Trump's lawyers likened him to astronomer Galileo Galilei in a court filing on Monday. In the legal brief, Trump's lawyers argued that like Galileo, Trump believes in his own truths. Trump's team is arguing that it is "correct or at least debatable" that several of Trump's conspiracy theories are accurate. These theories include the baseless claim that the 2020 election was "stolen" from the former president, per Trump's lawyers. The lawsuit was thrown out in May, but Trump's team is attempting to revive the case, citing "overtly partisan censorship."
For the world leaders meeting with Biden over the next week, there’s no assurance that he'll be the president they’ll be dealing with for the next six years. The U.S. is unnerved by Chinese military exercises that threaten Taiwan and raise the specter of a future invasion. “Tuesday was a good day for America, a good day for democracy,” Biden said Thursday at a Democratic National Committee event. Another reason that Biden might find the trip more gratifying is that he averted the midterm wipeout that sitting presidents normally endure. Biden’s midterm test went much better.
Matt Gaetz blasted several top GOP leaders as vote counts for the midterms draw to a close. McFailure," tweet Gaetz, meaning Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. Gaetz's tweet laid part of the blame on McCarthy, McConnell, and McDaniel. McDaniel has publicly had warmer ties with Trump in recent years than McConnell and McCarthy. Nor did representatives for McCarthy, McConnell, and McDaniel.
Recent Salesforce layoffs impacted salespeople, insiders say. Salesforce insiders say the company set up its own salesforce for failure ahead of layoffs by using a quota system that penalized top performers with unrealistic goals and difficult accounts. "Our sales performance process drives accountability," a Salesforce spokesperson said in a statement provided to Insider. Marc Benioff SalesforceSalespeople describe a stretch-goal quota systemInsiders say the system Salesforce used to evaluate individual sales performance often gave even top salespeople unrealistic goals. When sales momentum slowed this year, Salesforce reacted first with a hiring slowdown, as Insider reported, and now with layoffs.
The preliminary targets for 2023 corn and soy plantings and yields resemble the year-ago estimates. A year ago, USDA’s 2022 corn and soy acreages started at 92 million and 87.5 million as corn prices were favorable versus soybeans, but high input costs perhaps prevented an aggressive corn estimate. CBOT November soybeans to December cornBut 2022 corn acres fell well short of expectations starting with March intentions, likely because the trade was overestimating the number of available row crop acres. 2023 YIELDSFocus will soon shift to 2023, and USDA’s corn trend yield of 181.5 bpa could already be labeled as controversial. But just for fun, the agency exactly 10 years ago slated 2022 corn yield at 181, the same number shown a year ago.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine said Christmas can now be celebrated on December 25. It previously marked Christmas on January 7, alongside the Russian Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine announced that its assembly had voted in favor of letting parishes choose whether to mark Christmas on December 25. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine is distinct from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with the latter maintaining ties to Moscow until recently, The Guardian noted. Russia's Orthodox Church has supported Russia's war in Ukraine, with its leader saying in September that dying against Ukraine is an act of "sacrifice" that absolves soldiers of their sins.
Acts of stochastic terrorism appear to be on the rise, according to extremism experts. The "lone-wolf" nature of the assault in conjunction with the suspect's stated motivation suggests the incident could be an example of stochastic terrorism, according to extremism experts. While stochastic terrorism is not a new phenomenon, its stark prevalence in global society at the moment is a more recent development, he added. "It's quite mainstream," Spaaij said, of stochastic terrorism. But what makes the violence stochastic, he added, is "we don't know where or when."

LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - European Union member states have backed a temporary watering down and two-year delay to 2025 for the final leg of the globally agreed Basel III bank capital rules, the Czech EU presidency said on Tuesday. EU states will now negotiate a final deal with the European Parliament in early 2023. Most of the Basel III rules, a set of tougher capital rules for banks after the global financial crisis more than a decade ago, have already been implemented. EU ministers backed a two-year delay to the start date for rolling out the final rules, pushing it back to January, 2025. Smaller banks would benefit from simpler disclosure, and EU states pushed back against attempts at stricter EU harmonisation in checking whether top bank staff are 'fit and proper'.
BRASILIA, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Brazil's central bank opened on Monday a public consultation on changes to calculate capital requirements related to operational risk for financial institutions, scheduled to enter into force on Jan. 1, 2024. The proposal, which will be open for suggestions for 90 days, replaces the three current calculation methodologies with a single standardized model, adhering to the Basel III rules, to "increase the robustness and risk sensitivity of the capital requirement for operational risk," said the central bank. EU could fall foul of global banking rules, regulators warn

FRANKFURT, Nov 4 (Reuters) - The European Union could fall foul of global banking rules designed to stem a repeat of the global financial crisis if proposed changes that would make them looser are passed, the EU's top banking regulators. In their starkest warning to date, the European Central Bank and the European Banking Authority argued against deviating from Basel III, emphasising those standards were designed to make the system safer. "At stake here are the reputation, the competitiveness and, ultimately, the funding costs of the EU banking sector," the ECB and EBA said in a joint blog post. "If all deviations under discussion make it into the final legislative package, we cannot rule out the Basel Committee labelling the EU to 'non-compliant'." Inflation has edged down over the last three months to 6.9% in September from 8.1% in June. The fiscal update showed "significantly weaker growth" next year that previous forecast, but the baseline numbers did not foresee a recession. It also cut its deficit forecast for this fiscal year by almost a third to C$36.4 billion from the C$52.8 billion deficit forecast in April. The update also included a tax on corporate stock buybacks similar to a measure introduced by United States. The fiscal update document forecast Canada's debt-to-GDP ratio would be 42.3% in 2022/23, versus 45.1% forecast in April, falling to 37.3% in 2027/28.
My financial planning clients always want to now: How much do I really need to save every year? If you're saving 15 to 20% of your income: Saving at this level is likely where you start to see a little bit of flexibility in your future. If you're saving 20 to 25% of your income: You're on pace with the baseline my company recommends for our own financial planning clients.
Nuclear power has long been shunned by policymakers due to disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima. Rising energy costs caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine have sparked a nuclear resurgence. For most, nuclear energy sparks memories of the large-scale disasters at Fukushima and Chernobyl. To generate energy via nuclear fusion, two atoms have to be combined – the same process that fuels the sun. Both are needed to fight climate change, according to Aneeqa Khan, a nuclear fusion research fellow at the Dalton Nuclear Institute.

CNN —Elon Musk on Sunday gave credence to a fringe conspiracy theory about the violent attack on Paul Pelosi. The new Twitter owner tweeted a link to an article full of baseless claims about Pelosi. Musk, who has 112 million followers on the platform he now owns, posted the baseless story about Pelosi in response to a tweet from Hilary Clinton at 8:15 am ET. He later deleted the tweet around 2 pm, but not before racking up more than 28,000 retweets and 100,000 likes. The surge in restrictive housing — informally known as solitary confinement — has perplexed BOP Director Colette Peters, who told NBC News that she "asked the same question when we saw the numbers come forward, so I'm curious as well." Colette Peters, director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, testifies during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Sept. 29. The federal government houses more than 142,000 inmates in its custody across the United States. It really is limiting the use of restrictive housing when absolutely necessary," Peters said. "We know so much more now from research around what solitary confinement can do to the hearts and minds of those there, and so this is something we need to take very seriously."
The fight against inflation has led to a surge in mortgage rates. An increase in interest rates led to a run up in mortgage rates, which has slowed home sales and therefore price growth. It all comes down to the fact that the higher mortgage rates rise, the less affordable homeownership is for borrowers. Indeed, homebuying activity is slowing the higher that mortgage rates rise. According to the organization's researchers, if a recession were to materialize "mortgage rates would fall around 30 basis points from the baseline forecast level of 5.2%."

Ark Invest's Cathie Wood believes innovators in DNA development are the most undervalued corner of the market. "I believe that today the genomic revolution is most misunderstood and underappreciated," Wood said at Morgan Stanley's AlphaCurrents Conference last week, according to a transcript provided by the bank. "The stocks in the last year, this growth stock bear market, has ravaged the genomic space. Ark Invest has a specific exchange-traded fund dedicated to this space: ARK Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) . However, the fund has wiped out half of its value this year as rising rates hit growth stocks particularly hard.
Social media users are sharing a 45-second clip from a British news channel’s report which juxtaposes European COVID-19 vaccination rates and a single month of mortality rates to imply that countries with higher COVID-19 vaccination will have greater “excess mortality”. However, no “study” has reached the conclusion that European national vaccination rates correlate with mortality, as suggested in some social media posts. The map depicts so-called excess mortality rates across Europe in June 2022, which is the excess of deaths that month as compared to the average rate in the same month during the baseline period 2016-2019. “You really can’t draw valid conclusions on a single factor, like vaccination rates from country-level aggregated data, since countries differ in many ways other than vaccination. The clip selectively compares unrelated European datasets to suggest that high national rates of COVID-19 vaccination led to high excess mortality.
CNN —Covid-19 vaccinations could save thousands of lives and billions of dollars this winter. A new analysis suggests that if more people in the United States get their booster by the end of the year, about 90,000 Covid-19 deaths could be prevented this fall and winter. But if booster vaccinations continue at their current pace, the nation could see a peak of more than 1,000 Covid-19 deaths per day this winter, according to the study, published Wednesday by The Commonwealth Fund. There are now more than 400 daily Covid-19 deaths, on average, in the United States. Federal health officials have said that Americans may need to get a single updated Covid-19 vaccination every year.

Inflation and interest rate hikes have made it even more expensive to buy a home. In addition, a slowing economy overall could bring 30-year mortgage rates back down. As economic volatility further seeps into the US real estate market, housing activity is fading fast. That's because inflation and interest rate hikes have dampened affordability for many would-be shoppers, leading to a steady decline in buyer demand. This combination of cooling prices and declining mortgage rates could indicate the typically busy real estate seasons of spring and summer could ring in a more affordable housing market in 2023.
