And then there are penguins, which plunge a quarter-mile deep into icy waters in search of food. It now seems that modern birds are not the only dinosaur group to embrace the plunge-and-prey lifestyle. A team of researchers say they have found the earliest example of an extinct dinosaur with a body that was streamlined for diving. They described the dinosaur discovery in the journal Communications Biology on Thursday. The new duck-size dinosaur was at first overlooked.

Five cars rented by the Secret Service in Nantucket burst into flames a day after being returned. The cars were used by Secret Service agents during President Joe Biden's Thanksgiving trip. Neither Biden nor his family rode in the cars during the trip, a Secret Service spokesman told NBC. Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service spokesman, told NBC10 Boston the vehicles were rented from a Hertz outlet at the Nantucket Memorial Airport. Representatives at the Secret Service and the Nantucket Police Department did not immediately return Insider's requests for comment.
Adrian Ballinger has summited Mount Everest eight times. Alpenglow's prices can range from $275 for an introductory mountaineering course to up to $98,000 per person for a guided expedition up Mount Everest. Mountain climbing and entrepreneurship are both risky endeavors that require mental and physical resilience to succeed, Ballinger says. Source: Alpenglow ExpeditionsBy 2004, Ballinger wanted to branch out on his own. "That first year, I only guided two expeditions that I think had a total of, maybe, eight clients," Ballinger says.

In the early 2010s, Mr. Mellow set out for still more distant shores, traveling to many famous surf breaks in the South Pacific. Mr. Abdul-Rashed and Mr. Danian traveled to Hawaii to connect with Mr. Mellow, their spiritual guide and Pacific expedition leader. Mr. Mellow posted an ad on Facebook and Craigslist offering $10,000 for passage to the South Pacific. Mr. Schmidt was in sync with the young seekers when it came to fear of Big Brother and vaccines, but dreading port officials brandishing nasal swabs struck even Mr. Schmidt as a little unhinged. When asked if he was at all responsible for what had happened to Mr. Danian and Mr. Abdul-Rashed, Mr. Mellow looked genuinely confused.
Scientists from the American Bird Conservancy have rediscovered a rare bird not documented since 1882. The bird only lives on Ferguson Island, off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Researchers installed camera traps on Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea, with the results showing the rare black-naped pheasant-pigeon strutting in the images. Seeing the images was like "finding a unicorn," said John C. Mittermeier, Director of the Lost Birds program at the American Bird Conservancy and co-leader of the expedition. Christina Biggs, Manager for the Search for Lost Species at Re:wild, said, "This rediscovery is an incredible beacon of hope for other birds that have been lost for a half-century or more."
CNN —A bird thought to be extinct for 140 years has been rediscovered in the forests of Papua New Guinea. Rediscovering the bird required an expedition team to spend a grueling month on Fergusson, a rugged island in the D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago off eastern Papua New Guinea where the bird was originally documented. The team consisted of local staff at the Papua New Guinea National Museum as well as international scientists from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the American Bird Conservancy. Many members of the community told the team that they hadn’t seen the black-naped pheasant-pigeon in decades, says the news release. So the expedition team placed a camera on a 3,200-foot high ridge near the Kwama River above Duda Ununa, according to the release.
The leaks were different from those that forced NASA to call off the first two Artemis launch attempts. As part of the Artemis program, NASA envisions regular missions to the moon to establish a base camp on the lunar surface before the agency eventually ventures to Mars. Martin added that each Artemis launch is expected to cost around $4.1 billion. If successful, Artemis I will be followed by a planned Artemis II test flight, tentatively scheduled for sometime in 2024. After that, NASA said the Artemis III flight will include the first woman and first person of color to land on the moon.
Now, these two women have channeled their exploring spirit into climbing some of the world’s most difficult mountains as part of their campaign, Project Shakthi, which raises money to fund girls’ education. Project Shakthi TeamRainy weather conditions that turned to snow at high altitude added to the complexities of climbing a virgin peak. And I just finished my education.”Malavath and Manyapu hold up their Project Shakthi logo at the summit. As part of this, Project Shakthi will partner with the US-based AVS Academy to pair student volunteers with girls sponsored by the organization so that they can receive one-on-one mentorship. And to tackle this global issue, Project Shakthi has set its sights on broadening its goals.
Users on social media are saying people on Earth are living under a dome, also called a “firmament,” without providing evidence to support the claim. But the video’s examples offer no proof of humans living under a dome or firmament, while there is ample evidence that no dome exists. “Rocket hitting the flat earth dome”, reads the title of one of the YouTube clips. SIXTY YEARS OF SPACEFLIGHTExperts pointed out that if there were a dome that covered the Earth, astronauts would have encountered it by now. A video provides no evidence that the Earth is under a dome or “firmament”.
In August, scientists and adventurers found camera gear abandoned by Brad Washburn, an American explorer, in 1937. By tracing the camera's path, scientists could learn how the glacier has changed over eight decades. "They essentially needed help to figure out how the glacier is moving and what's the best way of finding the cache," Medrzycka told Insider. "It was an amazing feeling, and I felt relief that I didn't fail at finding the cache," Medrzycka said, adding, "It was an epic moment for everyone." The team also retrieved two other cameras, including a DeVry "Lunchbox" model, with film still loaded inside.
Oct 14 (Reuters) - The fourth long-duration astronaut team launched by SpaceX to the International Space Station (ISS) safely returned to Earth on Friday, splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida after nearly six months of research aboard the orbital outpost. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule dubbed Freedom, carrying three U.S. NASA astronauts and an Italian crewmate from the European Space Agency, parachuted into the sea at the conclusion of a five-hour autonomous flight home from the ISS. Camera shots from inside the crew compartment showed the four strapped in their seats, garbed in helmeted white-and-black spacesuits. Applause from the SpaceX flight control center in suburban Los Angeles was heard over the webcast. During their 170 days aboard the space station, the crew orbited Earth 2,720 times - about once every 90 minutes - to log some 72 million miles (116 million km) in space, according to NASA.
CNN —SpaceX said Wednesday that it has booked yet another mission around the moon for a wealthy thrill-seeker on its forthcoming Starship spacecraft. He declined on Wednesday to share any financial information about the upcoming Starship mission. It’s not clear when the first crewed Starship mission will take off, however. But Starship is far bigger than anything that SpaceX — or any other rocket developer — has ever built. It’s expected to have more thrust than both NASA’s Saturn V rocket, which powered the moon landings of the mid-20th century, and the space agency’s new moon rocket, called SLS, or Space Launch System.
Elizabeth Holmes' sentencing has been pushed back again and could happen as late as next year. On Monday, a judge ordered a hearing into whether prosecutors engaged in misconduct surrounding a star witness who visited Holmes' house last month and expressed regret over his testimony. That hearing, a victory for Holmes in her quest for a new trial, will now take place on October 17. He set aside October 17, the date previously reserved for Holmes' sentencing, for the hearing but said he doesn't expect it to take a full day. In Holmes' trial, Rosendorff testified he'd tried to postpone the launch of Theranos' machines for patient use because they gave inaccurate results, but Holmes went ahead with it anyway.
Nelson's body was eventually found and retrieved on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Shangri-La Nepal Trek, the company that organized the expedition, told NBC News. The spokesperson said Nelson's body would be transported to Kathmandu. Tour company Elite Exped and mountaineer Nims Purja, its co-founder, said in an Instagram post that the company's team had successfully recovered Nelson's body. On Monday, an avalanche at a lower elevation on Mount Manaslu swept away several climbers, killing a Nepali guide and injuring others. Nepal’s government has issued permits to over 500 climbers looking to attempt to scale high mountain peaks during the autumn season, with most of them setting their sights on Mount Manaslu.
The body of US mountaineer and extreme skier Hilaree Nelson was found on Wednesday in the Himalayas. A rescue team recovered her body near the peak of Mount Manaslu , the eighth highest summit in the world. Mount Nelson, 49, went missing on Monday as she was attempting to sky down the summit with her partner. Nelson, 49, had gone missing on Monday after falling down the peak of the world's eighth highest peak, Mount Manaslu, per The New York Times. In 2018, they successfully skied down Lhotse, the world's fourth-highest mountain, which straddles Nepal and Tibet, per the Times.
KATHMANDU, Nepal — Nepalese rescuers in a helicopter were searching Tuesday for a famed U.S. ski climber a day after she fell off near the peak of the world’s eighth-highest mountain. We made two helicopter rescue attempts to find her but were unable,” Sherpa said. Nepal’s government has issued permits to 504 climbers to attempt to scale high mountain peaks during the autumn season.
The mission, known as DART, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will attempt a method of planetary defense that could save Earth from an asteroid on a potential collision course with the planet. On Monday, the spacecraft will crash into Dimorphos at a blistering speed of around 4 miles per second, or 15,000 mph. Ground-based telescopes will be used to time Dimorphos' orbit and determine whether the mission was a success. The Applied Physics Lab built and manages the $325 million DART mission for NASA. Even if the DART mission fails, scientists will learn a lot from the experiment, said Andrea Riley, a program executive in NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office.
Jay Powell just went full Volcker

But in just a few months, that sizable jump has become the norm, and it’s almost certainly sealed Jay Powell’s status as the Paul Volcker of the 2020s. “Chair Powell just announced another extreme interest rate hike while forecasting higher unemployment,” Warren tweeted. Bottom line: Powell continues to draw from the Volcker playbook, which means he’s unlikely to waver on the Fed’s target rate of 2% inflation, lest the central bank’s credibility take another blow. Only time will tell whether that 40-plus-year-old playbook still applies in an economy that’s fundamentally different from the one Volcker confronted. Trump also lied about the square footage of his Trump Tower triplex apartment to inflate the value at over $300 million, James alleges.
Jack Dorsey will be questioned under oath on Tuesday regarding Elon Musk's legal battle with Twitter. Musk's legal team subpoenaed the Twitter cofounder as a part of a slew of legal requests in August. Dorsey resigned as Twitter's CEO last year and has supported Musk's Twitter purchase. Musk's legal team originally subpoenaed former Dorsey in August. In August, Musk's legal team submitted several legal filings, including subpoenas to two former Twitter employees and several companies, including Discord.
Reid Hoffman said he was initially concerned when he learned of Elon Musk's decision to buy Twitter. Other members of Musk's social circle told Axios they warned him against buying Twitter. He's already dealing with a large number,'" Hoffman told Axios in a podcast interview, referencing Musk's offer to buy Twitter on April 14. Hoffman told Axios he never doubts Musk for long — even when it came to his initial decision to purchase Twitter. Whether Musk will be forced to buy Twitter has yet to be decided.
NASA will try again to launch its next-generation megarocket and space capsule to the moon later this month, with a new attempt set for Sept. 27. Agency officials confirmed Monday that repairs are still underway to address hydrogen fuel leaks in the uncrewed Space Launch System rocket that thwarted two previous liftoff attempts. If successful, NASA will aim to launch the moon-bound mission, known as Artemis I, within a 70-minute window that opens at 11:37 a.m. The long-awaited debut of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule features a nearly six-week test flight to orbit the moon. The expedition is designed to assess the performance of the rocket and capsule before NASA sends astronauts back to the lunar surface.

He finally will realize his dream in 2024 via World View, which offers more affordable space flights. "It's a cliche for people to say it's a childhood dream, but it is a childhood dream," Cokinos told Insider. This is a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that other space tourism operators charge. For Cokinos, World View's flight cost will easily be absorbed from his decades' worth of retirement savings. World View's capsule is designed to optimize views and includes personal viewing screens for each passenger.
