Alcaraz needs new rivals for a new era

Certainly the prospect of another showdown at the U.S. Open in a few weeks is exciting, but whether or not 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic can stretch his career long enough to battle Alcaraz on a regular basis is questionable. 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said after Alcaraz ended Djokovic's 34-match winning run at the grasscourt slam. Italian Jannik Sinner, 21, beat Alcaraz at last year's Wimbledon but has reached only one Grand Slam semi-final so far, losing to Djokovic in straight sets last week. Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, was outclassed by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semi-final, lasting less than two hours on Centre Court. Between them they won 65 Grand Slam titles and it has to be hoped that Alcaraz finds a couple of adversaries to share the load as tennis moves into a new era.

Photo: John Walton/PA/Associated PressWIMBLEDON, England—Days before the Wimbledon men’s final, Novak Djokovic stood on Centre Court and announced that he was still waiting for the next crop of young players to come and challenge him. Djokovic was 36 years old, a 23-time major winner and seemingly still at the height of his powers. “They want to win,” he joked, “but it ain’t happening.”

Of course, he did, because you do not have 23 Grand Slam titles in the bank by ducking a fight in moments of crisis. Young pretenders have repeatedly tried and failed to take Djokovic down at Wimbledon -- Matteo Berrettini in the 2021 final and Nick Kyrgios last year. That he did it with Djokovic still at the peak of his powers and halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam, made it feel like a seismic moment in men's tennis. "I've won some epic finals that I was close to losing so it's fair and square," Djokovic, who saved match points when beating Roger Federer in 2019, told reporters. The bull-like Spaniard, playing only his second Grand Slam final compared to Djokovic's record 35, might have folded after being schooled by the master in a 34-minute opening set.

LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic has experienced everything possible on a tennis court during his trophy-laden 23-year career but said he has never faced a player quite like Carlos Alcaraz. "I didn't expect him to play so well this year on grass, but he's proven he's the best player in the world," Djokovic said after his 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 defeat. I think he's got some nice sliding backhands, some similarities with my backhands. After outplaying Alcaraz in a one-sided first set, Djokovic then slugged out an 85-minute second and had a point for a two-set lead in the tiebreak but dumped a backhand into the net. "Set point, I missed the backhand.

It's great to win ... making history in this beautiful tournament," Alcaraz said as he cradled the trophy during the presentation ceremony. [1/7]Spain's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates with the trophy after winning his final match against Serbia's Novak Djokovic. At 3-3, Djokovic was left rolling on the turf after he stumbled over while chasing down one such effort. The chants of "Carlos, Carlos, Carlos" rose to a crescendo when, at 3-1 up in the third set, Alcaraz stretched Djokovic to 13 deuces before finally breaking on his seventh break point in a mental and physical battle that dragged on for 26 minutes. "You played maybe once or twice before this year's Wimbledon on grass and it's amazing just what you did."

With the driving force of a forehand winner, Novak Djokovic slammed his racket into a net post, then quickly picked up the twisted wreckage and sat down. It was an uncharacteristic outburst of rage from the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, and it seemed to be about more than the point he had just lost. Djokovic, who fully expected to win Wimbledon on Sunday, and perhaps a few more times in the coming years, appeared to be gaining a realization in that moment: His singular dominance of the men’s tennis tour in recent years may be over. Carlos Alcaraz, the 20-year-old Spaniard, was demonstrating incredible mental strength and tennis skill in a five-set gem, and an enticing new rivalry was being born. “Ha, I hope so,” Djokovic, the 36-year-old Serb, said with a laugh.

But a starter kit, as the name suggests, is only a sartorial starting point. Others used sweaters as an accessory of sorts, draping them over their shoulders or tying them across their bodies or around their waists. Wimbledon is known for requiring athletes to wear white. Most spectators’ outfits included at least one white element, too — often, white tennis shoes. And it wouldn’t be a British tennis tournament without more than a few smart-looking hats.

The Wimbledon title is the grand slam she wants more than any other, but for the second successive year, Jabeur had to settle for the runners up trophy. Asked what the Princess of Wales told her in that moment, Jabeur told reporters: “Same thing after last year: to encourage me to be strong, to come back and win a grand slam, win a Wimbledon. The last unseeded woman to reach a Wimbledon final was Billie Jean King in 1963. Playing in her second grand slam final, the 24-year-old Czech played brilliantly on the grass and her variety of shots got the better of the sixth seed Jabeur. I think it was the most impossible grand slam for me to win, so I didn’t even think of it.

The age gap between the two was the widest in any men's Slam final since 1974. Still, this is all relatively new to him: Djokovic's record 35th Grand Slam final was Alcaraz's second. Yet it was Alcaraz who won a 32-pointCarlos Alcaraz said he wanted another shot at Novak Djokovic. The age gap between the two was the widest in any men's Slam final since 1974. After years of false starts, men’s tennis finally has a proper war between the generations. Besides chasing the Grand Slam, Djokovic was aiming to extinguish the dreams of another heralded upstart challenging his hold on the game, which, so far, has amounted to 23 Grand Slam tournament titles. Alcaraz won the U.S. Open last year in thrilling, acrobatic fashion, serving notice that men’s tennis was going to be shaken up by an unusual talent. This year, he withdrew from the Australian Open to nurse an injury and was defeated by Djokovic in the semifinals at the French Open. “It’s great for the new generation,” Alcaraz said, “to see me beating him and making them think that they are capable to do it.”

July 16 (Reuters) - Henry Searle ended Britain's 61-year wait for a boys' singles title at Wimbledon when he beat Russian fifth seed Yaroslav Demin 6-4 6-4 in the final on Sunday. Searle, who fired nine aces and 22 winners to wrap up the win in 83 minutes, claimed the title without dropping a set in the tournament. "It's amazing to play on Court One," said the 17-year-old Searle, who beat four seeded players en route to the title.
