South Korea’s military says North Korea is again flying balloons likely carrying trash toward the South, adding to a bizarre psychological warfare campaign amid growing tensions between the war-divided rivals. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Saturday that the winds could carry the balloons to regions north of the South Korean capital, Seoul. North Korea last flew balloons toward the South on July 24, when trash carried by at least one of them fell on the South Korean presidential compound, raising worries about the vulnerability of key South Korean facilities. CNN —Cold case investigators have arrested a 55-year-old woman in North Carolina in connection with the death of a newborn girl found in a California dumpster 37 years ago, according to the Riverside Police Department. Through DNA testing, detectives identified the baby’s mother as Melissa Jean Allen Avila, police said in a Thursday news release. Police did not provide any further details for the time being. The evacuation comes few hours before the Paris 2024 Olympics closing ceremony takes place at the Stade de France. People have been caught climbing the 324 meter (1,062 feet) tall tower before. In 2019, the tower was evacuated after a man climbed up its side, and three people were spotted climbing the landmark in 2015.

A 22-year-old Brooklyn man was charged with assault as a hate crime after the police said he yelled “Free Palestine” and “Do you want to die?” before stabbing a young man near a synagogue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn early Saturday morning. The 22-year-old man, Vincent Sumpter, was charged with second-degree assault as a hate crime in the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday on Kingston Avenue, around the corner from the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement on Eastern Parkway. Rabbi Behrman said that Mr. Dabrowskin, who is Jewish and about 30 years old, was taken to Maimonides Medical Center and was expected to recover from his wounds. “This is obviously a very serious incident, and there has been a lot of antisemitic rhetoric,” Rabbi Behrman said. “I’m concerned that unless this rhetoric stops, it’s going to become more common, sadly.”

In the predawn hours on a Sunday in late July, members of one of Haiti’s largest armed gangs attacked the town of Ganthier, about 25 miles east of the capital and on a road that the authorities say is used to smuggle weapons. When police reinforcements arrived in armored vehicles hours later, officers found the streets deserted, the gang members having left after destroying Ganthier’s police station and torturing and killing several residents, according to the town’s mayor and the police. “The whole town of Ganthier is emptied; there is no one left,” the mayor, Jean Vilonor Victor, told The New York Times. Weeks after the arrival of a United Nations-backed international security force in Haiti, the gangs who have brought the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other regions in the country to their knees show no signs of letting up.

— A Ferguson, Missouri, police officer was critically injured outside the city’s police station during protests on the 10th anniversary of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, a pivotal moment in the national Black Lives Matter movement, police said Saturday. Ferguson police chief Troy Doyle said Officer Travis Brown suffered a severe brain injury Friday after being knocked to the ground. Two other officers also were hurt, one sustaining an ankle injury and another an abrasion. Doyle said Travis Brown started with the department in January and previously worked for the St. Louis County Police Department. A man arrested in May after he was accused of fatally punching a 67-year-old driver in a road rage incident has now been charged in the murder of a beloved Detroit neurosurgeon found dead in his home last year. Desmond Burks, 34, was charged this week with first-degree murder, felony murder, larceny and other crimes in the April 2023 shooting of Dr. Devon Hoover. The murder rocked the community, and many people including former patients, family members and friends expressed their shock and grief. A Facebook page titled “Justice for Dr. Devon Hoover” was inundated with memories of the doctor. When authorities charged Burks in Hoover’s death, he had already been in jail on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Reda Saleh.
