CNN —At least 25 people were injured in an explosion at an industrial plant northeast of Moscow, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported Wednesday. The blast took place in the area of the boiler room at Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant, in the town of Sergiev Posad, state news agency TASS reported. The plant is a developer and manufacturer for optical and optoelectronic devices for the Russian military, law enforcement agencies, industry and healthcare. The source of the detonation was a pyrotechnics warehouse rented by a third company on the site of the plant, RIA Novosti said, citing local authorities. Two of the people injured were hospitalized, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said, reported RIA Novosti.

Aug 8 (Reuters) - Switzerland successfully defended their team time trial mixed relay crown at the world championships on Tuesday despite a crash for Marlen Reusser. Stefan Bissegger, Stefan Kung and Mauro Schmid had a good start before they handed it over to the women's team consisting of Reusser, Elise Chabbey and Nicole Koller, when Reusser lost valuable time after a crash. Reusser is one of the favourites for the individual time trial but she did manage to quickly get back on her bike to continue. The crash did little to hurt their chances as Switzerland eventually finished with a time of 54 minutes and 16.20 seconds, a full seven seconds ahead of France while Germany were third. Britain were fourth, more than a minute behind, while Italy were fifth after Silvia Persico lost time due to a mechanical.

The DOJ announced Thursday that 2 US Navy sailors were arrested this week. The DOJ accused Navy service member Wenhen Zhao, 26, of giving military info to China for $14,866. The two sailors were charged with similar crimes, but they were charged in separate cases, and it wasn't clear Thursday if the two were connected or if they were courted or paid by the same Chinese intelligence officer. The Justice Department charged Wei under a rarely used Espionage Act statute that makes it a crime to gather or deliver information to aid a foreign government. Zhao, the second officer charged, is accused of sharing information, including operational plans for a U.S. military exercise in the Indo-Pacific Region.

CNN —Two US Navy sailors have been indicted and arrested for allegedly sending sensitive US military information to Chinese intelligence officers. The other sailor who has been arrested, Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, worked at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme in California. In return, Wei allegedly received thousands of dollars. The indictment indicates that Wei received US citizenship during this period, with the Chinese intelligence officer allegedly congratulating Wei on receiving citizenship on May 18, 2022. Much of the information Wei allegedly sent to the Chinese officer was stored on restricted-access Navy computer systems that Wei was able to access because he had a security clearance.

In the United States, party hats — those ubiquitous, cone-shaped signifiers of children’s birthdays and summer picnics — have their roots in a less celebratory phenomenon: the pointed dunce caps used as disciplinary tools in schools throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. A major physics journal is retracting a two-year-old scientific paper that described the transformations of a chemical compound as it was squeezed between two pieces of diamond. Such an esoteric finding — and retraction — would not typically garner much attention. But one of the leaders of this research is Ranga P. Dias, a professor in the physics and mechanical engineering departments at the University of Rochester in New York who made a much bigger scientific splash earlier this year, touting the discovery of a room-temperature superconductor. At the same time, accusations of research misconduct have swirled around Dr. Dias, and his superconductor findings remain largely unconfirmed. The retracted paper does not involve superconductivity but rather describes how a relatively mundane material, manganese sulfide, shifts its behavior from an insulator to a metal and then back to an insulator under increasing pressure.
