In explaining our psychological troubles, van der Kolk highlights the role of what can loosely be labeled the primal regions of the brain, along with that of the body. The book has a certain kind of romantic appeal; it restores us to the natural world, to the animal kingdom. But while van der Kolk’s readership is vast, he is probably not the most essential figure in the somatic therapy movement. And beyond modern credit for its concepts, somatic therapy owes a debt to timeless practices like mindfulness and meditation.) Van der Kolk’s best-seller-dom and Levine’s legion of new practitioners speak to a current yearning for the holistic.

CNN —North Carolina’s Republican-led General Assembly moved Tuesday to ban most abortions after 12 weeks, voting to override a veto from Democratic Gov. The state House voted 72-48 along party lines hours after the state Senate voted 30-20 to do the same. A three-fifths vote in both chambers, where Republicans hold supermajorities, was needed to override the governor’s previous rejection of the measure. “We are going to have to kick it into an even higher gear when that veto stamp comes down. Cotham, who had campaigned in favor of abortion rights as a Democrat and sponsored legislation earlier in the legislative session to codify Roe v. Wade, was one of the Republicans who voted for the abortion ban.

The European Commission approved the deal on Monday morning. The announcement came just three weeks after the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority issued a surprise ruling against the proposed merger.

Nvidia’s H100 data-center processor got a shout-out at a Google conference last week. Photo: GoogleGoogle’s ambitious plans for generative artificial intelligence announced last week were great news for one chip maker. During a two-hour long presentation at its I/O developers conference on Wednesday, Google took pains to point out its use of Nvidia ’s H100, a high-end data center processor that the chip maker began shipping only earlier this year. No other chip makers or data-center component suppliers got such a shout-out. Again, no other chip maker was mentioned.

Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger is trying to make good on the promise to sharply improve the economics of streaming. Photo: MARIO ANZUONI/REUTERSWhen Bob Iger said Disney was no longer going to chase subscribers at the expense of profits, he wasn’t kidding. Disney’s fiscal second-quarter results Wednesday afternoon contained a couple surprises for the company’s streaming business. That segment generated an operating loss of $659 million—nearly $200 million less than Wall Street had expected and way better than the $1 billion torched by that unit three months prior.

This imperfect storm suits the Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) CEO’s investing style. Underwriters in the state have been feverishly trying to offload risk following last year’s Category 5 hurricane that was Florida’s deadliest in nearly 90 years. The upside is several billion dollars, Jain said, if Mother Nature turns out to be more forgiving. “If the big hurricane happens in Florida, we could lose – across all the units, we could lose as much as $15 billion. And if there isn’t a loss, we’ll make several billion dollars as profit,” Jain said during Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting in Omaha.

City's victory, coupled with an Arsenal loss on Sunday to Newcastle United, would all but clinch the Premier League title for the treble-chasers who stretched their winning league run to 10 games. Liverpool notched up a sixth straight Premier League win to maintain their pursuit of a top-four spot. KANE HEADERKane headed Tottenham in front in first-half injury time to move up to second place in the all-time Premier League goalscorers list. The win vaulted Spurs to sixth in the table with 57 points from 35 games, six points behind fourth-placed United, who have played two games fewer. Wolves climbed 10 points clear of the relegation zone with 40 points, while Villa remained in eighth after their second consecutive loss.
While Hollywood deals with the first TV and movie writers’ strike in 15 years, the wealth of content that we have available to us is a good reminder of the creativity those writers have put into making the shows and movies we love. Something to sip on…Corey Mylchreest as Young King George, India Amarteifio as Young Queen Charlotte in episode 101 of "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." Liam Daniel/NetflixOne of the reasons the strike is even happening is because streaming has changed the entertainment industry so much that writers say their wages are being adversely affected through shorter seasons and changing distribution models. Those individuals can’t work – and some of our favorite shows will be delayed – unless writers and studios reach a new agreement soon. In the meantime, catch up on some brilliant shows you’ve missed.

Apple reported higher iPhone revenue for the company’s latest quarter. Photo: Ringo Chiu/Zuma PressApple Inc. managed to sell a decent number of iPhones this winter. That was hardly a foregone conclusion. Revenue from the popular smartphone family rose 2% year over year to $51.3 billion for Apple’s fiscal second quarter, which the company reported on Thursday—a pleasant surprise for investors, as Wall Street had been predicting a 4% decline. And because the iPhone still drives more than half of Apple’s top line, the upside was enough to bring the company’s total revenue to $94.8 billion, which was about 2% ahead of analysts’ estimates.

Photo: Christian Black/Paramount/Everett CollectionThe media giant behind the “Mission Impossible” franchise has been facing one of its own: how to pay for an expensive pivot to streaming long past the time when investors were willing to write blank checks for that. Now Paramount Global ’s checks to investors won’t be nearly as large as they used to be. The company announced a “dividend modification” with its first-quarter results Thursday morning. That modification—a 79% cut to what the company had been paying—will help it conserve $500 million in cash annually.

A shopper carries a bag of Nike merchandise along the Magnificent Mile shopping district on December 21, 2022 in Chicago, Illinois. WASHINGTON — A House committee examining the U.S. government's economic relationship with China is asking some of the world's largest clothing companies for information about the use of forced labor during production — a potential violation of U.S. trade law. Lawmakers asked retailers Temu, Shein, Nike and Adidas North America about the use of materials and labor sourced from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region of China, according to letters sent to company leaders on Tuesday. Such practices would constitute violations of the 2021 Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, according to the lawmakers. The inquiries also follow a March hearing of the committee that included an expert assessment finding that U.S. companies finance "state-sponsored forced labor programs in the Uyghur region."

A Microsoft takeover of Activision Blizzard would give the Xbox maker control of the ‘Call of Duty’ videogame franchise. Photo: CARLO ALLEGRI/REUTERSCloud gaming is barely an actual business yet, but U.K. regulators want to make sure Microsoft never owns it. Their reasoning carries far greater implications than a deal that would give the Xbox maker control of “Call of Duty.”Microsoft says it plans to appeal the ruling last week from the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA, to block the company’s $75 billion takeover of Activision Blizzard . The decision was a major surprise given earlier signs that suggested the agency was leaning in favor of letting the deal go through. The agency said it wanted to prevent the deal “to protect innovation and choice in cloud gaming,” a market that it predicts will be worth about one billion pounds—or roughly $1.25 billion—annually by 2026.
