In the “Serial” episode posted Tuesday, Koenig broke down prosecutors’ motion and described how some evidence they cited was featured in the podcast, while other evidence — including the evidence of other possible suspects — became public more recently. Other supporting evidence on the unreliability of a key witness and questions about cellphone data was previously featured on “Serial,” Koenig said. In the years since “Serial” chronicled Syed’s case and transformed the true-crime genre, a number of breakthroughs have come in other cases examined by like-minded podcasters.

Over numerous seasons of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” the tough and persistent assistant district attorney convicts scores of sex offenders and delivers justice to their victims. An internal NYPD investigation in 2018 criticized the department’s handling of sexual assault cases. A representative for Dick Wolf, the creator of “Law & Order,” did not respond to a request for comment. In a 2020 special celebrating the long-running “SVU,” Mariska Hargitay, who plays detective Olivia Benson, spoke of the positive impact the show had on sexual assault survivors. Others have argued that “Law & Order” and police procedurals more broadly shouldn’t be expected to reflect reality precisely because they are fictional – a point that Oliver acknowledged in his show.
Last time Bannon was busted in the "We Build the Wall" donor-scam case, it was aboard a $28 million yacht. And unlike after his 2020 arrest, Trump can't throw Bannon a life preserver in the form of a federal pardon. After he's booked, "they'll probably keep him in the DA-squad office, where they fingerprinted him, or the DA-Investigators' office," Saland said. There, he'll wait for his afternoon court appearance — quite possibly in a "1970s-era chair," Saland said. But it's certainly not going to be anything like a $28 million yacht."

Opening statements are scheduled Monday in Monterey County Superior Court in Salinas in the trial of Paul Flores and his father, Ruben Flores, who is charged as an accessory. San Luis Obispo Sheriff Ian Parkinson acknowledged missteps by detectives over the years and he credited a popular podcast about Smart’s disappearance called “Your Own Backyard” for helping unearth new information and inspiring witnesses to speak with investigators. Prosecutors, defense lawyers and San Luis Obispo sheriff’s deputies are constrained by a court order prohibiting them from discussing the case. Attorney Harold Mesick, who represents Ruben Flores, previously said the evidence unearthed was ambiguous.
