Nike said Friday it was suspending its relationship with Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving and will not release a new shoe named after him following controversy over a post linking to an antisemitic movie. Nike said the suspension is effectively immediately and the company will no longer launch the Kyrie 8 shoe. “At Nike, we believe there is no place for hate speech and we condemn any form of antisemitism,” Nike said in a statement. Irving, 30, has had several Nike shoes that bear his name, including the Kyrie 7, which launched in 2020. “Accordingly, we are of the view that he is currently unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets.”

When NFL owners and executives huddled earlier this month, one of the items on the agenda was exploring the roots of a potentially troubling trend. Scoring this season is down, and they couldn’t come up with a sound reason for why that is. “Every statistical look that we’ve made, I’m not sure that we’ve found a good answer,” said Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, who chairs the league’s competition committee.
CNN —On the eve of Halloween, Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers’ nightmare season went to a new level of scary as they lost 27-17 on Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills. The defeat is the Packers’ fourth straight loss, as they slip to 3-5 for the season. Rodgers threw for 203 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while running back Aaron Jones continued his excellent season as he added 143 yards on the ground. However, the Packers defense once again struggled and could not withstand potential MVP candidate Josh Allen for the whole game. However, after the defeat – in which Green Bay were down 24-7 at halftime – Rodgers was more measured in his response.
The Seahawks have won three of their last four while the Giants are on a four-game win streak. CNN —The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Houston Astros in dramatic fashion Friday night to take Game 1 of the World Series 6-5 in extras. “The way we fought back in that game after being down 5-0, that is a Phillies win right there,” Realmuto said. Verlander, a likely future hall of famer, remains winless as a starter in the World Series in his stellar career. The Astros’ only previous World Series win came when they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017. A Phillies series win would give the franchise its third World Series title, with its last coming back in 2008.
CNN —The Portland Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current to win the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League championship on Saturday. The 2-0 victory at the Audi Field in Washington DC gives the Thorns their third championship in team history. Portland had an early lead during Saturday’s game with Thorns striker Sophia Smith scoring the first goal four minutes into the match. The 22-year-old Smith became the youngest regular-season MVP in NWSL history this season. In the second half, Kansas City’s Addisyn Merrick netted an own goal to extend Portland’s lead.
If people don’t know Lo’eau LaBonta as a soccer player, they might have seen her theatrical work. The 29-year-old midfielder for the National Women’s Soccer League’s Kansas City Current broke out this season by knocking in a career-high eight goals—followed by funny, joyful celebrations that have earned her the nickname “Celly Queen.” Chief among them was an August sequence in which LaBonta nailed a penalty kick, faked a hamstring injury, then miraculously recovered and started twerking—a moment now captured on T-shirts.
CNN —The Houston Astros are once again heading for the World Series after sweeping the New York Yankees in the best-of-four League Championship Series. Philadelphia advanced to its first World Series since 2009 and looks for its first championship since 2008. The Astros will return to Fall Classic for the fourth time since 2017, looking to make amends for a loss in last year’s World Series. Georgia Republicans, including Kemp, have tied Abrams to the MLB’s decision, but there is no evidence that Abrams advocated for the All-Star Game to be moved out of the state. Following the passage of the bill, the MLB decided to relocate the All-Star Game out of Cobb County in Atlanta on April 2, 2021 (here). Kemp said in a July 2021 campaign ad titled “Not Backing Down” that “Abrams and the liberal mob forced the All-Star Game to move” (here). NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - When it comes to modern corporate sagas, few deliver the drama between Walt Disney (DIS.N) and Comcast (CMCSA.O). The National Football League's design for Hispanic Heritage Month is far from a touchdown. At least, that's according to Twitter users who have relentlessly mocked the design of the NFL's campaign to celebrate Hispanic and Latino players. In a tweet posted on Thursday, the NFL shared an image for the “Por La Cultura” campaign. "This shield integrates unmistakable Latin flavor and is fundamental to our always-on, 365-day initiative," read an image posted by the NFL describing the Hispanic Heritage Month shield. The NFL said its month-long campaign "highlights Latino players, coaches and staff, celebrates Latino excellence and tells authentic stories of the community."
