Other opportunities for investors to participate in spinoffs will be coming soon. If a company spins off a company in a different sector, the new stock tends to outperform because it's likely undervalued. Winners and upcoming beneficiaries Roth MKM also recently highlighted spinoff stocks' outperformance over the past year. GE Vernova is one of its current favorite spinoff stocks — which the company said to "buy buy buy." Industrial company Esab , a Swedish-American company that makes welding and cutting equipment, is another spinoff beneficiary, according to Roth MKM.

TikTok is suing the US government over its new law that forces a sale or ban of the app. AdvertisementTikTok promised to fight its ban in the US — and now the social-media giant has made it official. TikTok has denied both of these claims, and the US government has yet to present evidence that either action has occurred. Legal scholars told Business Insider that well-articulated First Amendment arguments tend to prevail in court, but Congress' national-security concerns could ultimately win out. Hans, an associate clinical professor of law at Cornell Law School and associate director of its First-Amendment clinic, told BI.

He learned late Tuesday afternoon that Judge Aileen Cannon, whom he appointed, indefinitely postponed a trial in his classified documents case in Florida. She told the jury Tuesday about a $130,000 hush money payment she received from Cohen before the 2016 election. But prosecutors allege Trump falsified business records to hide it and to mislead voters in an early bout of election interference. The judge complained that the ex-president was “cursing audibly” during Daniels’ testimony and was shaking his head. “Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” Necheles asked.

In April 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson was photographed lifting one of his beagles (he had two, named Him and Her) by the ears. Johnson won the 1964 presidential election in a landslide. Kristi Noem is no L.B.J. Appearing on “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Noem was unapologetic. She insisted that Cricket, whom she described in her book as an “untrainable” chicken-killer, got what was coming.

The last six weeks have seen the long-simmering feud between the Compton, Calif.,-born rapper Kendrick Lamar and the Canadian rapper Drake turn into a full-fledged beef, with confrontations delivered in the form of diss tracks. But the squabble didn’t boil over until April 30, when Mr. Lamar released “Euphoria,” a six-and-a-half minute dressing down of the “Nice for What” rapper. On Friday, Drake replied to “Euphoria” and another track, “6:16 in L.A.,” with “Family Matters,” which has more than 15 million views on YouTube. Caught in the middle of this culture-consuming rivalry is New Ho King, an unassuming restaurant in Toronto’s Chinatown. The mention from Mr. Lamar, a Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper, led to a flood of five-star reviews on Yelp and Google for New Ho King, many of them written by people who had never set foot in the restaurant.

“I think we also saw this different sensibility about how to clear protests,” Straub said of the police response to campus demonstrations. In some cases, officers couldn’t distinguish lawful protesters from those who were being disruptive or causing violence, he added. The agreement mandated the NYPD to “change how it deploys officers to public demonstrations,” to better allow the public to exercise their First Amendment rights. I found out we were having another girl early on in the pregnancy, and my husband and I started tossing around monikers. In school, she started requesting to go by her nicknameElla settled into our family perfectly, but her name occasionally nagged at me. I couldn't blame her — what preschooler would want to spell out Elizabeth when Ella would cut it? In trying to explain a nickname to Ella, I've realized just how complicated the concept is. I have yet to find a good way to explain it, though I point out other loved ones with formal names, like my dad William, who exclusively goes by Bill.

CNN —Britain’s governing Conservative Party suffered heavy losses in local elections, a sign that they could be in real trouble when the country holds a general election at some point later this year. It also means that if a general election were held tomorrow, the opposition Labour Party would almost certainly win power. What these results don’t tell us is when the general election will take place. Conservatives are divided on when they think Sunak should bite the ballot bullet. Others think Sunak should look toward the end of the year, as it allows the most time for things to improve.

It's a chance to be creative and turn something you do at work into something silly and social. The rise of the PowerPoint party also speaks to the workification of our day-to-day lives. Perhaps it's no surprise that young adults who had their childhood activities scheduled down to the minute are embracing the PowerPoint party. Black royals have existed around the world for millennia. Mainstream TV shows and movies that depict the true history of Black royal families are few and far between. And while movies about fictional Black royals exist — "The Princess and The Frog" (2009), "Black Panther" (2018), and the latest "The Little Mermaid" (2023) — Hollywood still isn't doing enough to educate viewers that Black royals exist in the real world, according to Nigeria's Princess Keisha Omilana. - Prince Asfa-Wossen AsserateMeanwhile, Asfa-Wossen said educators are too often preoccupied with using slave narratives to recount Black history. But in order to portray Black royals as equal to their white counterparts, there must be a shift in perspective, he said.

The Venice Biennale and the Art of Turning Backward
  + stars: | 2024-04-24 | by ( Jason Farago | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There is a sour tendency in cultural politics today — a growing gap between speaking about the world and acting in it. In the domain of rhetoric, everyone has grown gifted at pulling back the curtain. We are losing faith with so many institutions of culture and society — the museum, the market, and, especially this week, the university — but cannot imagine an exit from them. I’ve just spent a week tramping across Venice, a city of more than 250 churches, and where did I encounter the most doctrinaire catechism? It was in the galleries of the 2024 Venice Biennale, still the world’s principal appointment to discover new art, whose current edition is at best a missed opportunity, and at worst something like a tragedy.
