Hong Kong CNN —Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ running mate has a decades-long connection with China. “I remember waking up and seeing the news on June 4 that the unthinkable had happened,” Walz told Voice of America in an interview in 2014. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon taking students on two-week tours in China for sightseeing and classes on culture, education and history. In Chinese nationalist circles, which have an outsized voice on policy debates in China, there are no rosy illusions about Walz. The hashtag “Harris’ VP pick once taught in China” racked up 15 million views on microblogging site Weibo.

I have six children between the ages of 5 and 11, and I've told them I won't pay for college except in very limited circumstances. I'm actively encouraging my kids to consider other options and how much ROI they'll get from college. One of the most interesting responses I've gotten from my kids is asking how they can make money now. Not paying for college might force them to be more financially responsible, but only if they choose — or try — to pay for college themselves. I want them to learn to be financially responsible and viable by earning money, with or without college.

The federal minimum wage, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour for 15 years. Given the situation, here's an idea: Why not raise the federal minimum wage right now? Getting anything done legislatively is always a challenge, especially in an election year, but polls indicate a higher minimum wage is broadly popular. AdvertisementOnce the minimum wage gets so high that it starts to cause a bunch of job loss, that's a problem. If a higher minimum wage lifts millions of people out of poverty, that's incredible.

New York CNN —OpenAI is worried that people might start to rely on ChatGPT too much for companionship, potentially leading to “dependence,” because of its new human-sounding voice mode. ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. Now, OpenAI is apparently concerned that fictional story is a little too close to becoming reality, after it says it observed users talking to ChatGPT’s voice mode in language “expressing shared bonds” with the tool. Some people are already forming what they describe as romantic relationships with AI chatbots, prompting concern from relationship experts. For now, OpenAI says it’s committed to building AI “safely,” and plans to continue studying the potential for “emotional reliance” by users on its tools.

However, when we relocated to the UK, as an educator myself, I knew that I wanted an International Baccalaureate (IB) education for all of my children moving forward. Our twins, both now 18, have just completed their final year of the IB program and will attend university. In those middle years at school, children are supposed to be focussing on learning and developing key skills. The IB has prepared my children better for universityWhile my older twins have found the IB challenging, the program has also nurtured their passion for learning, encouraging their intellectual curiosity. This is because an IB school gets students involved in group projects, independent research, and advanced writing assignments throughout their education.

15 November 2023, Bavaria, Munich: Flags with the word "Siemens" in front of the company's headquarters. Comparable orders meanwhile declined 15% from the same quarter a year ago, hitting 19.8 billion, Siemens said. Siemens CEO Roland Busch told CNBC on Thursday that the company's performance during the quarter was "very, very strong." The company attributed its growth in the third quarter to strong demand in its electrification and industrial software businesses, but noted the automation business remained "challenging." There was an "exceptionally high order growth in the software business driven by a number of large contract wins for licensed software," the company said, with profitability growth more than offsetting a profit decline in automation.

The new CEO said in a memo to staff Thursday that he decided to work 2,300 miles from the company’s current corporate offices in Arlington, Virginia, to help restore trust in the company’s commercial aircraft business. A Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is shown on the assembly line at the Boeing facility in Renton, Washington. The company said it had no comment whether it is considering moving its entire headquarters back to Seattle along with Ortberg. Shares of Disney fell Wednesday as concerns about attendance at its theme parks overshadowed streaming profits and better-than-expected headline results. The combined streaming business — encompassing Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — turned in its first-ever quarterly profit slightly ahead of schedule. Then, about two weeks ago, CNBC parent Comcast issued weak April-to-June results for its Universal theme parks business, which weighed on Disney's stock in that session . And, at this point, getting to profitability in the combined streaming business, which adds ESPN+ into the mix, was the biggest focus. "So, I do believe the parks business is in fundamentally good shape.

The door plug was removed at the Boeing factory in Renton, Washington, last September so that problems with some rivets could be repaired. But the necessary paperwork for that temporary door plug removal was apparently never created. But under questioning from the NTSB Lund admitted that it’s not clear who and when that door plug was put in place. “Are you 100% sure there will never be an unauthorized removal (of a door plug)?” Homendy asked. While Eli Lilly's stock remains up about 32% year to date, concerns about increasing competition in the category have resulted in a nearly 16% decline for Lilly shares over the past month. Eli Lilly is making similar attempts with Zepbound, but its launch is at an earlier stage than Wegovy. Second-quarter sales of Ozempic, Novo's diabetes treatment, rose 4% from the first quarter, while Wegovy revenue grew 24% quarter over quarter. New York CNN —Disney Parks are the latest business to face slowing consumer demand in the face of higher prices. Disney’s parks business underperformed expectations and profit fell somewhat last quarter. It’s not just Disney that’s seeing a pullback — Bank of America Institute reported credit card transactions on travel ticked down in June. Disney’s domestic parks and international parks and cruises, though, are seeing different results: Disney’s international parks had increases in attendance and more rooms booked. The company noted that attendance at the parks was comparable to this time last year and spending per guest was up.

New York CNN —Elon Musk’s X has accused a group of major advertisers of antitrust violations in a new lawsuit claiming the group conspired to “boycott” advertising on the platform. The lawsuit claims an influential ad industry group organized “to collectively withhold billions of dollars in advertising from Twitter” because the group was concerned that the platform had deviated from brand safety standards after Musk’s acquisition in late 2022. The lawsuit is the latest effort by X to revive its core ad business, which has tanked since Musk’s takeover. It’s not the first time X has filed a lawsuit related to its declining ad business. The suit accuses Media Matters of distorting how likely it is for ads to appear beside extremist content on X.

Wijeyakumar said Rahab's Daughters had distributed pamphlets ahead of the Paris Olympics at a local refugee camp. Rahab's Daughters has identified labor and sex trafficking occurring mainly within the manufacturing, construction, retail, and hospitality industries in Paris. The US National Human Trafficking Hotline explains on its website, however, that human trafficking is "notoriously underreported." These figures are based on interviews with survivors, reports Rahab's Daughters has received, and data it has collected from online ads.

"That could be like paper towels, it could be toilet paper, it could be things that you know that you're going to need long term." It's smart to adopt a similar mindset when the stock market pulls back as it did Monday, said Sun, who is also a member of the CNBC Financial Advisor Council. Officials are relying on multiple streams of intelligence, and there are divisions among national security officials on how and when Iran’s response might unfold. The relative uncertainty has left the Biden administration in a defensive crouch as it tries to rally allies and pressure Iran not to escalate tensions. The extent of the United States’ further involvement in the war largely depends on how exactly Iran responds to Haniyeh’s death. US destroyers helped shoot down ballistic missiles and drones launched by Iran at Israel in April.
