Israel has expanded ground operations in Gaza as it seeks to punish Hamas for a deadly gun rampage three weeks ago that Israeli authorities say killed over 1,400 people. Witnesses said Israeli forces targeted Gaza's main north-south road on Monday and attacked Gaza City from two directions. Gaza health authorities say that 8,306 people - including 3,457 minors - have been killed in Israeli air and ground attacks. Military specialists said Israeli forces are moving slowly in their ground offensive in Gaza in part to keep open the possibility that Hamas militants will negotiate the release of the hostages. Netanyahu condemned the video as "cruel psychological propaganda" and said Israel's ground campaign created possibilities for rescuing the hostages.

Israel has said Gaza's militant Hamas rulers have a command post under the hospital, without providing much evidence. The Israeli military had no immediate comment when asked about reports of strikes near Shifa. Casualties on both sides are expected to rise sharply as Israeli forces and Palestinian militants battle in dense residential areas. Despite the Israeli offensive, Palestinian militants have continued firing rockets into Israel, with the constant sirens in southern Israel a reminder of the threat. Israel says its strikes target Hamas fighters and infrastructure and that the militants operate among civilians, putting them in danger.

Israeli forces mounted a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in the early morning hours of October 28. AdvertisementAdvertisementAn advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of the ground invasion, telling MSNBC's Katy Tur on Friday that "tonight we are starting payback." Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel expects a long and difficult ground offensive into Gaza. Israel has said it aims to crush Hamas' rule in Gaza and its ability to threaten Israel. Though 120 countries, an overwhelming majority of the United Nations, voted Friday for a resolution to call for a "sustained humanitarian truce" in Gaza, Israel has so far refused international calls for a cease-fire.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops and tanks briefly raided northern Gaza overnight, the military said Thursday, engaging with Hamas fighters and targeting anti-tank weapons in order to “prepare the battlefield” before an expected ground invasion. Israel has imposed a suffocating siege on Gaza since Hamas’ bloody rampage and hostage-taking across southern Israel ignited the war. The Israeli military says it only strikes militant targets and accuses Hamas of operating among civilians in an attempt to protect its fighters. That is more than three times the number of Palestinians killed in the six-week-long Gaza war in 2014.
