Pasadena, California-based Caltech sued Apple and Broadcom in 2016, alleging that millions of iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and other Apple devices using Broadcom chips infringed its wireless-communication patents. Caltech said in the Wednesday filing that it would dismiss the billion-dollar case with prejudice, which means that it cannot be refiled. Representatives for Caltech, Apple and Broadcom did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday. A jury ordered Apple to pay $837.8 million and Broadcom to pay $270.2 million in patent-infringement damages in 2020.

Some tech leaders see the gadgets as the iPhone of the AI era, a way to own the hardware we use to interact with AI. A true iPhone successor could be tech's "golden goose," but past attempts have failed. The race is on as generative AI tools like ChatGPT, OpenAI's conversational AI chatbot, take the world by storm. Even though he said AI hardware innovations represent "the golden goose for tech players in the next decade along with software," he doesn't think all of them will be successful. AdvertisementAdvertisementYet, despite AI's impressive capabilities, Haigh said that smartphones may still be easier to use for the average consumer than AI devices, which means that AI personal devices may take awhile to gain public interest.

Yes, experts agree we might want to settle other worlds, but Mars might not be our best bet, at least not now, four scientists told Insider. Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. delivers his political soapbox speech at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. August 12, 2023. REUTERS/Scott Morgan/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of one of the most storied American political families, could draw the support of about one in seven U.S. voters, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll ahead of his presidential campaign's expected Monday launch. The poll found that Kennedy, the son and namesake of the slain U.S. senator, could draw votes away from both Democratic President Joe Biden and his likely Republican challenger Donald Trump in the 2024 election. In a hypothetical three-way matchup, Kennedy drew 14% support, Biden's share fell to 31% and Trump's to 33%. In addition to his father, his uncle Democratic President John F. Kennedy was also assassinated during the turbulent 1960s.

Tesla's Cybertruck is closer than ever, so we asked three experts on car design what they think about it. Instead of mimicking the upright, boxy shape of conventional pickups, Tesla's truck looks more like a triangle. "In car design, you wouldn't believe how much of a difference some small changes make," Licata said. Simplicity and purity are hallmarks of timeless design, Snyder said, and Tesla's wacky truck could fit the bill.

Democratic Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy's deep-pocketed backers and famous name, combined with a lack of broad enthusiasm for Biden and Trump, could help him take votes from their respective sides. The future of AI is set to be "spiritually, politically, and economically" corrosive, Lanier said. He noted that people building AI tech should let go of sci-fi wish fulfillment. He noted that, while this year has been the "year of AI," next year the world is going to be "flooded, flooded with AI-generated music." A deluge of generative AI content, from simple search prompts to eerie deepfakes, is now up for broad government regulation. In addition to AI-generated content nixing human connection found through creative works and causing an eventual collapse of the creative economy, Lanier said AI-generated content that can be perfected and customized also undermines peoples' "sense of reality.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Just a few years ago, artificial intelligence got barely a mention at the U.N. General Assembly's convocation of world leaders.
