Amazon is bumping its average national pay for contracted delivery drivers to roughly $22 an hour, up from $20.50 an hour, the company said Thursday. The Teamsters union has led a number of strikes at Amazon delivery facilities in the past year, and it's made organizing Amazon employees a key focus after launching a division dedicated to the online retail giant in 2021. Amazon has fought to avoid being designated as a joint employer of its contracted delivery drivers, arguing that the workers are employed by third-party firms. But more than half the global population isn’t eating enough of these and five other nutrients also crucial for human health, according to a new study. More than 5 billion people don’t consume enough iodine, vitamin E or calcium, found the study published August 29 in the journal The Lancet Global Health. Billions of people don’t consume enough of at least seven micronutrients present in hundreds of foods, according to a new study. For these reasons, the research team estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 15 micronutrients among 185 countries, or 99.3% of the population. “Therefore, iodine might be the only nutrient for which inadequate intake from food is largely overestimated,” the authors said, referring to their findings.

Read preview"What Nvidia's really good at is creating new markets," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon at a technology conference hosted by the investment bank Wednesday. Solomon asked the most important question in tech today: Where is the return on investment from all this investment in AI infrastructure? AdvertisementFirst, in the age of generative AI, Huang said, cloud providers who buy Nvidia (and other) GPUs and rent them to tech companies, make $5 for every $1 they spend. Huang argued that upgrading existing data centers to "accelerated computing," or the parallel computing that Nvidia GPUs and other AI chips enable, is inevitable. Even if Nvidia's claims that AI computing is more energy efficient are true, the AI boom is expected to put massive pressure on electricity grids.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country is now implementing a nuclear force construction policy to increase its number of nuclear weapons “exponentially,” state media reported Tuesday. Kim also said North Korea is facing a “grave threat” from what it sees as a U.S.-led nuclear-based military bloc in the region. South Korea will also hold a defense ministerial meeting with the member states of the United Nations Command (UNC) on Tuesday. Last month, Germany became the latest to join the UNC in South Korea that helps police the heavily fortified border with North Korea and has committed to defend the South in the event of a war. North Korea has criticized the UNC as an “illegal war organization” and Germany’s entry into the U.S.-led U.N. border monitoring force as raising tensions.

CNN —A group of key House Republicans have written to President Joe Biden urging him to lift the restrictions on the use of US-provided long-range weapons systems and allow Kyiv to strike targets deep inside Russia. The UK is also considering whether to allow Ukraine to strike deeper inside Russia with its own long-range system, the Storm Shadow. “No change to policy,” one senior administration official said, adding that there is currently no openness to lifting restrictions. Last month, senior Ukrainians presented US officials with targets they would like to strike in Russia during a visit to Washington. But the Ukrainians say there are weapons productions facilities that would be within reach of the ATACMS inside Russia that are worthy military targets, a source familiar with the Ukrainians position told CNN.

BMW trimmed its profitability guidance for 2024 on Tuesday, pointing to technical problems that led to delivery stops for cars as well as persistently sluggish demand in the key Chinese market. The German carmaker said it expects its margin of earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to be between 6% and 7% for 2024, having previously guided for a figure between 8% and 10%. In a statement, Continental said that only a "small proportion" of the braking systems it produces and supplies to BMW will be partially replaced because of an electronic component that may be impaired. The company also forecasts a slight decrease in deliveries, it said, without providing a specific figure, after having previously expected an increase. The technical actions related to the integrated braking systems impact over 1.5 million vehicles and will result in additional warranty costs in a high three-digit million amount in the third quarter, the company added.

BMW cut its profit margin forecast for the year Tuesday due to sluggish demand in China, its key market, and problems related to a braking system supplied by Continental, sending the carmaker’s shares close to a two-year low. The German luxury carmaker said delivery hold-ups linked to the braking system would have a negative effect on sales in the second half of the year, adding that more than 1.5 million cars were affected. Overall, BMW said, it will incur “a high three-digit-million amount” in warranty costs in the third quarter as a result. BMW also flagged ongoing muted demand in China affecting sales in the country, joining the automakers facing difficulties in the world’s second-biggest economy, which is also the world’s largest auto market. “Despite stimulus measures from the government, consumer sentiment remains weak,” BMW said.

Last year, the SEC mandated that public companies disclose material cybersecurity incidents. "These types of cybersecurity incidents have a real impact, potentially, on shareholder value," Kate Dedenbach, a privacy and cyber attorney at Fisher Phillips in Detroit, told Business Insider. "The SEC's goal is to provide investors with more robust and timely information about cybersecurity incidents so they can make more knowledgeable investment decisions." There's a timeframe for disclosuresThe SEC says that determining a cybersecurity incident's materiality should be done "without reasonable delay" but doesn't specify a timeframe. The SEC says companies can delay disclosure if a cybersecurity incident poses a substantial risk to national security or public safety.

CNN —The United States imposed new sanctions on Iran’s main airline as three key European allies announced they will move to do the same in response to Tehran’s transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine. Russia has now received shipments of these ballistic missiles and will likely use them within weeks in Ukraine,” Blinken said alongside his British counterpart, David Lammy. “It adds to their capacity, and it fuels the war,” Blinken said of the new Iranian missiles Russia now has. “Anyone who proves assistance to Russia … is perpetuating the war, is perpetuating the conflict,” he added. A vaccination campaign against mpox in Congo will begin Oct. 2, authorities said Saturday, with workers focusing on the three most affected provinces first. Earlier this week, the first batch of mpox vaccines arrived in the capital of Congo, the center of the outbreak. The European Union countries pledged to donate more than 500,000 others, but the timeline for their delivery remained unclear. Most mpox infections in Congo and Burundi, the second most affected country, are in children under age 15. Congo issued an emergency approval of the vaccine, which has already been used in Europe and the United States in adults.
