Nearly three-quarters of CEOs call generative AI a "top investing priority," according to a recent survey conducted by KPMG, an international professional services network. They're spending on AI in the hopes of increased profitability, innovation and security for their companies, respondents said. More than half of the survey's participants said they're spending more money on new technology than training current employees. The average job posting involving generative AI skills offers a $138,232 salary, says a September report from job search platform Adzuna.

As businesses implement AI in hiring, they must earn and maintain the trust that these processes are working as they should. In partnership with companies including Amazon, Unilever, Koch Industries and Microsoft, the principles address transparency, fairness, non-discrimination, technical robustness, safety, governance and accountability with the use of AI in hiring. Meanwhile, the protocols specify the criteria for third-party AI vendor certification to promote accountability beyond the employer. He cited the potential implications of a video interview, where AI technology could collect data about a candidate's voice, inflection and eye movements. Ultimately, he says communication and consent for reasonable use are two best practices for AI in hiring that employers shouldn't skip.

The updates include the addition of memory storage to its developer tools for using AI models. The new features are expected to be rolled out at OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference in San Francisco on November 6, sources said. Keeping developers happy has been a major focus for OpenAI, these sources told Reuters. Earlier this year, the company rushed to release ChatGPT plugins, add-on tools that allow developers to create applications within ChatGPT. Earlier this year, Altman admitted to a group of developers in London that plugins have not gained market traction.

George Hinton voiced some alarming concerns about AI in a "60 Minutes" interview. The AI "godfather" says the tech is learning better than humans — and has the potential to do bad. AdvertisementAdvertisementAll that AI is missing now, Hinton said, is the self-awareness to know how to use its intelligence to manipulate humans. They'll know how to do it"And of course, there's the concern of using AI to replace people in jobs, generate fake news, and unintended bias going undetected. He recently expressed regret for his role in advancing AI, but said on "60 Minutes" he had no regrets for the good it can do.

The EU may be the first to enact generative AI regulation. The EU is likely to be the first region to enact some form of oversight or regulation around generative AI. The European Commission, which includes two dozen countries, is in late-stage negotiations over the AI Act, which it dubbed "the world's first rules on AI." Some AI tools could be banned in EuropeThe Act was first proposed in 2021, before OpenAI released its generative AI tools ChatGPT and DALL-E, leading the likes of Meta, Google, and Microsoft, to become public players in and leading proponents of generative AI. That one requirement could be enough to keep consumer-level generative AI out of China almost entirely.

China News Service | China News Service | Getty ImagesBEIJING — Chinese authorities are signaling a softer stance on once-stringent data rules, among recent moves to ease regulation for business, especially foreign ones. But foreign businesses have found it difficult to comply — if not operate — due to vague wording on terms such as "important data." The country's top executive body, the State Council, in August revealed a 24-point plan for supporting foreign business operations in the country. The text included a call to reduce the frequency of random inspections for companies with low credit risk, and promoting data flows with "green channels" for certain foreign businesses. When U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visited China in August, she called for more action to improve predictability for U.S. businesses in China.

Microsoft, Meta, and more are touting AI assistants that are far more advanced than Siri and Alexa. These AI assistants have the potential to deal with tedious digital tasks, or "crapmin." From Microsoft to Meta, tech companies leading the charge in AI are starting to make clear what the future of AI looks like to them. Meta's AI assistant "surfaces options directly in the chat, so you can decide as a group which location to explore." Letting an AI assistant take care of all aspects of our "crapmin" will require a lot of confidence in its capabilities.

Mira Murati wasn't always sure OpenAI's generative chatbot ChatGPT was going to be the sensation it has become. "In 2019, we had GPT3, and there was the first time that we had AI systems that kind of showed some sense of language understanding. And if you really think about it, that hasn't really been revolutionized in decades." Murati envisions users being able to talk with ChatGPT the same way they might chat with a friend or a colleague. "And so that's really where we're going — towards these systems that will eventually be able to help us with extremely hard problems.

Plenty of companies are experimenting with the technology, called generative A.I., but they are worried about how confidential data will be handled, the accuracy of A.I.-generated answers and potential legal liability. IBM on Thursday announced its campaign to ease customers’ qualms. The company said it would indemnify companies against copyright or other intellectual property claims for using its generative A.I. IBM will also publish its data sets — the underlying data that is used to build or “train” the A.I. system — which is not standard practice among commercial providers of generative A.I.

Meta's AI initiatives are likely to be a key aspect of how it monetizes products and services going forward, while bringing more users and customers into the AI fold. Whereas Meta's headset is priced for mass-market adoption, Apple's headset is clearly a premium device targeted to those who demand the most cutting-edge technology — such as micro-OLED lenses with eye-tracking capabilities . Similarly, JMP Securities argued that the event "highlights Meta's AI tailwinds," which could "unlock additional advertising budgets with new chat-based customer service." Meanwhile, we expect adoption of Meta's Quest 3 hardware to grow. But the integration of the Meta AI assistant into that platform should ultimately make the glasses a more valuable product over time.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg talked to Verge about the "huge need" for AI versions of celebrities. AdvertisementAdvertisementMeta CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinks there's a "huge need" for AI versions of celebrities for fans to interact with. However, Zuckerberg said AI versions of celebrities could be "more of a 'next year' thing" due to brand safety concerns — as celebrities would want to be certain their image won't be used to make problematic statements. However, not everybody is as optimistic as Zuckerberg and Grimes about the potential of AI in the media. Zuckerberg and Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider, sent outside regular business hours.

A digital artwork by Chinese artist Snow Fish. The controversy has fueled online protests on the Chinese internet against the creation and use of AI-generated images, with several other artists claiming their works had been similarly used without their knowledge. Hundreds of artists have posted banners on Xiaohongshu saying “No to AI-generated images,” while a related hashtag has been viewed more than 35 million times on the Chinese Twitter-like platform Weibo. Besides Trik AI, Xiaohongshu has also developed a new function called “Ci Ke” which allows users to post content using AI-generated images. Snow Fish added that these complaints had been slowly growing within the artist community but had mostly been privately shared rather than openly protested.

Announcements at Meta Connect, Meta's biggest event of the year, will indicate how Zuckerberg plans to navigate the shift this year of investor fervor to artificial intelligence from augmented and virtual reality technologies. Developers will be watching to assess what apps they might create for Meta's latest hardware devices, such as a new Quest virtual reality headset due out this fall. The Wall Street Journal initially reported the plan to announce generative AI chatbots at Connect. Just before the event, Meta said it was delivering on a plan announced early last year to roll out mobile and web versions of its flagship social VR platform Horizon Worlds. It also quietly added legs to its previously upper-body-only virtual reality avatars, as spotted by industry blog Upload VR.
