Beyond fear of pain and temporary disfigurement from missing teeth, I had another major concern: I was addicted to heroin in my 20s. As an expert on addiction, I knew that a return to compulsive drug use wasn’t inevitable with medical opioid exposure. As a result, some languish in extreme pain because they believe that drug exposure will cause them to lose control and immediately return to active addiction. There is much misinformation about how opioid pain treatment affects people in recovery and those at high risk of addiction. Understanding how psychoactive drugs and addictions really work is crucial for better managing medical opioid use — and ending policies that interfere with both prevention and recovery.

Washington CNN —Social media companies should be treated as utilities such as telephone or telegraph companies, a group of states led by Republican attorneys general told the US Supreme Court on Monday. Contested state laws forcing social media companies to carry all online speech are constitutional because tech platforms enjoy “hyperconcentration” of economic power, the group argued. The high-stakes case could determine the future of social media moderation and online political speech and is expected to go to oral argument next month. The case could have implications on the posts that people and institutions make on social media during this presidential election cycle. In their brief, the states noted “striking similarities between social media companies and telegraph and telephones,” and that those similarities justify tough new rules barring discrimination on the basis of political viewpoint.

The case, which revisits a judicial doctrine known as the “Chevron deference,” has been widely described as a conservative effort to limit government. Impeachment gives Congress the power to fire not only the president but also any member of the Supreme Court. Even if the president takes the exceptional step of vetoing a bill it has passed, Congress has the power to override that veto. And the Constitution gives Congress immense power over the federal judiciary. Congress defines the number of judges and justices, sets their compensation and defines the full extent of their jurisdiction.

Both states stripped him from the Republican primary ballot, though those decisions were paused on appeal. Some begin in the state courts, while others are first handled by state election officials, like a secretary of state. CNN is tracking the major decisions on Trump’s eligibility. Most of the major challenges were initiated by well-funded advocacy groups with the backing of seasoned constitutional scholars. Here’s where the major anti-Trump ballot challenges stand across the United States.

Downey said that Nolan's ultra-efficient approach to film sets applies to bathroom breaks, for him as well as the actors. "He doesn't even really like it when you go to the bathroom, but he understands you have to," Downey told Vanity Fair. "I know, but it's not a diuretic tea," Downey replied, adding that Nolan is committed to the process. CNN —Former President Donald Trump is urging the US Supreme Court to reverse the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling that removed him from that state’s ballot. “The Court should reverse the Colorado decision because President Trump is not even subject to section 3, as the President is not an ‘officer of the United States’ under the Constitution. And even if President Trump were subject to section 3 he did not ‘engage in’ anything that qualifies as ‘insurrection,’” Trump’s attorneys argued. The US Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to hear the case, accepting an appeal brought by Trump. The Oregon Supreme Court dismissed a similar case last week, telling the anti-Trump challengers that they might be able to refile it later, based on what the US Supreme Court does in the Colorado case.

These presidents would presumably argue that in their capacities as president, they must expect some legal immunity to pursue policy and lead the country. EVEN EVENTS THAT ‘CROSS THE LINE’ MUST FALL UNDER TOTAL IMMUNITY, OR IT WILL BE YEARS OF TRAUMA TRYING TO DETERMINE GOOD FROM BAD. In arguing for total immunity, his lawyer said a president could only be prosecuted if he or she was convicted by the Senate in an impeachment trial. ALL PRESIDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETE & TOTAL PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY, OR THE AUTHORITY & DECISIVENESS OF A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL BE STRIPPED & GONE FOREVER. Trump has also baselessly questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris, whose parents are immigrants, was eligible. Sen. Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who Trump also bested in that 2016 primary with taunts of “Little Marco,” also again endorsed Trump this week. It is actually Trump who faces more legitimate questions about his eligibility under the 14th Amendment. It is not true, as he alleges, that Democrats can take part in the GOP primary. “You have a group of people coming in that are not Republicans, and it’s artificially boosting her numbers here,” Trump said.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Two Republican legislators filed a resolution Wednesday aimed at initiating impeachment proceedings against Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham over her emergency public health orders suspending the right to carry firearms in some public places in greater Albuquerque, such as parks and playgrounds. In the federal court system, a judge has allowed enforcement of the gun provision to continue while legal challenges run their course. Supreme Court Police officers stand on the plaza outside of the Supreme Court of the United States after the nation's high court stuck down President Biden's student debt relief program on Friday, June 30, 2023 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON — A 40-year-old Supreme Court precedent that over the years has become a bugbear on the right because it is viewed as bolstering the power of federal agencies could be on the chopping block as the current justices on Wednesday consider whether to overturn it. Justice Gorsuch has been an outspoken critic of the Chevron ruling. Jonathan Adler, a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, said there were always disagreements among lawyers and academics over how courts should apply the Chevron ruling. The fisheries dispute is one of several in the current court term in which the justices are considering attacks on federal agency power led by business interests and the conservative legal establishment.

Known for his hard-line stances against abortion and LGBTQ+ priorities, DeSantis could get a boost from an Iowa Republican electorate that is unusually socially conservative. But even those plum endorsements aren't moving Iowa Republicans from the Trump camp. "Donald Trump is a lap ahead of the field," says former Iowa Republican Party co-chairman David Oman, a former chief of staff to two GOP Iowa governors and a prominent Haley supporter. The morning after an anticipated Trump win in the Iowa caucuses, a trial starts in New York to determine a second set of damages in a defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. And while the GOP winner is all but assured in Iowa, the state has still played a key role in the primary process.
