CVS and Walgreens pharmacy staff begin 3-day walkout
  + stars: | 2023-10-30 | by ( Nicole Goodkind | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Walgreens and CVS employees are mostly not unionized, which makes a largescale walkout difficult to execute. Workers at Walgreens and CVS have previously staged walkouts in Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts and Oregon in September and early October. During prior walkouts, pharmacy staff feared retaliation from their bosses and corporate leadership, said Jerominski. A spokesperson from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) told CNN on Sunday that it supports the organizers planning a walkout and protests. “UFCW members and staff have been communicating with many of the CVS and Walgreens workers who have been taking actions to stand up for their rights on the job.

The company's ongoing efforts are focused on how it can recruit, retain and reward pharmacy staff, the spokesperson said. CVS pharmacists make $61.44 an hour on average, while Walgreens pharmacists make $53.85 per hour on average, according to employment website Indeed. However, some Walgreens pharmacy staff told CNBC that the company continues to push their stores to hit performance goals for tasks like verifying prescriptions. IAM Healthcare did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while UFCW has expressed its support for the recent walkouts staged by Walgreens and CVS pharmacy staff. Known as a passionate and provocative theater advocate who pushed for boundary-breaking works and for classics to be adventurously modernized, Brustein founded both the Yale Repertory Theatre and the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. He was dean of the Yale School of Drama from 1966-1979 and during that time founded the Yale Repertory Theatre. “They'll have an unresolved experience.”After a painful, highly publicized dismissal from Yale, Brustein in 1979 switched to Harvard, where he taught English and founded the American Repertory Theatre in 1980. At both Yale Rep and A.R.T., Brustein told The Boston Globe in 2012, he embraced popular theater with a nationalistic streak: “We were trying to liberate American theater from its British overseers. LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Friends” star Matthew Perry, the Emmy-nominated actor whose sarcastic, but lovable Chandler Bing was among television’s most famous and most quotable characters, has died at 54. “Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Those investments include enabling teams to schedule additional support as needed, enhancing pharmacist and technician recruitment and hiring and strengthening pharmacy technician training, according to the spokesperson. The pharmacist typically begins the shift by completing several paperwork tasks, which take about five to 10 minutes. The pharmacist and a pharmacy technician then juggle administering shots with several other tasks. The technician typically handles the first part of that task, which involves processing new prescription orders from doctors. One CVS pharmacy technician said they typically come to their store location at 7:50 a.m., 10 minutes before their eight-hour shift starts.

Shares of the Armonk, New York-based company rose 2% in trading after the bell. While the company has seen a slowdown in the growth of its overall business compared to last year, it reiterated its annual target for revenue growth and free-cash-flow generation. Revenue at its software segment, which now includes newly acquired IT budgeting software maker Apptio, rose nearly 8%, excluding the impact from a strong dollar. (AP) — The Biden administration is designating 31 technology hubs touching 32 states and Puerto Rico to help spur innovation and create jobs in the industries that are concentrated in these areas. President Joe Biden is set to announce the hubs on Monday at the White House with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The tech hubs are the result of a process Raimondo's department launched in May to distribute a total of $500 million in grants to cities. The White House has sought to elevate that message and highlight Biden's related policies as the Democratic president undertakes his 2024 reelection bid. “These Tech Hubs will catalyze investment in technologies critical to economic growth, national security, and job creation, and will help communities across the country become centers of innovation critical to American competitiveness,” the White House said Monday in an emailed statement.

The creation of the tech hubs was authorized through the CHIPS and Science Act, which Biden signed into law last year. Raimondo in May announced the launch of the tech hub program with the aim of dispersing $500 million in grants. Tech hubs are going to bring this work to where people live in communities all across America." The hubs are focused on fostering innovation across industries including clean energy, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, medicine, quantum computing and critical minerals. "These tech hubs will be transformational and they're a part of a long line of transformational investment we've made since I took office," Biden said.

It is the rare night I fall asleep before turning a few pages of a book. So, I was quite surprised to find myself immersed in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache novels, all 18 of them. Knowing that I would not run out of books, no matter how many sleepless nights I might be facing, calmed me. NEW YORK, Oct 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Wall Streeters are trying to teach universities a lesson, but may provide them with a broader understanding of economics instead. The median family income for Harvard students is nearly $169,000, or about 2.5 times the U.S. average. Stockpiles of cash donated by Rowan, Ackman and other alumni also should theoretically make such institutions more accessible, but haven’t. Elite universities funnel many graduates to lucrative careers in finance and consulting, and studies have shown that social class often predetermines success. Ideally, Ivory Towers would price education closer to its actual value rather than what people are willing to pay.

America’s Debt Crisis Burns While Congress Fiddles

Last month, the Penn Wharton Budget Model from the University of Pennsylvania came out with an analysis of the debt crisis entitled “When Does Federal Debt Reach Unsustainable Levels?”Their answer? The concern is that punting the problem into the future, continuing to raise debt even as interest rates rise further or hold at higher levels for longer, the debt will grow even faster in a “snowball” scenario. Similar proposals have been offered over the years but at the same time they seem to lack political support – indeed, Republicans have recently voiced the idea of cutting Social Security. The debt crisis is rapidly worsening at a time when the bond market is having its own set of problems. A recent government auction of debt, an occurrence that is becoming more common as the U.S. borrows more, saw weak demand.
