CNN —When BMX freestyler Kriss Kyle was out on a walk with his dogs during the pandemic, he looked up to the sky and saw a giant playground of potential for another of his daring deeds. The Scotsman has become well known for performing death-defying stunts and this one would be no different. “I thought I’d use the downtime [of the pandemic] to think of what is next and what has no one done before,” explains the Red Bull athlete. It’s not possible,’” Kyle admits. Watch the video above to see Kyle’s full story.
The two Soviet-era helicopters sped toward the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka just after dawn, flying 20 feet above the ground to keep the low-tech machines off radar. Three miles from the city, the Ukrainian pilots climbed to 100 feet and unleashed a volley of rockets onto several industrial buildings north of the city. As they headed back to the airfield, they got word that Russian jet fighters were racing toward them. They landed immediately to avoid being easy targets.
We won.”The legal dispute centers on a 2022 Crikey story that carried the headline, “Trump is a confirmed unhinged traitor. And Murdoch is his unindicted co-conspirator.”After the article was published, Murdoch demanded the story be removed and the outlet apologize. Murdoch followed through on the dare, filing a lawsuit against Crikey publisher Private Media. Crikey and Private Media said throughout the legal process that they would defend themselves and were confident in their case. Not only would he have been ensnared in another high-profile defamation case, his camp would have had to make effectively the opposite arguments it has made in the United States in regard to defamation law.

MEXICO CITY, April 18 (Reuters) - Nicaragua has withdrawn its approval of the European Union's ambassador to the country, the Central American nation's foreign ministry said Tuesday, after an EU statement calling for a "return to the rule of law" in Nicaragua. In a statement, the foreign ministry said the decision was due to the "interventionist, daring and insolent" position from the EU on Nicaragua. Nicaragua's foreign ministry accused the EU of "crimes against humanity," without citing evidence. It said it "will not receive" the EU's nominee for ambassador to the country, Fernando Ponz. Ponz was nominated for the role after Nicaragua declared the previous ambassador to the country, Bettina Muscheidt, "persona non grata" in September.

How Disney and DeSantis started feuding

Ron DeSantis won praise from the right for retaliating against Disney for its CEO’s decision to (rather timidly) wade into the public discourse over a contentious state law. In that first round of Florida’s GOP vs The Walt Disney Company, DeSantis landed a body blow that ultimately cost Disney CEO Bob Chapek his job. DeSantis signed the bill into law, and then set his sights on punishing Disney for daring to challenge him. “This essentially makes Disney the government,” said Ron Peri, a DeSantis pick for the new board, last week. Last week, Iger announced Disney would lay off 7,000 people as part of a $5.5 billion cost-reduction plan.
China and U.S. flags are seen near a TikTok logo in this illustration picture taken July 16, 2020. Florence Lo | ReutersBEIJING — China says it would "strongly oppose" a forced sale of TikTok, making clear the government's involvement with the social media giant that's trying hard to distance itself from Beijing authorities. ByteDance did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Chinese Commerce Ministry's remarks. But the commerce ministry's claim of control over a TikTok sale or spinoff indicates Beijing wants to be involved. When asked about the commerce ministry's remarks Thursday, TikTok's CEO said the app isn't available in mainland China and is based in Los Angeles.
In July 1941, a British submarine sank an Italian submarine in the Mediterranean Sea. It was against this backdrop that the Royal Navy submarine HMS Torbay and the Italian submarine Jantina squared off in the Aegean Sea near the island of Mykonos. The first two passed in front of the Italian sub, but the next struck it and exploded. The Italian sub sank quickly, and only six of the 48-man crew survived, swimming to a nearby island. By the end of the war, Torbay had sunk more than 40 German, Italian, and Japanese warships, merchant ships, and other vessels.

BEIJING, March 15 (Reuters) - A Chinese military doctor who exposed the full extent of the SARS epidemic when it ripped through Beijing in 2003 has died at the age of 91, according to his friends and local media reports. Jiang Yanyong accused the government of deliberately underreporting the spread of the respiratory disease in an open letter sent to state media in 2003. News of his death was not reported in Chinese state media, as is the norm with politically sensitive public figures. Some media including the South China Morning Post said he died on Saturday of pneumonia, citing sources. SARS infected 8,908 people worldwide after emerging in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, eventually killing 774, according to World Health Organisation data.
[1/2] Gas bubbles from the Nord Stream 2 leak reaching surface of the Baltic Sea in the area shows a disturbance of well over one kilometre in diameter near Bornholm, Denmark, September 27, 2022. "In an attempt to cover up the true people behind the crime, pro-government Anglo-Saxon media - on orders from above - have named a culprit - a group of Ukrainian terrorists," Patrushev told the Argumenti i Fakti newspaper. As a former Soviet spy who has known Putin since the 1970s, Patrushev is seen by diplomats as one of the major influences on Putin, who has accused the "Anglo-Saxons" of sabotaging Nord Stream in what he has called a terrorist attack. The Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines have a joint annual capacity of 110 billion cubic metres - more than half of Russia's normal gas exports volumes. Sections of the 1,224-km (760-mile) long pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany, lie at a depth of around 80-110 metres.

LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - From classic tuxedos to shiny jumpsuits, menswear has dazzled on the red carpets this awards season, sometimes even attracting the most attention with eye-catching looks. Singer Harry Styles arrived at the Grammy Awards in a chest-baring sparkling harlequin jumpsuit, while Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan has chosen ensembles in pale blue and red as his style choices for the Golden Globes and British Academy of Film (BAFTA) Awards. While classic suits and tuxedos are still a red carpet staple, menswear now features plenty of variety and bolder choices - vibrant colours, sparkling embroidery or detailing, as fashion favourite, actor Timothee Chalamet has often demonstrated with his non-traditional outfits. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne has won style accolades for his red carpet choices this awards season, which culminates with Sunday's Oscars. Asked what she thought of men's fashion this award season, Oscar nominee Michelle Yeoh told Reuters last month: "I love it."
A fire broke out at a Russian oil facility on Tuesday night, far from the country's borders. Neither Ukrainian nor Russian authorities verified the incident as an attack, though Russian outlets said drones were seen near the oil facility, run by government-controlled oil giant Rosneft. Russia's Ministry of Defence said that there was a drone attack on a site in Krasnodar, though it claimed to have foiled it. "One where NATO is allegedly directly helping Ukraine to attack Russia." AXA’s fling with Monte Paschi ends on high note
  + stars: | 2023-02-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
With its 200-million-euro investment in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI), the French insurer was one of the largest backers of a crucial 2.5-billion-euro capital increase that the hard-beaten lender secured in November. For AXA, supporting the cash call was instrumental to protect its existing insurance distribution partnership with Monte Paschi. The French insurer said on Tuesday it had sold 100 million shares, nearly 8% of Monte Paschi’s total, at 2.33 euros each, pocketing 233 million euros. That’s a 17% gain from the 200 million euros it invested in the cash call. Monte Paschi’s recent strong share-price performance has in any case more to do with the improved economic outlook in Europe and rising interest rates than with any merit of its own.
Strategists across Wall Street are warning stocks are in for more pain, despite the strong start to 2023. Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson compared investors buying stocks now with ill-prepared climbers on Mount Everest. Here's what experts at some of the biggest banks are saying about what's ahead for stocks. WHEN LUKE VACHON attended a formal wedding in Hudson, N.Y., a few months ago, he jilted the blah black tux. Instead of wearing a predictable 007-style ensemble like most male guests, the Montreal marketing director, 32, shrugged a relaxed-fit, desert-brown suit over a black linen polo. “It wasn’t my wedding, it wasn’t my moment, but I wanted to be a little different without making a scene,” he said. If you’ve attended a dressy event lately, chances are you’ve spotted guys like Mr. Vachon, who are challenging the tedium of formal attire without going OTT. But starved of dress-up opportunities during Covid, and uninspired by before-times conformity, more guys are thinking outside the tux.

‘The Ship Beneath the Ice’ Review: Endurance Found

One of the best adventure books ever written begins with a failure. “The order to abandon ship was given at 5 p.m.” So opens Alfred Lansing’s “Endurance” (1959), the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 attempt to sail to Antarctica and cross it on foot. The eponymous ship was trapped in ice for nine months and eventually sank after being crushed by the pack. But in the Antarctic—here was a burden which challenged every atom of his strength.” His leadership and willpower kept the men’s resolve intact through months of suffering, yet his optimism faltered after the loss of the Endurance. In his diary, Shackleton recorded the ship’s sinking and then the simple line, “I cannot write about it.”
THESE DAYS, when the weather turns frosty and the skies are clear, my son and I throw our blades into the back seat and drive north from Brooklyn, ready for the hunt. Our quarry? Not wildlife. Our mission isn’t as daring as it might sound. “Wild ice” is just newfangled slang for what’s been a fixture of northern climes for millennia: natural ice, unmanicured by man or machines, that forms atop lakes, rivers, marshes and more when temperatures plummet.
