Bank transfer or payment fraud losses spiked by nearly 150% over that span to $1.9 billion. The big banks that run Zelle in particular “rarely” reimburse customers duped by scammers, according to a recent Senate investigation. So Democrats in Congress are introducing new legislation that would seek to crack down on payment scams by closing loopholes in existing law. For instance, Zelle says that while customers hurt by unauthorized activity are “typically” able to get their money back, victims of scams may not. Under pressure from lawmakers, last year banks on Zelle began refunding some victims of imposter scams.

The Senate rejected a bill on Thursday that would have restored lapsed tax breaks for businesses and expanded the child tax credit, as many Republicans in the chamber lined up against the bipartisan deal in hopes of gaining an advantage in bigger tax legislation expected next year. A sumptuous lobster dinner held to welcome Britain’s King Charles III to Paris last September cost the French president’s office nearly €475,000 ($515,000), according to accounts published on Monday by France’s public auditor. The state dinner included outlays of more than €166,000 ($180,000) for catering and €42,000 ($46,000) for drinks, on top of other costs including furniture, flowers and table decorations. King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, attended the banquet as part of a three-day state visit to France, which had been postponed from earlier in 2023 because of widespread protests over Macron’s pension reforms. Families for some of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday a U.S. judge should reject the planemaker's proposed plea deal with the Justice Department and the government should seek a much higher fine. The DOJ told Boeing earlier this month it could accept a settlement that branded the planemaker a felon or fight the charge in court. Meta has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit by the state of Texas over the Facebook owner's unauthorized use of biometric data by users, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Tuesday. The suit, filed by Paxton in February 2022, accused Meta of capturing and using the biometric data of millions of Texas residents — which was contained in uploaded photos and videos on Facebook — without legally required permissions. Meta will pay out the $1.4 billion to Texas over five years, the office said. "Any abuse of Texans' sensitive data will be met with the full force of the law," Paxton said.
