CNN —Huge protests across Bangladesh escalated into deadly violence this week with clashes between students, pro-government supporters and armed police fueling widespread anger over civil service job quotas opponents say are discriminatory. Many Bangladeshi students are demanding an end to the government’s quota system, which reserves more than half of civil service posts for certain groups. In 2018, the quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal was unconstitutional. Critics and protesters say the quota system creates a two-tier Bangladesh where a politically connected elite benefit by their birth. “This is not just about quota protests anymore, this is much bigger than that, in simple quota protests the government wouldn’t go around hurting and shooting students.

For Europe, the prime concern is tariffs," wrote Goldman analysts. "If the entire impact came in 2025 this would be enough to eliminate any growth that year (our current top-down forecast is 4%)," Goldman wrote. Within sectors, beneficiaries of rising trade risks tend to be defensive stocks such as utilities, health care as well as Europe's GRANOLAS stocks, according to the bank. But he says a "meaningful selloff" in mega tech will see other names "pushed down as collateral damage." And if the AI narrative plays out as expected, a material sell-off in Mega Tech will present a buying opportunity in those names as well," he wrote.

For decades, the National Guard has had some level of presence on the southwest border. The border mission is mostly static security and surveillance, but troops typically are not allowed to interact directly with migrants or suspected smugglers. It also has been contributing to retention issues that have plagued the Army National Guard. The move sparked numerous questions on the ethics and legality of privately funding National Guard operations — and came as Noem was boosting her national profile. The National Guard has frequently been caught in the middle between state politicians and federal officials.

How the world’s tech crashed all at once

CNN —When computers and tech systems around the world went down Friday, snarling airports, closing Social Security offices and limiting jail operations, many people had one question: How on Earth could this happen in 2024? CrowdStrike is everywhereNumerous Fortune 500 companies use CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity software to detect and block hacking threats. Computers running Microsoft Windows — one of the most popular software programs in the world — crashed because of the faulty way a code update issued by CrowdStrike is interacting with Windows. Anne Neuberger, a senior White House tech and cybersecurity official, spoke of the “risks of consolidation” in the tech supply chain when asked about the IT outage on Friday. The infamous hack of the US government using SolarWinds software in 2020, which US officials blamed on Russia, came through a tampered software update.

Unity, after all, has been a key message espoused by President Joe Biden. In 2022, when Beerkus and Nikolau made their plans, the “supertall” skyscraper had topped out but was still under construction. "We cannot let the challenges of the recent past define our relationships of the future," Starmer said in a Wednesday statement from Downing Street. It comes as the specter of a second presidency from Republican candidate Donald Trump looms heavy over Europe after an assassination attempt over the weekend buoyed support for the former president. Both Trump and his newly announced running mate JD Vance have indicated that continued support for Europe — and in particular Ukraine — are not guaranteed under a second Trump administration. The Republican presidential nominee has repeatedly lambasted the continent's lack of defense spending, and has threatened to pull out of NATO, while Vance has shown ambivalence over U.S. intervention in foreign affairs. In anticipation, European NATO members have been upping their defense spending, including a new commitment from Starmer to spend 2.5% of U.K. gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.

"We're confronted by a deadly quartet of nations increasingly working together," he said, in comments reported by Sky News. The coalition described Moscow as having "shattered" peace and stability in the West and having "gravely undermined global security." Russia and North Korea deny arms transfers have taken place. Ian Bremmer, founder and president of Eurasia Group, said the latest NATO summit showed that the West and its opponents appeared to be positioning themselves in a "new Cold War posture." Russia, North Korea and Iran are already under substantial international sanctions, and those restrictions on trade and key sectors have arguably pushed them closer together.

Vance, the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, has embraced a vision to lift the American working class with policies that would break radically with Republican economic orthodoxy, and at times with former President Donald J. Trump’s own plans. Now he faces questions from left-leaning and right-leaning economists on whether it would actually work. The broad vision, laid out in the Ohio senator’s acceptance speech on Wednesday night and through interviews and detailed somewhat in the truncated Republican platform, seeks to raise wages and restore American manufacturing in two basic ways: impose across-the-board tariffs on all imports to favor American-made products, and reduce downward pressure on wages by deporting millions of undocumented immigrants and narrowing the path into the country for legal immigrants. Meantime, the Republican platform, adopted just ahead of the convention, pledges to end inflation, increase energy production, stop sending manufacturing jobs overseas, cut taxes for workers and corporations, keep the dollar the world’s reserve currency and protect the largest domestic programs, Social Security and Medicare, from any cuts.

Can Boeing get back to its glory days?

Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.

Vance’s Republican National Convention speech capped a night Republicans spent prosecuting what they see as President Joe Biden’s biggest foreign policy failures and their consequences. Republicans used Wednesday night to introduce Vance and his life story to the nation. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn shouted at Cheatle, who continued to walk with her head down and ignore the senators’ criticism. Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. When Trump finally did call Burgum, the former president told Burgum he would not be his running mate.

Skills are "far more important" than having a college degree for many jobs, he added. Dimon said JP Morgan Chase has eliminated degree requirements for most jobs at the bank and pivoted toward more skills-based hiring. About 80% of JP Morgan Chase's current roles for "experienced hires," or candidates with full-time work experience, don't require a college degree, a company spokesperson confirmed to Fortune. For context, 62% of Americans don't have a college degree, according to the latest Census data. That means degree requirements can lock out millions of job seekers with alternative qualifications from high-paying opportunities.

CNN —The final night of the Republican National Convention has kicked off in Milwaukee. Pompeo’s claim about the southern border under TrumpFormer Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed at the Republican National Convention Thursday that the US-Mexico border was “closed” during Donald Trump’s presidency. Facts First: This characterization of Trump’s tariffs is misleading. It’s true that Trump’s tariffs on China raised billions of dollars for the US government, but the duties were paid by US companies – not China. For example, Trump’s tariffs were imposed, in part, to boost the US manufacturing sector – but that industry lost jobs.
