☆ Aurélien Quinion: French race-walker sets a personal best after birth of his daughter

Aurélien Quinion, a French race-walker who competed on Thursday, had a dramatically different experience ahead of the 20km final. Quinion instead was at his wife’s bedside at 2 a.m. Paris time as she gave birth to their baby girl, Charlie. The French athlete eventually got about 30 minutes of something approaching sleep before getting in a taxi and heading to the race, less than six hours after Charlie entered the world. In a statement released by the French Athletics Federation, Quinion said mother and daughter were both doing well. Quinion finished ninth in the event, setting a personal best of 1:19:56.

In addition to Mr. Gershkovich, the prisoners freed by Russia included Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine arrested in 2018, and the Russian dissident Ilya Yashin, the official said. The prisoners freed by the West included Vadim Krasikov, a convicted Russian assassin, the Turkish official said. The deal seemed sure to prompt jubilation among Western nations that had condemned the charges against Mr. Gershkovich and others as baseless and politically motivated. And it represented a political leap for Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, whose government agreed to release Mr. Krasikov as part of the deal. LONDON — European markets looked set to maintain positive momentum on Wednesday, with euro zone inflation due and corporate earnings still in focus. On the data front, inflation figures for the euro zone will be published at 10 a.m. London time. It comes after second-quarter gross domestic product for the euro zone came in at 0.3% on Tuesday, slightly higher than expected. In the U.S., the Federal Reserve is expected to keep interest rates steady on Thursday. In Asia, all eyes are on the Bank of Japan as it raised its benchmark interest rate to 0.25% from its previous range of 0% to 0.1% and outlined a plan to taper its bond buying program.
