CNN —A father and several of his family members were convicted of charges in a terrorism and kidnapping case in which his 3-year-old son was found dead on a New Mexico compound, prosecutors said Friday. A federal jury convicted four members of the family Tuesday after their 2018 arrest following a raid at the rural New Mexico compound, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico said in a news release Friday. Officers were searching the compound for 3-year-old Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, who had been abducted by his father, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, from his wife in Georgia, authorities said. Morton was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit kidnapping resulting in death and kidnapping resulting in death, according to the jury sheets. VATICAN CITY (AP) — Two Vatican trials are coming to a head this week and posing uncomfortable questions for the Holy See, given they both underscore Pope Francis’ power as an absolute monarch and the legal, financial and reputational problems that can arise when he wields it. The rationale: The pope hired Milone and then wanted him out, and the court has no right to judge his decisions. For Vatican prosecutors, that amounted to extortion. The Vatican is the lone absolute monarchy left in Europe, with Francis wielding supreme legislative, executive and judicial power. While he delegates that power on a day-to-day basis, he is still pope and what he says goes.

A Trump-supporting social media influencer was sentenced to seven months in prison for conspiring to suppress the votes of possibly thousands of people who supported former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Douglass Mackey, who was 33 when he was convicted in March, was also ordered to pay a $15,000 fine. Mackey made podcast appearances and social media posts about those beliefs, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said that 99% of the texts received by that number were sent after Mackey first posted a deceptive Hillary advertisement from one of his social media accounts. Andrew Frisch, Mackey's attorney, told CNBC he remained "optimistic" about Mackey's prospects on appeal, which has not yet been taken up.

Van der Sloot, 36, was extradited to Alabama in June from a prison in Peru, where he has been serving a 28-year sentence for murdering another woman in Lima. Eyewitnesses said she was last seen leaving a bar in a car with van der Sloot on the night of her disappearance. Van der Sloot has reached a plea deal with U.S. prosecutors that require him to also truthfully disclose what happened to Natalee Holloway, according to John Q. Kelly, a lawyer for the Holloway family. A public defender representing van der Sloot and a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office did not respond to questions about a plea deal. In 2012, van der Sloot was convicted in Peru after he confessed to beating, strangling and suffocating Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student, in May 2010.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa on Monday, Trump called the judge's order "unconstitutional" and vowed to appeal it. "I'll be the only politician in history that runs with a gag order where I'm not allowed to criticize people," Trump told supporters. The order bars Trump, frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and attorneys in the case from personally targeting Special Counsel Jack Smith, prosecutors working with him and court staff. Prosecutors sought a limited gag order that would bar certain statements from Trump during the case. The judge said she would allow Trump to make critical statements about the U.S. Justice Department and that denounce the prosecution as politically motivated.

The bulk of the Trump PAC money went to law firms that have defended Trump against a series of criminal charges or in civil lawsuits. “Well, if the little fish’s lawyer is being paid by the big fish that’s less likely to happen potentially.”The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. That money is earmarked for political and campaign activities, not for legal expenses, according to the campaign. To help pay the legal fees, Trump’s political operation has also moved millions from his super PAC, MAGA Inc. Those concerns are amplified in court records filed by Smith’s team in the Mar-a-Lago case.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A medical waste processing company has pleaded guilty to dozens of environment-related charges and agreed to pay $1.75 million in fines after state prosecutors in Maryland accused a south Baltimore incineration plant owned by the firm of exposing the public to biohazardous material. It’s supposed to be burned into ash before being transported to landfills, a process that prevents disease transmission, state officials said Tuesday at a news conference announcing the settlement agreement involving the nation’s largest medical waste incinerator. The fine incurred by Curtis Bay Energy is among the highest environmental penalties imposed in Maryland’s history. Witnesses provided photographs from the site showing substantial amounts of unburned medical waste, including surgical gloves, medical supplies and bedding, according to court documents. In addition to evidence of unburned medical waste, investigators found the company had knowingly installed an illegal pump that was discharging wastewater onto an adjacent property.

REUTERS/Bing Guan Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Donald Trump on Tuesday filed a notice to appeal a partial gag order in the case accusing the former U.S. President of illegally attempting to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington on Monday barred Trump from making public statements that "target" U.S. prosecutors, court staff and potential witnesses involved in the case. The judge found that Trump's public statements and social media posts may influence witnesses and lead to threats and harassment against lawyers and other "public servants." The gag order allows Trump to continue criticizing the U.S. Justice Department and denounce the prosecution as politically motivated.

Former President Donald Trump's lawyers told a court Tuesday that they are appealing a narrow gag order imposed on him in his federal 2020 election interference case. But Chutkan, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, said Trump can't mount a “smear campaign” against prosecutors and court personnel. At rallies and in social media posts, Trump has repeatedly sought to vilify Smith, other prosecutors, likely witnesses and even the judge. Smith’s team argued that Trump knows that his incendiary remarks could inspire his supporters to threaten or harass his targets. The case, which accuses Trump of scheming to subvert the results of the election, is scheduled to go to trial in March.

“This is not about whether I like the language Mr. Trump uses,” Judge Tanya Chutkan said. Trump will appeal Chutkan’s order, he said in a post on his social media website Truth Social. Following the two federal indictments against the former president, Trump has lashed out against prosecutors, potential witnesses and the judge overseeing the election subversion case in Washington. “When you start to use a word like ‘thug’ to describe a prosecutor doing their job, that wouldn’t be allowed by any other criminal defendant,” Chutkan said. Though limited in scope, the gag order from Judge Tanya Chutkan is likely the biggest limit on the former president’s speech he has ever been handed. Chutkan outlined the order in court and plans to issue a more detailed written order in the coming days. That order bars Trump only from speaking publicly about the court staff in his civil fraud trial. Chutkan also said she believed she could issue a show-cause order, which would require Trump justify why he breached the rules of the gag order. Violations of the gag order may not necessarily need to be raised by prosecutors for Chutkan to impose a penalty, she said.

Trump, as a criminal defendant, "does not have the right to say and do exactly as he pleases," Chutkan said. The exchanges came as U.S. prosecutors sought a court order to limit Trump's public statements about people involved in the case. Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 U.S. election. Molly Gaston, a prosecutor working with Special Counsel Jack Smith, said the order was necessary to prevent Trump from trying the case "in the court of public opinion." "These prosecutors want to prevent President Trump from speaking out on the issues of the day," Lauro told the judge, adding that the case is "inextricably intertwined with campaign issues."

ARRAS, France (AP) — France will mobilize up to 7,000 soldiers to increase security around the country after a teacher was fatally stabbed and three other people wounded in a school attack by a former student suspected of Islamic radicalization, the president’s office said Saturday. Counterterrorism authorities are investigating the stabbing, and the suspected assailant and several others are in custody, prosecutors said. The suspect is a Chechen who had attended the school and had been under recent surveillance by intelligence services for radicalization. The “Attack Emergency” threat posture allows the government to temporarily mobilize the military to protect public places among other measures. For many in France, the attack echoed the killing of another teacher, Samuel Paty, almost exactly three years ago near his Paris area school.
