ryazan region. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has offered no official comment on the explosions, and the Ukrainian government has not acknowledged adding long-range attack drones to its arsenal. The two bases hit, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, are hundreds of miles inside Russian territory and beyond the reach of Ukraine's declared arsenal of drones.
CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a visit to the Kerch Bridge, a key link between the annexed Crimean peninsula and mainland Russia which was partially destroyed by an explosion in October, according to Russian state media. In another video Putin is seen walking along a section of the bridge. The Kerch Bridge pictured after the explosion on October 8. AL KHOR, Qatar, Nov 25 (Reuters) - England suffered a sobering reality check as they were outplayed for long periods by a youthful United States side in a tense 0-0 draw in their second World Cup Group B game on Friday. A 6-2 thrashing of Iran on Monday sent fans' hopes soaring but Gareth Southgate's side were fortunate not to suffer a repeat of their 1950 World Cup calamity against the Americans. England captain Harry Kane sent a late header wide that would have given England a first World Cup win over the U.S. at the third attempt but it would have been a travesty. "Wasn't the best performance for sure," Kane, who remains two behind Wayne Rooney's England record 53 goals, said. Haji Wright, the only change to Gregg Berhalter's line-up from the opening draw with Wales, headed wide and England had a huge let-off when McKennie half-volleyed over.
Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan, Qatar CNN —Canada was taught a tough lesson as it lost 1-0 to Belgium in its first World Cup match for 36 years on Wednesday. Despite all its dominance, Canada couldn’t get the goal it so richly deserved and had the frustration of seeing Alphonso Davies’ penalty saved by Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois in the first half. Belgium reached the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and the European team made Canada pay for their wastefulness. Jack Guez/AFP/Getty ImagesThe entire Canada squad huddled in the middle of the pitch after the match as Belgium’s players celebrated with their fans. Despite the defeat, Canada looked like a team that belonged on the world stage and it can be proud of giving the world’s second-ranked team a real fright.
England thrash Iran 6-2 in strong start to World Cup

DOHA, Nov 21 (Reuters) - England hammered Iran 6-2 on Monday in an emphatic World Cup opener thanks to two goals from Bukayo Saka and strikes by Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling, before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish rounded off the rout. England had come close to taking the lead in the Group B opener, with Harry Maguire heading against the crossbar, before Bellingham, 19, steered in a header from a Luke Shaw cross in the 35th minute. Eight minutes later, England doubled their lead when Maguire climbed highest from a corner to head down for Saka to score. Mehdi Taremi narrowed the gap for Iran three minutes later but Rashford made it 5-1 and Grealish, also coming off the bench, scored England's sixth. Taremi scored a consolation second goal for Iran from the penalty spot in the dying seconds.
England manager Gareth Southgate had come under fire during a six-game winless run in the Nations League ahead of the World Cup -- his sides lacking fluidity and forward thrust. It made Bellingham the youngest England scorer at a World Cup since Michael Owen in 1998 and the first player born in 2000 or later ever to score in the finals. Another former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas added: "Bellingham has been outrageous today. But if England are to go deep in Qatar, Bellingham could be the spark that ignites Southgate's team. "Wins take the pressure off, when you win games, you're at ease for a little bit longer," Bellingham said.

England came into the tournament without a win in six games, but a dynamic opening 45 minutes in which Jude Bellingham scored his first England goal, Bukayo Saka doubled the lead and Raheem Sterling grabbed a third set up a second-half stroll. Shaw was the provider again for England's second goal as his corner was headed back across the area by Harry Maguire to Saka, who volleyed expertly into the top corner. Doha, Qatar CNN —Before a ball was even kicked in Iran’s World Cup opener against England on Monday, Iran’s players made a powerful statement. Before the tournament began, Iran’s manager Carlos Queiroz said players would be allowed to protest while they competed in Qatar. The silent show of respect on Monday was met with a loud reaction from the Iranian fans, many of whom cheered throughout. “We know players are under immense pressure, nevertheless the Iranian population expects them to do something,” one fan told CNN. In October, a group of prominent Iranian athletes lobbied FIFA via a law firm, urging the governing body to suspend the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) and ban it from participating at the World Cup.

"The softer inflation data took some wind out of the dollar's sails," said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Convera in Washington. Hackers linked to Russia's military were very likely behind ransomware attacks last month on Ukrainian and Polish transportation and logistics organizations, Microsoft said Thursday. The revelation will raise concerns in Washington and European capitals that allies supporting Ukraine against Russia's invasion could face greater cyber threats from Moscow. Poland is a NATO member and a key conduit for supplying military aid to Ukraine. The hacks "did cause damage" at the transportation and logistics companies in Poland and Ukraine, a Microsoft spokesperson told CNN. It's a rare public example of an alleged Russian hack related to the war causing damage in a NATO member country.
