The lion was being transported by its owner when it escaped on the main road of the bustling port city during peak traffic hours, the police statement said. The escaped lion had made its way into the basement of a nearby building after roaming on the road for some time. In 2017, police in Pakistan arrested a man who took his pet lion for a night-time drive through the streets of Karachi.

More than 80% of Walt Disney Picture’s 18 in-house VFX crewmembers signed their authorization cards, IATSE said in a release. While the Marvel Studios VFX unionization effort is set to count votes on September 12, workers at Puerto Rico-based Gladius Studios also voted unanimously to unionize earlier this month. The unionizing VFX workers are behind some of Walt Disney Pictures’ biggest hits, IATSE said, including the live-action adaptations of “Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”If the elections turns out in favor of unionizing, IATSE said the studio is obligated to hold good-faith negotiations. CNN has reached out to the Walt Disney Company for comment. VFX jobs have historically not been represented by unions, even though a wide range of positions from production design to lighting and props have fallen under IATSE.

New York CNN —A brand of frozen mixed vegetables and sweet corn sold at Kroger and Food Lion is being recalled because of potential bacterial contamination. The Food and Drug Administration announced this week that Twin City Foods, which packages the affected food, is “voluntarily recalling a limited quantity” of the frozen vegetables because there’s a “potential for these products to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.”Affected food includes various sizes of Kroger and Food Lion branded super sweet corn, Kroger and Food Lion branded mixed vegetables carrots, super sweet corn, green beans and green peas. Listeria is a hardy germ that can continue to grow while refrigerated and can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections” in the elderly, young people and those with weakened immune systems. However, the FDA said that “there have been no actual consumer reports of human illness or other complaints associated with this product.” A customer’s third-party lab results from the sweet cut corn sparked the recall. People that have bought an affected frozen vegetables product are being told not to eat it and to “immediately return the product to the store where they purchased it for a full refund.”

T-Mobile US to cut 5,000 jobs as cheaper plans weigh on costs
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
T-Mobile US said on Thursday it would reduce its workforce by about 7% by cutting 5,000 jobs in the United States as the wireless carrier grapples with rising costs related to adding more subscribers in a competitive market. The carrier has been taking the lion's share of subscribers looking for cheaper plans in the last three quarters through discounted bundles, but that has taken a toll on T-Mobile. The jobs cuts over the next five weeks will target corporate and back-office roles, and some technology jobs, Sievert said, adding that retail and consumer care divisions will not be impacted. The carrier expects to incur a pretax charge of about $450 million in the third quarter. T-Mobile had said in July that it expects wireless subscriber net additions between 5.6 million and 5.9 million.

The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee opened an investigation into the work of the Atlanta prosecutor who has criminally charged Donald Trump and others with interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump is due to surrender at an Atlanta jail on Thursday evening to be booked in the case. Eighteen other people, including lawyers who promoted false claims about the 2020 election, also were indicted in the case. Traditionally, the committee's jurisdiction is limited to oversight of federal courts and federal officials. The House Judiciary Committee earlier this year demanded similar information from the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr., who is prosecuting Trump in another criminal case.

After 122 Years, a Lost Edith Wharton Play Gets Its Debut

Edith Wharton’s 1934 autobiography, “A Backward Glance,” glances a bit more carefully at some things than others. She gives her close friend and fellow literary lion Henry James a chapter, but names her husband of 28 years exactly once. “The Shadow of a Doubt,” a full-length 1901 play that got close to a Broadway opening before foundering under murky circumstances. It was all but forgotten — which is perhaps what Wharton had intended — until two scholars unearthed a script in 2016. “Their work is so spread out that there’s a lot we still don’t know about.”

Its cautious view also weighed on the retail sector shares, including Kohl's (KSS.N) and Nordstrom (JWN.N). In a clear sign that higher borrowing costs were straining customers, Macy's credit card revenue, which accounted for about 2% of the total revenue in the quarter, slumped 41%. Throughout the quarter, Macy's cleared excess stock after a move to convert its merchandise for the spring and summer hurt demand, leading to a slip in gross margin. Macy's reaffirmed its expectations for 2023 sales of $22.8 billion to $23.2 billion and adjusted full-year profit per share between $2.70 and $3.20. At $12.8, Macy's shares were set for their worst session since March last year.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump has attracted a lot of attention for his lead in the polls and the money race, but he’s also already ahead in an essential area that’s gotten less notice: the delegate process. Republicans often point to Jeff Roe, who is leading the pro-DeSantis super PAC, as an expert on the delegate process. The delegate process rivalry between DeSantis and Trump speaks to the overall strategy of many of these campaigns. Trump’s state party advantageIn 2016, the idea that Donald Trump would eventually have deep roots with state Republican party officials seemed outlandish. The Trump campaign denies the former president ever made such a comment.

For example, one person made a viral spreadsheet of more than 1,000 verified Lahaina residents that included their stories, what they needed, and how to pay them directly. Many Lahaina residents in the spreadsheet detailed their needs for food, clothes, and shelter after losing everything in the fire. Kohli is the solution to India's No 4 concerns, says Shastri
  + stars: | 2023-08-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW DELHI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Fielding Virat Kohli at number four could address India's long-standing concerns about a settled batter at that crucial position, former coach Ravi Shastri has said. Kohli has amassed the lion's share of his 12,898 runs, which include 39 hundreds, batting at number three in 212 of his 275 innings. In his 42 appearances at number four, Kohli averaged 55.21, slightly below his overall 57.32, and has scored seven hundreds. Shastri, who was coach of the India team when Kohli was captain, and lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, said those were impressive numbers for a number four batter. Shastri said during the 2019 World Cup, he considered changing Kohli's place "just to break that top heavy line-up".

Seoul, South Korea CNN —An endangered lioness was shot dead in South Korea on Monday, an hour after escaping a private farm, according to local officials. The lioness escaped its cage Monday morning in Goryeong county, in North Gyeongsang Province, about 300 kilometers (about 186 miles) south of the capital Seoul, according to a county official. Photos released by the fire service show the lioness before she was killed, peering out from a tangle of bushes and leaves. The private farm also owns cows, but has no other lion or lionesses, said the county official. The lioness had been registered with the Daegu Regional Environmental Office as an international endangered species, an official from the agency confirmed to CNN.

Turkmenistan rebukes Russia over 'gas union' comments

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/File PhotoASHGABAT, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Turkmenistan warned Russia on Saturday against trying to extend its influence over the Central Asia-China natural gas supply chain after Moscow said more countries could join its "gas union" with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan all pump gas to China via a pipeline crossing the three countries; the lion's share of gas comes from Turkmenistan as the two other countries have faced strong growth in domestic gas demand. Russia, trying to open up new Asian markets for its gas after Western sanctions, said last year it was forging a gas union with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan that would streamline shipping and exporting gas to them and to third parties. Russia's foreign ministry said this week the gas union could be expanded as other countries were interested in joining it; it did not name any.

It is here that Ugandan running is now thriving, though the region’s talent took time to develop. While Kenya enjoyed relative stability in the decades after it gained independence in 1963, Uganda was at war for much of the 1970s and 1980s. Lawlessness pervaded the Mount Elgon region until the turn of the century: Bandits from neighboring tribes would sweep in at night and conduct raids on cattle, often killing locals in the process. The resettlement process, Kiptala said, was traumatic, but it also helped unlock running talent. Through school, children could access competitions, and by the early 2000s, athletes from the Elgon region were beginning to appear in World Championship and Olympic finals.

The head was found in 1999, and for years, archaeologists believed it to be a horse. Now they're debating what animal is meant to be represented by the ancient carving, according to a press release from the University of Tübingen. In the press release, Nicholas Conard, a professor at the University, said there are two main theories: a cave lion or a cave bear. Conard himself believes that it's a cave bear — a prehistoric bear species that inhabited Europe — because the figurine's "pronounced bear hump" matches the height of its shoulders and appears to imitate a bear's gait. "It therefore makes sense to look extra carefully for the missing parts of this animal in the years to come."
