In Iowa, where evangelical Christians dominate the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential caucuses, Rowland and other pastors are delivering a message meant to resonate both biblically and politically. While curbing abortion has for decades energized Christian conservatives like no other issue, the attack by Hamas and Israel's response have put new pressure on Republican candidates to hew not just to traditional Republican support for Israel but to beliefs rooted in the Bible. Some Christians support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland. Some evangelicals believe Israel is key to an end-times prophecy that will bring about the return of the Christian messiah. Daniel Hummel, author of “Covenant Brothers: Evangelicals, Jews, and U.S.-Israeli Relations," said that Republican support for Israel has become a proxy for other conservative priorities, particularly on immigration.

Sen. Tim Scott's presidential campaign, once seen as emerging force, has faltered in recent weeks. Scott has sought to offer an optimistic message to voters, but Trump remains on top in the GOP race. The rise of fellow South Carolinian Nikki Haley has also complicated Scott's path to the nomination. Over the course of Scott's campaign, his campaign has so far focused heavily on winning the Iowa caucuses, and during the summer he was seemingly clipping at Florida Gov. A leading Scott backer, who spoke to Politico anonymously, remarked that the senator's campaign team "fundamentally miscalculated what it means to run for president and generate news coverage."

GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie has a basic message for House Republicans: Get a speaker. AdvertisementAdvertisementNearly three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted as House speaker, House Republicans have been unable to coalesce around a successor. For GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie, he's already seen enough. Once a Trump ally, Christie in recent years has become a major critic of the former president, which has both elevated his candidacy and turned off sizable numbers of GOP voters. However, of all of the early-voting states, Christie is best positioned in New Hampshire, where he's largely focused his campaign.

DeSantis and Haley Spar Over Israel, Refugees

GOP presidential contenders have rushed to stand with Israel, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is trying to reinforce that stance by attacking a rival candidate, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. DeSantis has broadly described people living in Gaza as antisemites and said he would refuse to accept any refugees into the U.S. Haley, when on CNN Sunday asked about DeSantis's remarks, said, "America has always been sympathetic to the fact that you can separate civilians from terrorists.” On Tuesday, a group supporting DeSantis launched a TV ad accusing Haley of trying to be "politically correct." Haley, who has climbed in polls, shot back that a "desperate" DeSantis is lying about her record and said she opposes taking in refugees from Gaza.

Those early states are Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, all of which are among the first to hold nominating contests. The Republican National Committee has laid out several requirements for surveys to count toward this requirement, including that they must take place after Sept. 1. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina also appear to have a solid shot of being there, according to recent polls. The November debate could make a difference for some candidates, but is unlikely to change the fundamental dynamics of the race.

CNN —The public’s impressions of the Republican Party and its leaders in Congress have worsened amid a leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, with Republican-aligned Americans divided over how the GOP should govern. A 56% majority of Republican-aligned voters who back former President Donald Trump say they approve of McCarthy’s ouster, compared with just 37% of those not supporting Trump in the primary. That division is evident across multiple measures of the Republican Party’s performance or of views on its path forward. Asked about Republican leaders in Congress, 51% of Trump supporters approve of their work, while just 35% of other Republican-aligned voters feel the same. Among the public generally, impressions of the Republican Party are deeply negative.

CNN —In the wake of Hamas’ deadly attacks on Israel, former President Donald Trump is turning to a strategy he employed during the 2016 campaign of using terror abroad – and fears of future attacks on American soil – to push for hard-line immigration policies in the United States. The former president’s rhetoric harks back to his 2016 presidential campaign and his first term in office, when he used fears over terror attacks stateside to block immigrants and refugees from predominantly Muslim countries. “We have leadership who doesn’t know what they’re doing,” Trump said after those attacks. But a few candidates have joined Trump in drawing parallels between the attacks in Israel and safety in the US. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has also sought to tie Israel’s war with Hamas to US-Mexico border policy.

Hurd, a former CIA officer, reiterated his argument that Trump is so divisive that he will likely lose a general election next year if he becomes the Republican nominee. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that Iran has not yet been able to spend a single dollar of the $6 billion in funds that were unfrozen in a U.S.-Iran prisoner swap in September. WHAT WAS THE IRAN PRISONER SWAP DEAL? Five U.S. citizens detained by Tehran were allowed to leave the country in exchange for the transfer of $6 billion in Iranian funds that had been frozen in South Korea. Former President Trump remains well ahead of his fellow Republican presidential contenders. But Nikki Haley is in a solid position in both GOP statewide polling and general election matchups. As other candidates leave the race, Haley's viability as a top Trump alternative will likely strengthen. Meanwhile, Haley's stock may be low, but very importantly it's up: she's averaging around 8% in the FiveThirtyEight GOP polling average, up from 3% at the beginning of August. AP Photo/Meg KinnardA Public Opinion Strategies survey of New Hampshire had Trump ahead with 44% support, with Haley in second place with 17% support.

But in first-primary state New Hampshire, Trump sits in the campaign driver's seat, with nearly half of Granite State GOP primary voters saying the former president is their first pick for the 2024 presidential nomination. Nikki Haley, who served as Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, came in second with 19% support – the highest level she has attained in New Hampshire primary polls. The survey found that voters were not very willing to shift to other candidates at this point, months before the yet-unscheduled New Hampshire primary. But the Suffolk poll indicates that Trump's legal woes have not deterred his base. "Add in second-choice votes from all the other major candidates – even if they all endorsed Haley – and Trump sits above 55%," Paleologos said.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign said Wednesday it will move about a third of its staff to Iowa, underscoring the do-or-die importance the Florida governor is placing on the leadoff caucuses. Sending about a third of the 56 Tallahassee-based staff to Iowa gives DeSantis by far the biggest organizational footprint in Iowa, where he has had four staff. “If we’re able to beat Donald Trump in Iowa, that's a huge problem for him,” DeSantis campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo said. The $15 million DeSantis' team plans to report for the quarter is less than his $20 million second quarter fundraising total. The Iowa campaign moves and fundraising total were first reported by The New York Times.

Still, the DeSantis campaign remains adamant that the race is far from settled and the timing of these recent broadsides is coming as 2024 is only just now coming into focus for many voters. “The time for contrast was not over the summer when the government was going after (Trump),” said Ryan Tyson, a senior adviser to DeSantis’ campaign. Club for Growth president David McIntosh recently warned about the potential pitfalls of attacking Trump too aggressively. “Every traditional post-production ad attacking President Trump either backfired or produced no impact on his ballot support and favorability,” McIntosh wrote. A new phaseThis new phase of the DeSantis campaign marks a significant departure from the spring and summer, when DeSantis did not always appear comfortable criticizing Trump.

BERLIN, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Serbia's troop deployment on Kosovo's border recalls Russia's behaviour towards Ukraine before its invasion, the Kosovar foreign minister said, urging the European Union to take action against Belgrade such as freezing its candidacy status. "There has never been this kind of concentration of troops in recent years," Kosovar Foreign Minister Donika Gervalla-Schwarz told German broadcaster Deutschlandfunk in an interview on Monday. She said it was not just the concentration of troops on the edge of its former southern province, whose independence Belgrade does not recognise, but also Serbia's rhetoric and its "methods" resembling Russian behaviour towards Ukraine. In a tight election, amid questionable economic conditions and with the normality that Biden promised in 2020 still fleeting, the threat may be greater than ever. A pseudo general election campaignBoth Trump and Biden showed up in Michigan courting blue-collar votes this week. He returned to the theme that democracy is under attack – seemingly a slam dunk given Trump’s week of autocratic outbursts and demagoguery. And all previous evidence suggests that, among GOP voters at least, Trump legal travails only boost his poll numbers and fundraising. To anyone who has forgotten the constant tearing at legal, political and constitutional norms that characterized almost every day of the last presidency, Gaetz and his fellow MAGA troops are proving that Trumpism sows chaos.
