Nouriel Roubini says stagflation risk will rise if Donald Trump wins the election. AdvertisementThe US economy might confront a fate more challenging than a recession if Donald Trump retakes the White House, famed economist Nouriel Roubini said. According to Roubini, Trump's proposals would fuel these two key ingredients: lower growth and higher inflation. In July, JPMorgan's chief global strategist David Kelly called Trump's tariff and immigration policy mix an "elixir for stagflation." AdvertisementRoubini said tensions in the Middle East make the threat of stagflation under Trump worse.

Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC affiliated with the Koch network of political advocacy groups, is launching a slate of new ads backing Republicans across multiple Senate battleground races, spending $8.75 million on a campaign focused largely on issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration. With party control of both chambers of Congress up for grabs in November, the group has spent about $60 million on election advertising already in 2024, according to FEC filings. Americans for Prosperity Action backed Nikki Haley for president in 2023 but has focused its efforts since then on promoting conservative down-ballot candidates through digital advertising, door-knocking, phone-banking and election mailers. The group is not investing in efforts to promote Donald Trump this fall. It has contacted more than 9 million voters about congressional races nationwide this election cycle.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is launching a blitz in Arizona this week, with plans to swamp the battleground state with events and canvassing efforts, all timed around the start of early voting. “All of that, to me, is the type of activity that’s required to win a close race. Campaign officials also say to expect Harris to time events around early voting in many of the battleground states. Those polls also show Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego outperforming Harris in his race against Republican Kari Lake. We know it’s gonna be a close race.

Viewers tuning into NFL and college football games in recent weeks have been bombarded with two Trump ads — running nationally and locally in swing states — that take issue with Vice President Kamala Harris’ past support for taxpayer-funded gender-affirming treatments. “So we’ll talk about it for them.”The Harris campaign declined to comment on the record. The two trans ads are Trump’s two most-seen commercials during professional and college football games, according to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political commercials and ad spending. Trump campaign officials say the ads will make it harder for Harris to make up ground with men, where polls show her trailing Trump. A Trump campaign official said the campaign's internal polling showed the ad was resonating with Black men — a demographic the campaign is courting.

CLEVELAND — Some Democrats working to re-elect Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio this fall are attempting to raise fears about his opponent’s Colombian family and heritage, drawing charges of racism from Republicans. “Our tax dollars, a Moreno family windfall. Bernie Moreno only cares about himself.”The rhetoric has become a late-emerging tension point in a race that could determine partisan control of the Senate. Ohio and Montana, two states where former President Donald Trump twice won by large margins, are the top two GOP targets. “We strongly condemn these dehumanizing acts and demand respect and justice.”The Dominican Republic, which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti, last week said it would deport up to 10,000 migrants per week who were in the country illegally, a sharp increase. So far this month, the Dominican Republic has deported more than 9,000 people, more than 7,000 of those since Thursday, the nation’s migration agency said in a statement on Monday. More than 4,900 of the total were Haitians, a Dominican official who declined to be named told Reuters. If the Dominican Republic follows through on its plan, the number deported in a year would rise sharply from more than 200,000 Haitians forcibly returned last year. In the United States, presidential candidate Donald Trump has also pledged mass deportations and has made false claims about Haitian migrants in the town of Springfield, Ohio.

And ‘X’ users say eating disorder content flourished on the platform. On Oct. 7, Hamas militants stormed the same base where Lifshitz was previously stationed, killing 15 young women in their assault. Many of the users identified as teen girls and young women, some as young as 13, NBC News found. Three users said that they’ve been exposed to eating disorder posts and communities on X through their algorithm-driven “For You” page, despite not knowingly engaging with such content previously. Despite X’s moderation, at least seven more communities featuring content promoting eating disorders and self-harm were identified.

Vice President Kamala Harris for weeks was criticized for avoiding tough questions that came with long-form traditional media interviews. In an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that aired Monday evening, she faced many of them all at once. “Was it a mistake to loosen the immigration policies as much as you did?” “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker asked. Whitaker, who noted that the border security issue had been ongoing for decades, tried twice more to pin Harris down. It was just one of the searing questions that Whitaker formulated as he peppered Harris and, for a shorter time, Minnesota Gov.

Since August, we’ve been talking weekly with a group of young voters who are torn among Donald Trump, Kamala Harris and a write-in choice, to track their changing opinions. These undecided voters are really, really troubled by Trump’s refusal to admit he lost the 2020 election (and Vance’s refusal to say that in the debate). But Tim Walz’s question to Vance at the debate — did Trump lose the 2020 election? But I don’t know if I trust Trump to be a normal person for the next three months,” said Lillian, a 27-year-old Virginian who voted for Trump in 2020 but is now undecided. These voters suggest that Trump should be more worried than Harris right now.

CNN —The Justice Department announced charges Tuesday against an Afghan national who was allegedly plotting a terrorist attack in support of ISIS on Election Day in the United States. The juvenile has also been arrested, according to court documents. The indictment comes as the Justice Department has publicly – and repeatedly – said its focus is on protecting the November presidential election from foreign threats. Tawhedi’s alleged plot, which prosecutors say was aimed at targeting “large gatherings of people,” was foiled less than a month before voters head to the polls. They also cited a video found on the phone that prosecutors say showed the 27-year-old telling his child about the rewards a martyr receives in the afterlife.

In a fact-bending blast of disinformation, the former president is charging Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s White House of the very transgressions of which he stands accused. This is false, but Trump, while president, did repurpose FEMA funds to help finance his hardline immigration policies. But in retrospect, the charade featuring his first White House press secretary Sean Spicer was a harbinger of an administration that bucked fact as an instrument of political power. Trump voters respond to his populism and his evisceration of elites and many sincerely believe he’s a response to a march to the left by the Democratic Party. Both Trump and Harris, who are deadlocked in the polls, are chasing voters who may not habitually follow politics.

Goldman lowers recession odds to just 15%

The bank's economists over the weekend lowered their recession probability to just 15%, which chief economist Jan Hatzius classified as the "unconditional long-term average." September's smashing nonfarm payrolls surge of 254,000 and a downward move in the unemployment rate served as a catalyst for the firm to nearly abandon the chance of a contraction. Prior to the report, traders had been betting that the Fed might repeat its 50 basis point — half percentage point — interest rate cut from September before the end of the year. But expectations have swung now, and Goldman concurs with market pricing that the "next few meetings" will see 25 basis point moves. That's about 1.5 percentage points lower than the current level and 2 full percentage points below the pre-September cut.

Trump sat down with “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl in October 2020 and abruptly ended the interview when he apparently objected to Stahl’s questions. Trump told reporters in Wisconsin last week that he’d “like to get an apology” for that interview before sitting down for another one. “If he is not going to give your viewers the ability to have a meaningful, thoughtful conversation, question and answer with you, then watch his rallies,” Harris told Whitaker.

Sweden registered 81,301 asylum seekers in 2014, data shows. Jonas Ekstromer | Afp | Getty Images"It pains me that Sweden is no longer capable of receiving asylum seekers at the high level we do today. Since then, Sweden's immigration policy has been on a one-way street. A decade ago, all member states of the European Union were encouraged to welcome asylum seekers and refugees fleeing conflict zones in the Middle East, notably Syria but also Iraq and Afghanistan. This year, Sweden is expected to have its lowest number of asylum seekers since 1997.

More than 90% of travelers from Southeast Asia say that gun prevalence in the United States influences whether they will visit, according to a new survey. However, nearly 80% said the likelihood that they would attend a mass gathering — such as a concert or music festival — would be greatly or moderately affected by the number of guns in the United States. Half of those surveyed said they have been to the United States. But a prior visit didn't calm Singaporeans' worries about gun violence to the same extent as other nationalities. Another 5% said they will out-and-out refuse to visit if Trump wins, with 2% saying the same about a Harris win.
